In love with Ludman?! / MY FAMILY IS ERIC!

I tried calling Chinese Eric at 9:45 while reading old emails, but his mom said he was sleeping since he was tired from working. Not a problem! Then half an hour later, he got on MSN to say that he wanted to write me to say that he was busy tomorrow because stuff came up.... NO FAT DRAGON FOR YOU! At least I appreciate that! He wanted to know how long Nate's stay was; I had heard until the 9th. When I said I probably wanted Grandma at the birthday celebration this year, he figured that it would be a close family thing. Yes, but I had to tell him that HE was PART of MY FAMILY! (reaction: "cool cool - THANKS! *thumbs up* ") Updated him on Grandma, too. He hopes the weather will cool down when the kids are back in school, and I had to tell him that I was thinking about that the other night for him! "The nights will be cooler again, just for Chinese Eric!" Hahaha! He asked about the dog, too. It was a nice chat, for sure! I know he was kind of tired, so I didn't mind if he needed sleep at midnight!

Jon emailed us to say that FAT DRAGON is probably flexible; I looked the directions up on Translink, and it involves Waterfront Station and then four possible buses to Powell Street - CONFUSION! Then he sent another one to say that we could shelve it for a later date where more people could make it, even if Nate's leaving soon. Should be good times, then!

The Hero has to choose between Flora or Bianca, but says he can marry Flora's father (Master Ludman) instead! "So what you're saying is that you're in love with me?! Er, I'm flattered, but really, you best think that over."

"Congratulations, Lord Simon... you're to be a father very soon!" YES? NO? HAHAHA! [this was taken from the hilarious LP thread... I'm not playing the game again just to get to this point once more!]

This guy Pusan was going around on a mine cart in Torokko...

Macarons not being macaroons, aspirin, headaches, #9, and Auntie Evie

Jon figured that the parents' flight was delayed or cancelled, but got Steph to agree to driving me home whenever it DID get in. End result: I said I'd stay overnight so Grandma wouldn't freak out. Harmony called with an offer to go with her, Steph, and Lisa for macarons; I said I'd see. I *do* need alone time at MY PLACE for sure, and if I don't get it, I'll be cranky! Good thing I packed aspirin gelcaps, as I developed a headache just before midnight, which meant bedtime!

Imagine my surprise when my sister woke me up out of sleep at 1:20 AM, saying that she could drive me home. I said that I had to get dressed first, but that would be a good idea! I swear, I was barely coherent! Managed to dodge a hug from my mom, haha. Talked to Steph on the way home about Grandma's confusion and her broken portable radio; I said I'd see about lunch today. Got home twenty minutes later, checked my mail (nothing too important), and unpacked before sleeping at 2 AM. Woke up at around noon, and called my sister who was five minutes away: sure, I was actually up for lunch with the lards at #9 with Flora as our waitress! (and Uncle Percy / Auntie Eva / Auntie Evie) Talked about my sister's and my understanding of Cantonese, my parents' trip, Auntie Evie's son Jason (he'll be here in June) and the Edmonton Chinese service, rides to Dawn and Eni's wedding on Saturday, Bryant / his mom Auntie Helen / Shirley / his past girlfriends, noodles, congee, grocery shopping, and more.

After that, my family went to Langley Farm Market. Discussed the weird TV shows I'd been watching (I "forced" Big G to watch INTERVENTION last night), Grandma's paranoia with the house key that Valerie left for me, bananas, onions, buying a LOT of ginger, that post-birth vinegar and egg concoction on the birth of grandchildren, Jon needing to cut down on alcohol consumption (a pint and a half of beer may have done me in yesterday), my being a really sound sleeper (sister had to SHAKE me awake), my knowing how to moderate my own beer consumption, Mexican tequila, and more. Then we went to Yaohan after a coffee stop at McDonalds: my sister and I saw pig snouts, entire pig ears, and entire PIG HEADS for sale at the supermarket! We also bumped into Pastor Edward! Mom bought $100 worth of stuff like noodles, Chinese buns, vinegar, on-sale seafood mixes (she said it was fine that I ate it - my sister liked the protein I got), oranges, crab, and more. At least she thanked me for doing stuff like watering the plants and taking the recycling / garbage out! Steph said I did a good job of looking after Grandma - hey, I'm not going to leave her alone to freak out!

I changed my mind about going to Macaron Day once Steph said they had coconut in them; I remember that from when Harmony made them. Turns out we were both confusing those with macaroons! When I got home, I was afraid that catching up would take forever, but it didn't take a zillion hours. (my strategy of not being on Trillian mostly worked; DARN MY FAST FRIENDS!) The transit directions to Thierry don't seem TOO bad, as long as I can figure out how to get there from Vancouver City Centre! (Harmony said it was just across the street) I have to get some cash out anyway, but I'll shower and such first. Also, I need to finish my library books and return them within a week. That should totally be doable!

Waterbridge, Russell Stover, Ganong, Botticelli, and more

After a nap, I still had tons of time before the hockey game to go to London Drugs. I got a bunch of on-sale stuff: Waterbridge letter C for Chrystal, a Russell Stover heart with milk chocolates, a bag of Russell Stover assorted chocolates, some Russell Stover truffles, candy conversation hearts (or "sweet notes") for Steph and Lisa, a Botticelli heart, a Lindor heart, and a bag of Ganong marshmallow hearts. Due to money given me this week from Mom / Alan / Polly, I only had to pay five cents of my pre-existing cash for it! (yay for a free $35!) I also interacted with a six-month-old baby boy, who held my finger while in his sister's arms.

I'd have given some chocolate hearts to Eric yesterday, but I can just imagine what his mom would think if she saw those! She already had a weird reaction to his giving me this laptop, hahaha. Got home and stashed everything in the fridge, then ate the chocolate that Flora gave me yesterday at #9 since I'd forgotten about it... things melt in here quickly for some reason!

#9 with Rita and the parents

When Mom called at 12:15, I told her that I couldn't go to the passport office because Phil hasn't given me his information yet. She still invited me to lunch with Dad and Rita, so I went with them to #9. We talked about travel, England, the Pantry, Jon / Harmony / Steph, Rita's turntable from London Drugs, Chinese food, Flora the waitress, the thrift shop, Germany, rent for a huge place, the lease, money, and the Russia cruise in July. Also talked about Rita's nephews living in Powell River, Italy, rock sugar, South America's heat, wonton soup, various noodles, Grandma, how Rita doesn't like garlic, chicken chow mein, Skype and technology, Danny's Wonton House, Ironwood, Lansdowne's past as a race track, and the numerous changes in Richmond in the past 40 years. When I got home with some leftovers, I had a surprise YM message from the usual suspect wishing me a happy Valentine's Day - maybe things will be okay after all. Thank goodness he wasn't online, though; it was great so I could leave apologies for my behavior last night, and I need a nap!

Happy Date for dinner, bus impatience, Google results as a restaurant, and brain mush

Mom and Dad dropped me and Grandma off at Happy Date Bakery and Restaurant after they gave me $20 and Cracker Jacks, but Mom had to make sure Flora from #9 was working. She wasn't, but that was apparently fine. I saw an Asian couple changing their baby's diaper on a chair inside Happy Date restaurant. Yes, Chinese restaurant washrooms are REALLY dirty, but there are some things that you just DON'T DO! For dinner, we both had Horlicks and soup to drink (plus toast with butter), but I had Minute Steak with spaghetti and eggs while she had baked seafood with rice. Afterwards, she bought a mini-pack of walnut pastry for herself, and a mini-pack of butterfly pastry for me. She got really impatient on the bus once we were the only two people left on it with a good number of stops to go. Luckily, I didn't have to restrain her from using the bell pull! It's also a good thing I didn't have to prevent her from taking the 410 instead, as I kept her bus ticket till the 407 showed up!

Grandma, once I made her look at the Google Image Search results for spaghetti: "Aiya! What restaurant makes THAT much noodles?! You shouldn't have those for dinner anyway, but instead for lunch! Only RICE for dinner!" Guess it really isn't "whatever I haven't had in a while" as dinner for ME...

Mom: "Here, read this! You might suffer from mom-nesia!" *reads the newspaper headline* "... waking up too often to CARE FOR BABIES may turn brains to mush!" Does that describe my life?! I DON'T THINK SO!

Dad: "When does Teunis leave? Oh, he left yesterday... no wonder you're depressed!" .... o_O WTF. *cue both parents saying stuff about how he should save money since his job isn't guaranteed, and he isn't even past the probation period* Um, yeah...

Mom, asking for my opinion on her banquet dress: "How do you like my outfit? Is it tight enough for you?" .... er, help?

Grandma, on the weather: "It's good that it isn't snowing!" Me: "It's JULY, almost AUGUST! Of course it's not snowing!" Grandma: "I just meant that it's good there's no snow! In January or February, it snows." Um, okay?

Earth Day irony / MORE geek gamer talk?! / Names will not put you in danger!

Eric picked me up at his advertised time, and we were off - talked about Sunday, how almost everyone should be blessed by my presence, Thai food with quinoa (which I always mispronounce due to its spelling), sushi, "election dinner," Randal actually replying to my email (the surprise!), and more. When we got to church, I ordered the AWESOME roll and some noodles from SushiHolic before going back to the fellowship hall. Greeted Vania and Quan before figuring out that Christon was sitting in the seat I wanted to be in. Sighing, I went to the back of the hall to eat and read there instead. Harmony was right - the AWESOME roll is pretty good! Said hi to Pastor Tom, and Stanley said that he'd had yogurt and Mountain Dew for breakfast and lunch - interesting! The Good Friday service was okay - involved pieces of paper this year, but I also noticed Mr. Creep - NO! "Nice bit of Earth Day irony," I thought about the papers! Eric wasn't ready to leave when I was, unfortunately - talked to Cindy about teaching (I saw Flora's pictures on Facebook!), to Deb / Wesley / Nathan / Harmony about the hockey games (OH NO!), to the different woman Teresa about her mom supposedly being in the hospital (she won't tell us her mom's name because she doesn't want to put her in danger - OKAY THEN! *backs away from crazy person*), and to Jeff / Anita / Allison / Joanna.

Jeff asked about Steph, Allison cried when Anita briefly left to do something, and baby Joanna waved at me - so cute! (she also pointed at people) Emily says Sam is coming back tomorrow, and talked about the hockey game / Joey too. When Eric was FINALLY ready to leave, I talked to him about my supposed self-deprecating "creative listening" / Mr. Creep / ruination / Darth Maul / Darth Vader / the Lich King / WARCRAFT / complaining about geek gamer talk (which I had to hear MORE of when I got home!) / Jordan / hand sanitizer / EARLY Sunday morning. When I got home, I heard Teunis talking to Jordan about game issues and necromancers, AGAIN. Later, he said he was meeting up with Jordan and Kaili tomorrow for a "summer" thing, and tried educating me about pagan stuff, but didn't really explain it well. Discussed milk, sports commentary, noodles, no gaming because of Easter weekend, hockey as war, soldiers, Odin, Thor, making money from an online game, and more.

Canucks devouring Blackhawks, Dutch greetings, cooking wine, and compressed air

Teunis and I went out to Save-On (discussed perfume while getting juice / bottled water / unbleached flour / eggs), City Fresh Market (fish balls / cooking wine / sausage / dumplings), and Staples (hard drive / two cans of compressed air / printer paper) - got home and discovered that he should have bought some milk, too! Good thing I did some shopping yesterday since it was PACKED! Discussed pretty vases, environmental impact, animals such as reindeer / elk / moose / foxes / cats / sizes up north / deer / wolves as a garden predator (I believe it from what Flora has to say!) / grizzly) bears, BUFFY VS. TWILIGHT, Communism and his family, healthy snacks, Maxine and a baby girl, fresh air, posting Facebook notes, anarchists, Spain, politics, fresh air, and evil mommy business cards.

Also talked about vanilla ice cream containing beaver anal gland, Dr. Pepper containing antifreeze, peanut butter containing flies, his stepdad being okay out of surgery, and Kaili / her friend Gwen / Jordan / Cat. Conversed about chopsticks / emperors, boiling / frying dumplings with Chinese sausage, his needing to leave at 9:30 tomorrow, copying Linux files to the new hard drive (which looked like the MATRIX), advance happy birthday wishes, and all the Dutch versions of HAPPY BIRTHDAY that I found on Planet Pals. (says that his mom might get a kick out of it)

Dream about high-maintenance strangers falling into a hole / COOKIES!

I had a weird dream which at first involved my working at a telephone company, making a bunch of calls. When we got our checks, I had $59,015 on a yellow cheque while Tim (lackofendorphin) had $150,023 on a really red and green cheque! When my mom saw these, she immediately compared the amount; she scolded me for not working as hard, even though Tim and I both told her that we DID work the same hours and such! I was off to join white Eric and some others for a sunny day in the park after I picked up some blue-and-white stamps, anyhow! He picked me up, and warned me that we'd have to pick a stranger up as well - I was okay with that since he'd said something about it. When we did pick this person up, she said that she liked wearing white to accentuate her blonde hair - we could tell from her outfit! After a while, this person also proved to be high-maintenance, wanting Eric to turn down the heat in the car when there was this wonderful invention called THE WINDOW which she could adjust to suit her needs!

Ignoring her since it was also rather sunny outside, I asked Eric how he happened to have the car, knowing that his dad also wanted it. He said that Ron had picked the car up to run errands, then driven it back to where it was originally! We couldn't really ignore our passenger anymore when she made her way to the front seat - we warned her that she'd cause an accident, but she wanted us to KNOW she wouldn't be frozen out of any conversation! Eventually, we stopped at a traffic light; she threw a royal fit, telling us that she wouldn't be in the car any longer. True to her word, she opened her door and left - after some shocked moments, Eric also left the car to see where she went!

I was worried since the light WOULD change at some point; just when I was about to yell out the window for him to come back (I didn't care about HER), he came back... just in time to avoid a lecture from Citrus on duty! We noticed a huge hole in the road up ahead; Randal and others were busy trying to erect barriers around it so people wouldn't fall in. Apparently, it was too late - our erstwhile passenger, David Wong, James and Sanne's kids Jenna and Saskia, Fidela, and others had already fallen in. I was most concerned about the kids and Fidela, but they seemed to be okay once we'd rescued them! David Wong said that he was a liar and didn't deserve any stamps I gave him! No idea why I had that dream... CRAZY STUFF! When I got up, I discovered that New Jersey / North Dakota / Sports Chek had all tried to call me... THIS IS WHY I TURN MY PHONE OFF! Flora L. also added me to Facebook, finally - YES! Hahahaha! She apparently shares my sister and Natalie's birthday - NICE! *thumbs up*

Flora assails a shaved, frothing Jacinta with titles! / VBS rides / Sublimation

High-scoring words of the night:

SHAVED (120 points) - against Alice P. [4W used twice, hook off JOULE for a plural]
ASSAILER (136 points) - against Cindy D. [3W, 4W]
FLORAS (160 points; two 4W), SHAVING (320 points; 4W, 5W) - against Erica C.
FROTHING (425 points) - against Kathleen M. [two 5W]
TITLES (160 points; 3W, 5W, hook off BOW for a plural), SPINET (194 points; 5W, 3W, hook off ZEE for a plural) - against Caryn S.
DATIVE (100 points) - against Cindy B. [5W, 2W]
JACINTHE (102 points) - against David W. [3W, 2L on J]

Tried calling Chris Lam to say I didn't have a ride this week to VBS, but his mom Auntie Fonda said he wasn't home - I recognized her voice, and asked her how she was doing. She misinterpreted that as "where are you going now?" and told me that she and her husband Kevin went to another church now. I think I figured that out some time ago, but thanks for the info and Chris' cell number (which she had to write down to make sure she had the correct one) anyway!

After about 20 minutes of stalling, I did call Chris on his cell - I don't know why I felt the need to ask if he were going to VBS when I knew very well that the answer was yes! However, I did say that I didn't have a ride this week, so would probably only be able to go when Henry went. He said that it was fine, and thanked me for letting him know, at least! I had told him back in April that my only issue with helping out was the ride thing, after all.

Japanese baseball players, Bathroom Readers about Canada and craziness, slang

Relevant Taiwan conversation:

[21:43:27] Corey: HOMO?
[21:43:32] Flami: NO!
[21:43:43] Corey: NOMO
[21:47:12] Flami: sorry, I'm not a Japanese baseball player :P try again
[21:50:21] Corey: I don't know nothin about no Japanese baseball players
[21:50:33] Corey: apparently, there are a couple from Taiwan in the MLB
[21:51:10] Corey: they're surprised when I don't know about that
[21:51:58] Flami: I stopped paying attention to that a while ago
[21:52:50] Corey: I never knew I was supposed to pay attention to it because I didn't even know it existed. now that I do, I'll continue to pay the same amount of attention, I think
[22:00:33] Flami: haha, nice
[22:07:24] Corey: I guess it would help if I knew what the names were, so I could at least act like I know what they're talking about
[22:12:15] Flami: probably
[22:30:18] Flami: hey, did you ever decide what to do with that package?
[22:32:01] Corey: I don't know... will you get it if I send it again? :P I have to spend another $5-6 to send it again
[22:33:22] Flami: you know what... this has happened to me before when someone sent me a package - I did NOT get a notification from the post office about the "unclaimed package" (I didn't have time to tell you that on Sunday)
[22:48:10] Corey: why would the post office have it in the first place? they don't leave it at your building? plus, it took two damn months
[22:49:31] Flami: if mail such as this is undeliverable for whatever reason, I usually get a notice stating such
[23:06:30] Flami: and no, they didn't leave it here..
[23:08:43] Corey: do they usually?
[23:11:00] Flami: not if I have to sign for it or whatever
[23:15:13] Corey: you can't just authorize the building to sign for it or something and keep it in the office? I'm pretty sure you didn't have to sign for it anyway though, I just used regular USPS

Had a random conversation with some guy (screen name of "istayhighx420") who says he saw my screen name while Googling the fishbots - it was okay up until he figured I typed too slowly, and implied that I wasn't fun - BLOCKED! I decided to get Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Plunges Into Canada, Eh (BTMS-Portable Press / Consigned), Uncle John's Bathroom Reader: The World's Gone Crazy (BTMS-Portable Press / Consigned), and two Happy Bunny bookmarks at the bookstore tonight. Also wanted a pair of Jessica panties at Sears to replace an old pair. Thanks to the bus being late, I had less than fifteen minutes in which to do so. I could have left earlier or waited till later, but I wanted a reward for surviving certain things. Luckily, I knew exactly what I wanted, and added a renewed Chapters membership to my purchases since I might as well buy it before the HST kicks in.

By the time I wanted to get out of the mall, the doors were locked! Double luck kicked in, as I saw someone open a door - I held it for two other people who were in the same predicament I was. Then I went to London Drugs to get the Snap Pea Crisps which I'd seen yesterday (Grandma refused to get those because they were peas and not chips), and four eFrutti candy packs which were on special. I can definitely afford four for $6... those are earmarked for Bible Study sharing purposes, so we'll see how long that lasts! On the way home, I smelled pot - got home and talked to Billie and Corey.

New Record: Five forced wins in the past 24 hours, against Flora G. / Shelley R.-B. / Brooke W. / Marshalle D. / Emma Grace F.

Canada beats Norway 8-0! / Drink name / Lent

Did some editing while watching the Canada-Norway hockey game (8-0 with a Jarome Iginla hat trick, and good Roberto Luongo goaltending!), and eating ketchup chips. Also watched the Russia-Latvia hockey game, heh. Took a Facebook quiz from Darren that said my born job was to be a music teacher or musician - I don't know about that, but it sounds cool! Became a fan of about 50 things on Facebook - sushi, Olympics, sleeping, staying up late, bubble wrap, bubble tea, laughing, etc. Oh my! I got support from Flora G., Vanessa H., Julie S. (julie709), David S. (omni_sinrilus), Teunis, Krista (geek_dragon), and Ellen. Definitely love my good friends - they're wonderful!

Leslie just got their Alternative Little Miss Name. Their Alternative Little Miss Name is Little Miss Diva.

Three birthdays coming up next week in toddler Sunday School, oh my!

Gave Grandma a Chinese New Year card - she wondered who had written in English. Your grandchildren and granddaughter-in-law, who else?! I guess she was okay with it, haha. Got into church, and saw Flora's kids Eunice and Isaac in their brand-new clothes for Chinese New Year - they looked cute! Isaac said hi as he got a cute red envelope with a Mickey Mouse design, and Eunice wished me a Happy New Year. Of course, I greeted her back with "Happy Chinese New Year," haha. I was going to sit in my usual seat (near Eric / Jeremy / Cindy / Melia / Christon - Joe and Jeannie's wedding invitations are NOT the 2009 tax receipts!), but saw Dave all the way across the room.

On the pretext of talking to Karmie and Noah about the O Zone, I decided to see if it was indeed he - it was, so after talking about the outdoor ice rink / free concerts / other stuff, I moved myself over there instead. I'm sure Jeremy and Christon might have wondered what was up, but I'm equally certain this will lead to teasing on Eric's part later this week if he saw where I was going! OH NO, haha. Then Dad wanted me to give tax receipts to Calla and Lesley, so I told Noah that my dad asks me to do things for him too - accomplished during "handshaking time," thank you very much! Dave commented that he had cold hands (from cycling over), but that was perfectly understandable! Noticed that Dave seemed to breathe and sigh a lot - maybe it's just him, but it was still cool even if he did call me an instigator of some sort. (thought he'd be wearing his tiger shirt since the year of the Metal Tiger starts today, but I guess not - too cold still!) I just had to be careful not to look to the back of the room because Mr. Creep was in the very back row. (Uncle Peter and Chrystal don't know what they're dealing with, since they talked to him for a bit!)

Turned out that it was a good thing I moved, since Dave had to go back home afterwards - no lunch this week, but it's hardly surprising with Chinese New Year and all. Saw Karen and Lincoln, so wished Lincoln a happy birthday - he was impressed, haha. Talked to Chrystal, William (the Olympics), Joey (as a volunteer, he was backstage at the opening ceremonies), Sarah (Joey had found her eventually), Emily Lam (Jordan had made a card for Alan... hahaha), Jeremy (coffee and work!), Hien (the whole BS drama with Kenny - I have no reason NOT to believe him!), Cordia (mouse costumes!), Quan (downtown on the Olympics and Wayne Gretzky), and more people. Was surprised to see Steph (she was between shifts), but she invited me to a get-together on Saturday - should be good times, and Melia could give me a ride too. I'll give her the birthday gift tomorrow and Chantal's thing on Saturday or something - at least, not in front of the parents, haha.

Jon and Harmony had seen the Wilco show last night, so we compared notes on that and the Bedouin Soundclash show. They'd gone to Steamworks afterwards for a drink, and it had been PACKED! Steph was shocked when she heard that their bill had an automatic 18% gratuity - YIKES! Saw Auntie Catherine and her grandson Mattias, so said hi to them. I definitely didn't want any pre-moistened Cheerios, man! Auntie Catherine asked me whether the top fit me; awkward moment averted, as I told her that she'd given me a fringed scarf instead of a short-sleeved sweater! I'll just give it back to her next week, and find another bag for Conor's birthday gift! Saw Sam, who apparently was trying to make it look like he had accidentally stuck a drumstick up his nose, hahaha.

I saw little Allison later, and she gave me a high-five after letting me look at her cookies. After talking to Deb about the violent Olympic protesters yesterday (we'd both be behind peaceful protesters, or will enjoy what we can now the event is here), I went upstairs to toddler Sunday School. I was happy to see the twins and Amanda there, as it meant that I could offload four Ziploc bags of Valentine's Day candy! (one was for Amanda's older sister Hannah) Auntie Bessy was there too, which is fine - I wasn't TOO nervous when telling the kids a Bible story, haha. Harrison asked why my yellow hat had buttons on it, and seemed to be of the opinion that only shirts had buttons - no, kid, they make pants / hats / other things with buttons too!

Conor told me that a pink felt was running out of ink - it'll do that if you use it to color in a rather large heart on a drawing for your mom about how much you love her, yes! I asked Linda when the twins' birthday was, as I thought it was coming up - she FINALLY seemed to understand me after a few months, and said that it was actually next Monday - the day after Harrison's! Guess that means I could be buying planes / Transformers (one for Amos too) / DORA books this week! Auntie Ying forgot about paying me back for the Valentine's Day stuff, but I'll remind her on Thursday maybe... or even tomorrow since it's her day off. Or maybe she didn't want to do that in front of Auntie Bessy, who hugged me and thanked me for teaching the kids - she did give me some feedback like continuing the story instead of giving into the rowdy interruptions. I'll keep that in mind, haha.

Went downstairs to interact with baby Mattias some more - he's so cute, and seemed to be having fun with a shiny pink scrunched-up candy wrapper! I guess it's like a really tiny ball to him, heh. After a bit of that, Dad said we were going to the old Green Village with Alan since Polly was at the Mozart GLORIA practice - so after collecting Mom, we left. First time ever that we had a table right away after arriving at the restaurant, too! Discussed Jordan, Eric Ma not being impressed with Awana lantern crafts, the O Zone (which Alan, Polly, and my parents have gone to check out), the busy crowded downtown, and more. Since they're having dinner tonight at Top Gun, I might as well join them since I couldn't make it for dinner tomorrow. It appears that Mom is fine with my not doing anything for them on the 18th, but I could speak too soon again, so I'll reserve any final declarations on that till later. When I got to the townhouse, the Internet almost gave me a heart attack by not working for a while JUST when I needed to update and get all this stuff out of my head!

Mom, on the Broadway / Commercial Skytrain: "Oh, did I tell you? I had an EPISODE yesterday! I took the wrong Skytrain with your grandma, and went all the way to Burnaby! But it was WORTHWHILE because we were on there for over two hours, and spent only $1.75! They should only have one line there, since it'll be less confusing!" HAHAHAHAHA, so Asian! Steph and I both told her separately that they had signs, too!

Dream of pasta shells exploding in yogurt containers / Amusing OUTLANDER review / Snow Bunny

I dreamed that pasta shells would explode in a strawberry yogurt container (from Alison) if brought near the intense light and green jewels of an altar in a cave. What the heck...

Here's a funny review of OUTLANDER that Flora found:

Allow me to summarize it for you:

Claire: I love my husband! I love sex!
Frank: But it's okay if you have sex with someone else, in certain circumstances.
Standing Stones: SUCK! Ha ha, you're in another time!
The Anti-Frank: Ooooh, I think I will rape you.
Claire: Eeek!
Clansmen: Scots to the rescue! Here, meet Jamie and his manly manhood.
Jamie: Och, aye, I'm a tough laddie. And I'm going to kill the Anti-Frank for beating the shit out of me and raping my sister.
Claire: Ooooh, he's cute. Hey, wasn't I married? *shrug*
Dougal: Ye have to marry the laddie to get away from the Anti-Frank.
Claire: Okay.
Dougal: And ye have to have sex wit' him.
Claire: Mmmmm.... but.... well, okay.
Jamie: I'm a virgin. Oooh, but I love sticking my manhood in ye. It's like a sacrament and all.
Claire: I should get back to Frank, I think I will take this opportunity to run away... I guess... sort of... meh.
The Anti-Frank: Ha ha! Found you. Now to rape you!
Jamie: Och, that's my wee lassie. First I'm going to rescue her, then I'm going to beat her for disobeying me. And then I'm going to tell her about how me Da beat me and how much I liked it.
Jealous wench: The village witch is looking for you.
Claire: Okay!
Villagers: She's a witch! Burn her!
Jamie: Over my dead body!
Claire: Honey, I have something to tell you. I'm not a witch, but...
Jamie: Ye must go back!
Claire: I can't. I long for your manhood too much. It's a manhood like no other.
The Anti-Frank: I too long for your manhood. I think I will bugger you right after I crush your hand with a hammer. But, I love you. You remind me of my dead brother. Here's some grease.
Jamie: Ouch. Oooh, but that feels sort of good. Och, I'm so ashamed.
Claire: We must rescue Jamie! Send in the cows!
Jamie: OCH! Me hand! Just let me die!
Claire: Never! Let's go to France.
Jamie: Och, aye lassie, I feel much better now.
Father Anselm: God says it's okay that you're a bigamist.
Claire: Awesome. Time to use my foreknowledge of past events for good!
Diana Gabaldon: The sequel will be 900 pages.

You Are a Snow Bear

Like a bear, you're not a big fan of snow. If it has to snow, then wake you when it's over!

You think everything about snow stinks - it's cold, it's wet, and it's a total pain.

You'd rather be skiing than swimming. And you even think warm drinks are totally overrated.

You're happiest when you don't even have to think of snow. You were meant to live in the tropics.

I would rather SWIM than ski, thank you very much. :P

Anti-social / Ice cream / K-Mart / Surfaces

Got this new icon from arctic_blossom in ohnotheydidnt:

Got this one from a Google Image Search for "ice cream" - haven't had one of these in so long! Maybe I should go to McDonalds and order one, haha...

I'm used to people smoking cigarettes outside my window. Now, it smells like someone's smoking POT outside the window - yay! :P

I've just heard that ALICE COOPER will be a night DJ for Rock 101 - this is very cool. I remember when they had Dee Dee Snider of Twisted Sister do a show on weekends, and of course they still have Little Steven's Underground Garage, but this certainly rocks! :D

Called Auntie Ying earlier, who still thinks I'm doing a good job with the kids. She says she can learn from my example, and says she'll give me kid-related stuff from Bible Study Fellowship on Sunday. Apparently, she has to talk to Flora about posters and visual aids - and wants us to reverse our teaching mode, so the kids will learn first and have free time to play at the end. Having the kids on the mat instead of at the table works well, too. I know Conor likes me - it's too bad Harrison felt left out last time, heh.

Told her that I got cards and gifts for the kids (didn't want Hannah to feel left out since her birthday is two days before her little sister Amanda!), and that I've known Amanda / Amos since they were babies! I've been doing Toddler Sunday School for about 6.5 years now, so have seen some of the children grow up! (Ian / Sean / John / Luke / Rachel) THE WORD BECAME FLESH is going to be a non-story lesson, and I'm not sure I can do it. We'll see. Auntie Ying says that Chrystal's mom is retiring pretty soon - just what Chrystal needs... MORE time with her mother! :P

She brought up some blood tests / fasting that she and Uncle Peter have to do tomorrow, and I said that I watched JACK BAUER premiere - I know Grace and Phil like it! She's been calling her mom more regularly now - not something I'd personally do, but whatever works. She told me about some good Mexican restaurant near her place... now, THAT is what I've not had in a while! It was a good phone call, and now I'm talking to Corey about Wal-Mart / Target / Zellers / K-Mart (it's a DUMP) / garbage cans. Interesting, as usual!

<[21:27:59] AlenaBrolxFlami: haha, no.... did I tell you that I *finally* got one of those "step-on-me" garbage cans?! [21:28:06] AlenaBrolxFlami: (and I bet they might) [21:28:39] mrptptpt: why do you want to step on your garbage can? [22:00:59] AlenaBrolxFlami: sorry - shower [22:01:20] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, you know... the ones with the little lever thing at the bottom [22:27:08] mrptptpt: mine is just a can. you put stuff in it. no contraptions or mechanisms. seems to work pretty well! [22:27:20] mrptptpt: my sister has one of those things you have to step on, and it's annoying [22:31:20] AlenaBrolxFlami: I thought it would be a good way to hopefully decrease the mice on the counter [22:31:35] AlenaBrolxFlami: how is it annoying? (my sister has one, and I thought it's the coolest thing ever) [22:34:31] mrptptpt: well, that might help keep mice out of the trash [22:35:30] mrptptpt: it's annoying because you have to step on the stupid thing, and then usually the lid hits the wall or something, and those always seem extra narrow, so they fill up quickly... then the lid takes a few seconds to close again [22:35:49] mrptptpt: a much easier way to go is to walk over to the trash can, drop something in, and be done :P [22:37:02] mrptptpt: in our kitchen, we have a trash compactor, which is sort of annoying. it's nice because it's built in under the counter so it doesn't take up any floor space, but you have to open it and close it to use it. also, the compactor part broke years ago, so it's basically a trash can in a drawer :P [22:37:03] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, yeah... true, but I saved $32 on mine [22:37:16] AlenaBrolxFlami: okay, now that does sound annoying [22:37:38] mrptptpt: you didn't save anything, you spent money to get it :P you only saved money if you were already planning on buying that before you saw it go on sale [22:38:47] AlenaBrolxFlami: and I was planning on buying one for a few weeks now [23:10:43] mrptptpt: how much are they that you saved $32? $32 alone sounds like way too much for a trash can... [23:13:22] AlenaBrolxFlami: I saw one at Zellers for $50 [23:17:58] mrptptpt: the name of that place bugs me a lot for some reason. I don't think we have those in the US, so I don't have to hear about it much at least [23:19:25] AlenaBrolxFlami: why does it bug you? [23:20:00] mrptptpt: I don't know :P it doesn't make sense I guess. like "Sellers" spelled wrong or something [23:25:33] AlenaBrolxFlami: well, I heard that Target is really supposed to be French [23:30:31] mrptptpt: Some people jokingly give Target the pseudo-French pronunciation /tɑrˈʒeɪ/ tar-zhay, as though it were an upscale boutique. This trend is incorrectly believed to have been started by Oprah Winfrey, when she used the French pronunciation to refer to the store on her television show; it has actually been traced back to 1962, the year the first Target store opened; this was reinforced by a 1980s television advertisement starring Didi Conn. This pronunciation has also led some people to incorrectly believe that the company is French-owned.[8] [23:31:03] mrptptpt: it's all American [23:32:41] AlenaBrolxFlami: I know it's American [23:33:36] mrptptpt: so it's not French [23:33:49] mrptptpt: French people don't even support freedom fries, so screw them [23:33:54] AlenaBrolxFlami: I thought so [23:34:00] AlenaBrolxFlami: HA [23:34:38] mrptptpt: I never actually saw anyone seriously use that term, or any restaurants :P I'm sure someone did... [23:37:39] mrptptpt: Target also kind of sucks. it earns points for not being Wal-Mart, but they never have anything I need [23:37:55] mrptptpt: even the new massive Super Target [23:41:12] mrptptpt: but everything is better than K-Mart, which seems to only be for Mexican people these days... I don't think they're actually cheaper than Wal-Mart, so I'm not sure why. last time I went there, while looking for Wiis to resell, the lady working there was a total bitch, too. I just asked if they still had any even though I was pretty sure they didn't, and she got all mad and half-yelled a bunch of crap about how I should have been there earlier (I was at another store's opening to get one, and did... I was checking for more :P), and I can't expect them to have everything I want and all this crap [23:41:48] AlenaBrolxFlami: for some reason, I thought Target had a lot of stuff [23:43:33] mrptptpt: now if I said, "hey you ugly whore, give me a fucking Wii right now or I'll kick your children in the teeth!" ... then that might have been an acceptable reply, but what I actually said was something like "hi, I'm looking for a Nintendo Wii, can you please tell me if you still have any?" [23:43:33] mrptptpt: K-Mart is a dump, though, even if they managed to staff it with people that aren't rude idiots [23:44:33] AlenaBrolxFlami: we don't have that here - so why is it a dump? [23:44:41] mrptptpt: and Target DOES have a lot of stuff, but they either don't have what I need or they're out of it just about every time I go there [23:44:52] mrptptpt: Wal-Mart is evil, but they're cheapest and always have what I need [23:45:35] mrptptpt: K-Mart is a shithole, I don't know how they stay in business. they were almost gone not too long ago, but I think Sears bought them out or something [23:46:21] mrptptpt: it's just all old and run down looking.. they have older products... I bought a Sega CD game there, new, for like $5 years and years after they were completely gone from anywhere [23:46:39] mrptptpt: they don't take care of it, it just sucks completely [23:47:13] mrptptpt: they remodeled all of them around 2000-ish, but they already look like hellholes again [23:48:16] mrptptpt: once, I saw a guitar there with a Fender-style body and a Gibson-style neck.... first. that combination is ugly as hell, but second... why and how does that even exist? where the hell did they FIND that? it was probably the worst guitar on earth, and they wanted like $150 for it or something :P [23:49:30] AlenaBrolxFlami: man, that doesn't seem very good... [23:49:53] mrptptpt: they try to be a Target or a Wal-Mart, but it's more like a flea market, which I don't really understand because they have normal products for the most part, but then you go to the electronics section and they have these super out-of-date stereos and stuff... the games and CDs are all old, and totally locked up so you can't even buy them unless the person working electronics (oh, that person doesn't exist) gets them out for you... [23:50:51] mrptptpt: I'm sure you've heard of "blue-light specials" [23:50:55] AlenaBrolxFlami: What the heck?! Even I know that's one WEIRD-ASS guitar! [23:51:00] mrptptpt: K-Mart is where that comes from [23:51:10] AlenaBrolxFlami: I've heard of those, yes... [23:51:14] mrptptpt: they were probably decent at one point [23:54:11] mrptptpt: when I was a kid, they were awesome because they have ICEE machines in the store, so I could usually get one of those out of my mom. now. I'd be afraid to get anything out of a machine there... they probably don't even clean it :P [23:55:28] mrptptpt: there was a big thread on SA a few years ago about some ghetto (like literally in a ghetto area) K-Mart. this guy worked there for a long time, and had all these insane stories about it. apparently, they don't actually have any security.. they have camera domes... but no cameras.... and they're not allowed to, and if they were, are not paid enough to stop people [23:55:43] mrptptpt: so they'd have all these gangsta guys that would just grab anything they wanted and leave [23:56:25] mrptptpt: swearing at the employees and laughing at them on the way out. they could call the cops of course, but they wouldn't show up even remotely close to fast enough to do anything, and they don't even have cameras to see who it was, anyway :P [23:56:34] AlenaBrolxFlami: WHAT THE [23:57:44] mrptptpt: plus at the end of the day, they'd empty all the registers (while the store is open) and take all the cash for the day through the whooole store to a room in the back, and apparently the "customers" figured that out after a while and would just steal the massive load of cash on a regular basis... I wonder if that thread is goldmined... there were a ton of crazy stories [23:58:36] mrptptpt: they're a pretty terrible company [00:10:36] mrptptpt: True Stories of Ghetto K-Mart!
[00:12:06] mrptptpt: it's a BYOB (people acting dumb and not worrying about punctuation or writing properly :P) thread apparently... bear with it, and I think it gets moved to GBS after a while, and there's actual decently-written stories.. watch for the one about the guy that gets mad at the employee because he'll miss "Martin" :P it has a nice feel-good twist at the end. pretty sure that's from this one
[00:17:09] AlenaBrolxFlami: will do
[00:17:46] mrptptpt: "here's something that would happen all the time: people were so bold that they wouldn't even try to shoplift... they would just grab what they want and walk out. invariably, some pasty manager with a tie would accost them as they were going out the front door and be like 'excuse me, sir. excuse me' and then BAM!! the 275 all-muscle-pound thug would just turn around and knock them out with one swing, and calmly resume walking out of the store"
[00:26:01] AlenaBrolxFlami: HAHAHAHA.
[00:26:25] AlenaBrolxFlami: the "gay sex" bathroom stall stuff is great :P
[00:26:29] mrptptpt: pretty much the whole thread is really funny if I remember right
[00:26:36] mrptptpt: yeah you love your gay sex in bathrooms
[00:28:29] AlenaBrolxFlami: WHAT?!
[00:28:41] AlenaBrolxFlami: I'm laughing over the "one-hour photo" one
[00:28:54] AlenaBrolxFlami: "i worked the 1-hour photo for a while, and people's pictures would get messed up a lot because the machine sucked. one day, this really big woman in her 40's dropped off a roll, and she was really nice. the pics started coming out of the machine, and they were all of a barbeque and people smiling and babies and old people UNTIL THE END OF THE ROLL. the end of the roll was like 7 or eight pictures of these two crazy looking thug guys with gold and gangsta poo poo holding TEC-9s and AK-47s and posing menacingly in front of pounds of weed and baggies of crack with clovers on them. while i'm looking at the pics going WTF, the two guys walk up. i didn't say poo poo, and the one guy pulled out a fat knot of cash and paid for the pics.

i'm glad the machine didn't mess up those pics"
[00:36:57] AlenaBrolxFlami: Yay! It smells like someone's smoking pot right outside my window!
[00:37:43] mrptptpt: turn the hose on them
[00:41:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: nah, it's fine
[00:41:46] mrptptpt: or if you really want to be nice, call the cops :P
[00:47:10] AlenaBrolxFlami: hah, I think they've gone now
[00:47:26] AlenaBrolxFlami: (I should have called the cops on my ex and his "friends" in the Chilliwack house)
[00:48:59] mrptptpt: bad idea, you'll go to prison when they say "CHILLIWACK PD! OPEN UP IN THERE!"
[00:49:19] mrptptpt: when you start laughing hysterically because they said "Chilliwack," they'll get mad
[00:50:25] AlenaBrolxFlami: no, I won't laugh
[00:51:00] mrptptpt: but that name is ridiculous
[00:53:45] AlenaBrolxFlami: we're used to it around here
[00:54:09] mrptptpt: you should laugh about it anyway
[01:02:21] AlenaBrolxFlami: why?
[01:05:12] mrptptpt: BECAUSE IT IS A SILLY NAME
[01:09:26] AlenaBrolxFlami: on that Something Awful thread, I note that someone is PERMA-BANNED as opposed to just BANNED... what's the difference?
[01:09:42] mrptptpt: if you're banned, you can just pay again and get a new account
[01:10:28] mrptptpt: perma-banned means you're out forever. a new ip address and fake information would work, but if they find out who you really are, you're outta there
[01:15:45] AlenaBrolxFlami: so what do you have to do to get banned or perma-banned?
[01:16:06] mrptptpt: break the rules, or break them a lot?
[01:18:44] AlenaBrolxFlami: ah. got it.
[01:20:41] AlenaBrolxFlami: awww... that "Martin" story is so touching :D
[01:24:30] mrptptpt: told you so :P
[01:25:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: SURPRISE! YAY!

Trivia fact for Friday, Jan. 22: What is the distinguishing feature of a superoleophobic surface? It's oil-repellent.

Great-Aunt and Grandma returning to Hong Kong... MORE money?!

After waiting for the 407 for what seemed like an eternity (I read about Amanda Zhao's killers finally being arrested!), it FINALLY showed up. Maybe I should have checked the Translink website before leaving, I don't know. Unlike yesterday, I got a prompt response to my ringing of the doorbell. Dad said I should have some macaroni to tide me over till lunch - I wasn't averse to that, haha. Mom got home a bit later (being surprised that I was early *sigh*), and saw Grandma trying to nap on the couch. Turns out she was up at 4 AM since she apparently couldn't remember when the flight was, and thought it was at 8 AM or something. Great-Aunt was pleased that I'd come to see them off... hey, it's what I do! We got to the airport, where Mom was her typical Type A self while checking them in. I found out Great-Aunt's Chinese name: almost the same as my grandma's, only the Chun has been replaced with a Hing. ;)

We went to the food court after checking in their luggage. I saw a little boy playing with his sister on the luggage carts - he bumped her, and she cried. Then he bumped himself too hard, and spilled a Coke. Mom thought the father had spilled it, but I corrected her. I observe some byplays, hahaha. Talked about Hong Kong, the parents' Singapore cruise (J-Mak's parents are on the same ship!), reiterated offers to have Great-Aunt stay later on, tips, people-movers, someone looking after them on Cathay Pacific, generosity, and more. Saw Uncle Andrew and Auntie Ena there - seems they are going to Hong Kong for a family wedding before going to China. (a niece) They're on the same flight as Grandma and Great-Aunt, though separated by about twenty rows or so. Discussed Sean, work, dentist appointments, Uncle Sam, and two full bags of dental care stuff for the people in China.

Then we saw the two old ladies off - yes, I gave Yee Poh a hug, and she kissed me on the neck. She gave me $50 MORE, of which $9 went to pay for parking. (thanks, Mom...) Later, Mom criticized me for not giving Grandma a hug too, but she's not an emotional or affectionate person! I did say bye to her, I guess. (and of course I hate being publicly emotional!) Then Mom told me about Great-Aunt's hard life with a sister-in-law who didn't like her, and a daughter-in-law who might be the same. Of course her kids are very thankful and appreciative, and she can be generous even if she has family with certain problems! No guilt trips, man... although of course I'll write to thank her for her generosity. Maybe Cousin Eric can translate the letter, haha - and no, I'm not taking the Chinese magazines home! (Great-Aunt told me and my sister to hurry up and get boyfriends and get married. Then she can come here again and "drink beer," which is the literal translation of "wedding banquet," hahahaha.)

I can officially say that I've had enough of eating out for now, although now I want Western food! (so I had Greek food - OPA! - at the food court) Too much seafood and stuff, even though it was good - hopefully, Eric and I will do Subway on Friday! I still need to buy grapes and email Kevin about attendance... later, after I vanquish the remnants of this cough with Neo-Citran! Jocelyn added me to Facebook, yay! As far as Mr. Creep goes, Flora's suggested I watch the movie Doubt. I'll look it up on IMDB, for sure!

Mooncake, Mid-Autumn Festival, dinner conflict, and poo phobias

Grandma gave me some mooncake yesterday, so I decided to eat it earlier tonight. At least I won't have to contend with someone saying that it "tastes like ass." Uncultured person! This is the good kind, with eggs! Corey hasn't had it, since he was in Taiwan with Jane during Chinese New Year, not the Mid-Autumn Festival. I remember getting it a lot when I was a kid, mainly from Grandma and Chinese School. Who knows... I might send him some while it's still available (next week?), and get some for myself too.

I also assume Jane (who doesn't like it) knows more about the festival than I do, haha. (just because I eat mooncake doesn't mean I know a lot about the festival!) He finally tried a digestive biscuit after taking them out of the closet where they were stashed to clean up before his sister's wedding. After I yelled at him about expiry dates (and looking stuff up for my own reference), he finally tried one. "I just tried one of the digestive thingies... not bad, but it seems kind of plain, like it would be really good if it had something with it. They'd probably make good Smores."

Great-aunt plans update: They're staying at my parents' house, and lunch / dinner will be next Sunday. I was reminded that I have a Committee meeting on Monday night when I got Steph's email stating that she's off both Sunday and Monday. Mom thinks that since she knows Flora the waitress at #9, we can get a table for lunch easily. We'll see about that! Then dinner could be at either Hon's (although I've heard rumors of it closing?!) or Master Hong's BBQ House. I AM NOT A GRANDMA, STUPID PEOPLE! Karen sent a bunch of us an email about Christon's birthday dinner... unfortunately, it's on the 4th at 6. DARN IT! Knowing Jon, he might still try to make an appearance at both events, so we'll see how that goes!

Poo nugget for Tuesday, September 29: Dr. Stool Says - Rhypophobia - This serious condition (the fear of defecation) is presumed to have a psychological basis in childhood trauma, and can be very difficult to treat. A related pediatric condition called "encopresia," or fecal soiling, occurs in kids who volitionally refuse to use the toilet. Both of these conditions speak to the importance of making poo a fun and stress-free activity during the childhood years.

Being reunited with my debit card / Steel water bottles for $5!

Note to self: Go to American Grille or L.A. Grill (cheaper) for a meal. Thus will I slay the memory dragons which are still there! He said he'd take me to the former for our anniversary, but never did. Actually, I should also go to Richmond Sushi to slay THAT memory dragon as well... I should get people to go there with me, hahaha.

When I was getting ready to go out, it occurred to me that I couldn't find my debit card anywhere. Then I remembered that I hadn't gotten it back from the cashier this afternoon. I stewed for a while before going out to Save-On again, with good reason. Certainly I had reason to believe that I left the card at the store, even if I didn't have a receipt. Thank goodness Customer Service had the card, because then I'd have had to cancel it.

Then I went to London Drugs to find water bottles and mouthwash. I lucked out and bought two of the stainless steel water bottles on sale: original price was $14, but they were $5 each! Got mouthwash, some strawberry-peach / orange-mango Trident Fruit Squeeze gum (on sale for a dollar each), and some on-sale kiwi-passion fruit lip balm (NOT mango!) - should have bought hand sanitizer too, but maybe on Wednesday if I get together with Chrystal. I'll confirm that tomorrow at Awana, of course. Then I went to the intersection - and WAITED A LONG TIME! I figured that Eric wasn't going to show up around 7:30 (yes, I'm slow :P), so went home instead. Ugh!

Leslie's just got their Redneck Dog Name. I just got my Redneck Dog Name. It's Fire.

Leslie just took the "What color nail polish are you?" quiz and the result is Hot Pink. Your color is HOT PINK! You are flirtatious and sexy when no one is looking.

Leslie just took the "What color lipgloss you look best in" quiz and the result is orange and natural. You don't like to be the center of attention. You like to live your life freestyle and simple. You like to show kindness and blend in.

Facebook quizzes taken from Julie S., Ryan M., and Flora:

Leslie took the What Is Your Theme Song? quiz and the result is All You Need Is Love by the Beatles. This song definitely shows that you are a very caring person, and that you will sacrifice a lot to help someone.

Leslie just took the "I.Q. Test" quiz and the result is You are the next Albert Einstein. You are a genius, but you may be a little bit of a know-it-all, so try to just not be an overachiever.

Leslie took the Discovery Awaits! quiz and the result is Peninsula Native. Your people have lived on or been visiting the Peninsula since you had to arrive by boat and train. In fact, you thought this quiz was so easy, it was lame.

Getting pizza delivered is your way of getting even?

I've finished my Visual Bookshelf stuff for now, so that's good. Only took a couple of hours!

These are from my copy of America's Dumbest Dates: Over 500 Tales of Fumbled Flirtations.

Travelin' Music

"Dating is just like shopping for hats. You try on hundreds, but reject most. It takes a while till you find just the right one." - Jenny, age 24.

"She told me she didn't like mustaches. I shaved. She told me she didn't like jewelry. I stopped wearing chains. She told me my hair was too shaggy. I got it cut. She told me I dressed too flashy. I bought new clothes. She told me she didn't like my cat. That was it." - Mel, age 47.

"When I tried to break up with him, Leonard begged me to keep going out with him. "Give it time," he whimpered. "It'll get better." As if our relationship was a virus." - Cindy, age 23.

"I finally told one man, in no uncertain terms, not to call anymore. That night, he came over with a dish of homemade English trifle. He said that I'd told him not to call, but I didn't say not to come over!" - Gena, age 34.

"After I told him I didn't want to see him anymore, he kept leaving messages on my answering machine, pleading with me to call him. Telling me how he felt about me, how I made his life complete, balanced him, how he dreamed about me, wanted to take me here or there, do this or that to my body. He read poetry to my voice mail. Sang love songs. Pleaded, begged, cried. Completely humiliated himself. He kept on that way for two years. Finally, he met somebody else, and now I kind of miss him. I got used to having his messages. I counted on them." - Fran, age 24.

"Peter broke up by innuendo. He was late for dates, called me by the wrong name. Talked about newly released movies he'd seen that I hadn't. I hadn't seen the movies, but I got the picture." - Meg, age 30.

"We were in bed, talking. And the conversation turned controversial. I guess I took the wrong side of the sexual harassment issue, because - before I could say Anita Hill - I was out in the hallway, holding my shoes." - Tim, age 32.

"Carl mentioned that he'd met a girl who looked just like Pamela Anderson. "That's nice," I said. Or something like that. He said no more. I realized that he thought he'd told me something important. Apparently, he thought that meeting someone who looked like Pamela Anderson spoke for itself. What would he want with a regular person anymore?" - Camille, age 23.

"Bottom line, I couldn't get serious about a man with no elastic in his socks." - Lisa, age 36.

"She told me that when she was with me, she was out of control, too attracted. She said it wasn't my fault, but I was bad for her. She couldn't be herself around me, couldn't resist the urge to cling. She said that dating me was like taking a plunge headfirst in a swan dive, knowing there's no water in the pool. Now what am I supposed to think about that?" - Cliff, age 28.

"We had a fight and broke up. He'd left his laundry at my house. The next day, I dumped it on his desk. He called to thank me for doing his wash. Obviously, he didn't care that his underwear had been sitting on his desk for all the world to see. I did get some satisfaction, though, from knowing that he assumed I'd washed it - knowing that, for the next five or six days, he'd be wearing dirty underwear." - Mayebelle, age 33.

"He took me to dinner and asked, by candlelight, if I wanted children. I said, "Yes." He asked me if I wanted to get married. Tears in my eyes, I said, "Yes." He said, "Well, you and I want different things. I don't want to hold you back." I thought he was proposing; he thought he was breaking up with me." - Cathy, age 26.

"At the ballet, Brendan told me that he wanted a ballerina. I wasn't a ballerina. That was pretty much the end of it." - Kimberly, age 22.

"Everett gave a whole speech about how it wasn't me, it was him. I was great. He just wasn't ready to settle down. I was perfect; he was immature. This was our second date. Count 'em: one, two. There was nothing to break up FROM. But apparently, this was his idea of a long-term relationship." - Emma, age 27.

"Gene assured me that I shouldn't worry about him - there was always a fresh supply of younger women, so he'd never run out of partners. But he said he was concerned that I'd have a problem because, as we aged, eligible men would be in shorter and shorter supply. It was his duty, therefore, to give me a chance to catch one before it was too late." - Margaret, age 45.

"Ashleigh listened to Michael Bolton all day, all night. Enough said?" - Wesley, age 29.

"She told me that she was breaking up with me because she thought I was going to break up with her. Basically, she said she was ending it before I did, so I wouldn't. I hadn't thought of ending anything, but she wasn't interested; why would she believe a man who wouldn't even admit he was going to break up with her?" - Bob, age 23.

"Kelly told me she wanted a down-to-earth guy who'd take care of things for her. This image did not suit me. I told her she'd be better off with a contractor." - Gary, age 33.

"I had to dump him before he dumped me. If you see it's going nowhere, it's much better for your head to dump rather than get dumped, assuming you like the guy. And, if you do it right, dumping him might get his attention, turn things around. Of course, if you DON'T like a guy, well, you can afford to let him dump you. You can give him all kinds of trouble and, generously, let him be the one to call it off." - Jade, age 28.

"I put up with the toupee as long as I could. He was always checking mirrors, afraid it would slip, blow, tilt, show. Car windows had to be closed. He wouldn't go near a fan, wouldn't swim, ride in a boat or a convertible, ski, or ride a horse, a carousel, or a Ferris wheel. He wouldn't do anything that might jeopardize his rug. The rug determined his whole life and, eventually, even who he dated. As in: not me." - Gwen, age 47.

"We'd been going out for two years. Gary took me to dinner and told me that he had news: He'd met a great girl. Like, what was I, chopped liver? A few months later, he called from a car phone, asked what was I up to, and said that, well, he had to go, couldn't chat, was in the limo on the way to his wedding. Then, a few days later, he called from his honeymoon. "Char," he said, and he sounded desperate, "I think I've made a terrible mistake." He still calls, asks to see me. I tell him not on a silver platter, that if he comes over, I'll leave. Imagine. He met "a great girl." Indeed." - Charlotte, age 31.

"I'm sixty-seven years old, and George had me sitting by the phone, waiting for it to ring. How undignified. Marriage is one thing; dating's quite another - you have no authority. I had to call it off." - Luella, age 67.

"We'd had an argument at dinner. He told me I was jealous and possessive; I told him he was superficial and immature. Believe me, he couldn't drive fast enough on the way home. The whole way, we didn't say a word. That is, until we hit the deer. The thing shattered the windshield and battered his car before hobbling off into the woods. I told him he was lucky he didn't kill us, and our argument started all over again, even though he had to drive with his head out the window. When we got to my place, I got out as fast as I could. The car was still rolling when I slammed the door." - Sophie, age 30.

"I like to spend time with Bess, but our conversations are often lacking. I have trouble with my hearing, and she has trouble with her memory. So she tells me to remind her of things, but I don't hear what it is I'm supposed to remind her. I ask her to repeat herself, and she can't remember what it was she just said. We get along, though. We have a good time." - Abe, age 85.

"After dating Harry, all I can say is never, and I mean NEVER let anyone take your picture with your clothes off." - Molly, age 26.

"Jeremy is seventy; I'm sixty-six. We're both widowed. We went out and had a spectacular time, but then he didn't call again. I ran into him in the lobby of our building, and he looked exhausted. I was worried about him, and told him so. "Listen," he says, "I got women in the building bringing me food all the time, ringing my bell, asking me to brunch, dinner, lunch, coffee. I use the stairs - I avoid the elevator so I won't bump into them. You're a great lady, but please understand. I don't think I'll be calling you. I don't have the energy." It's a shame what they're putting him through. I feel sorry for him." - Edith, age 66.

"After my husband died, people wanted to fix me up. But I thought, At our age, who's there to go out with - someone who keeps his teeth in a glass? I finally went out with Edwin because I hoped for a nice dinner companion. All evening, he complained about his arthritis, his digestion, his gout. I thought, Who needs another person to take care of? I did all that for my husband, but we had forty years of history. Edwin asked if I'd travel with him. I thought travel would be nice. But do I really want to share a bathroom with this guy? I don't think so; that would give me much more information about him than I'd want." - Ida, age 73.

"Max declared that, if we got married, the percentage of money we each entered with should be our percentage of ownership all the way through. I couldn't see going through life with a calculator in my hands." - Ellie, age 32.

"What I learned from dating Janie is don't - I mean do NOT - get your teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist after you've stopped seeing her." - Jeff, age 34.

"Sue was a blind date. It was a disaster. At the end of the evening, she said, "Look, I don't feel bad that we didn't hit it off. I think it's good to go out with people I don't get along with from time to time. That way, when I'm home alone some Saturday night, I won't feel bad. I'll think, 'At least I'm not out with HIM.'" Truth is, the very next Saturday, I *did* think that. About HER." - Walter, age 33.

"What finally got to me about Norm was bee pollen. He used to carry vitamins with him whenever we went out. He had a ritual of lining up all his bottles and taking his pills, even in restaurants. Even on trips. We went to a country bed-and-breakfast for a weekend, and he forgot his bee pollen. Nothing would do if he couldn't get more, so we spent the whole morning searching for a health-food store that carried it. The nearest was about forty minutes away. By the time he found some and bought it, the day was over, along with the relationship." - Flora, age 44.

"His family wanted us to break up because we have different cultural backgrounds and different religions. They tried to bribe him with a trip to Europe or Hawaii. A new motorcycle. Money. Whatever he wanted. After we finally broke up, I saw him driving a Jag. At least I know what I was worth." - Theresa, age 27.

"Hector thought that somebody had to be the boss, and that the "somebody" had to be him. He forgot that I had veto power." - Lupe, age 25.

"Anytime I opened a kitchen cabinet, Barbara yelled, "What are you taking?!" God help me if I opened the refrigerator. This made me think that maybe she wouldn't be such a great life partner." - Marc, age 31.

"I broke up with Harriet and, suddenly, she's everywhere. The health club, the bar, the deli - every place I hang out. She's invaded my whole life. Taken it over. My friends talk to her, not me." - Moe, age 41.

"He stopped smoking for "us." One night, he lit up and took a big drag on a cigarette. That was his way of telling me it was over." - Amanda, age 26.

"I thought I was nuts about Angela until we got snowed in at her parents' country house for a weekend. We were stranded, in the dark. Sounds romantic. But it's amazing how quickly you can find out how little you have in common with someone. It's amazing how long forty-two hours and twenty-seven minutes can seem. It probably would have taken me six more months to realize how bored I was with her, but it would have seemed shorter." - Rick, age 31.

"Andrew was mad when I told him I didn't want to go out with him again. He said I'd regret it. For the next two weeks, I kept getting pizzas delivered to my door - at all hours. My sisters and I ate half of them, gave some away, froze the rest. I love pizza. I say, if that's your way of getting even, Andrew, knock yourself out." - Francine, age 43.

"I found out James was married. When I confronted him, he asked whether this meant that we couldn't see each other anymore!" - Whitney, age 29.

"When I asked what he did, Nick told me he stole cars. Ha ha, very funny, I thought. Okay, so he doesn't want to talk about work. But we had fun, went out a few more times. Then he suddenly stopped calling. I was hurt, to be dropped without a hint. Then I got a letter from jail." - Arlene, age 33.
