OMG... Most Awkward Wedding Ever!

This afternoon's wedding was okay, but it was kinda awkward since my uncle isn't speaking to my mom, his sister... and didn't acknowledge us at all. At least his wife acknowledged us, and of course my grandma did. My sister said it would be funny if we saw Tim and Maxine there, since Tim is Joyce's colleague: we saw them with baby Joshua, and waved at them. Our "cousin" Anna came over and gave Mom a hug and offered her place to my parents when they go to Toronto for Jon's grad this week. She's nice, and she's not family by blood really. Steph told me that she'd heard from Cindy that Sandra had a baby girl named Elizabeth Grace a couple weeks ago: so her Joshua now has a sister.. so cute! Nice news to hear! We saw some "cool uncle" who'd offered my sister drinks in Vegas when she was 13... he's quirky, heh.

We were kinda going to leave early, but my cousin Lillian has a good heart: she told us that they'd be taking family pictures, so we waited around till it was our turn. At least she personally thanked me for coming, which was nice. On the way home after the 30-minute wedding, Mom rehashed the family drama with my sister and me. It all started when Joyce (my cousin Aaron's now-wife) relayed misinformation about Grandma to my uncle, who believed what his kids said without question... that included certain untrue allegations by my other cousin Yvonne. My mom threatened not to attend the wedding (we were invited with 3 days to go before the RSVP deadline) and sent my uncle some letter detailing her feelings about how he should be more adult and act like a man by asking her about what his kids said. (there was a much meaner version that she decided not to send: "You're the man, so you apologize first!") Aiyoh... o_O

I can understand my mom being stressed / hurt, and she doesn't want us three to be like that to each other: "If your kids say something mean about their aunt or uncle, talk to each other first!" After some time at home, we went out again to pick my dad up from church. Apparently, Sam had been calling me yesterday / today, and asked Melia where I was: eep. I'll apologize to him tomorrow. The banquet was all right, but again kinda awkward as we didn't really know anyone. I talked to Tim and Maxine a little: Tim referred Sarah to make the wedding cake! The invitation said to come at 6, but the banquet room wasn't ready till 7. Never been at a banquet that did things like that before...

My sister took pictures of me with Tim and Maxine, and tried suggesting that she'd do embarrassing things in order to get Aaron and Joyce to kiss... that side of the family would be the ones who'd be embarrassed, she said. Maybe, but I reminded her that Tim and Maxine were there even if we didn't see anyone there ever again. That deterred her, thankfully. My cousin Yvonne's daughter Andrea is two, and got bored rather quickly. She was fascinated by looking out the windows, and by my mom's shiny top. I got her to wave to me, assisted by her dad William. She gave balloon animals to my grandma, her great-grandma. The water tasted off, so my sister and I stuck to red wine and coffee. We left when everyone was at the dessert buffet, so my mom wouldn't have to say congratulations to the couple or face her brother. At least my aunt personally thanked me for coming during the toasting of tables... maybe she was just being polite, but it was appreciated! Ironic that she'd turn out to be the cordial one, heh.

Steph has a bad feeling that this will be the last time we see Grandma, since she did say that she could die happy once Aaron (her favorite grandson) was married. Who knows... she might take a turn for the worse in Hong Kong when she's there to fix her eyes again. At any rate, there will probably be no contact if her funeral's there... they'd better TELL us if such a thing happens, since that would be bad by any standard if they didn't! Very sad, indeed...

There is NO SUCH THING as an intensive purpose! / "I'm going to BreakOut!" / "Octothorpes!"

Eric picked me up last night and then I was incredibly random. He commented on my cackling almost as soon as I got into the car, and tried to trick me into sitting on his Kleenex box by putting a bag of stuff over it... that did not work, even though he thought it would. I can be out of it sometimes, but not THAT weird! The mountains were so green because there was no snow on them, and that made them look closer to us than they really were.. gotta love perspective! Some people tried to cross in front of us.. Eric waved at them to let them know he was there, and the first group waved back. Uh, hello... he could run you over if he wanted to! The ride to church was interesting, as usual: he asked me again what the reason was for not returning my bowls this week, so I told him that it was because of Aaron and Joyce's wedding and not being able to get home after Fellowship.

The speaker last night spoke of untamed faith and being wild... it was fine content-wise, but kinda mediocre grammar-wise. He spoke of a crowd of Communist officers who "bursted" into an illegal home Bible Study in Russia (and also of a 16-year-old girl who died for her faith by "busting" through the crowd of believers there), and also said something like "For every intensive purpose that I have..." near the end. Ugh! It was interesting when he said that he'd been at his church (Hallelujah EFC in Toronto) for six years (he's only 24 and married to a hot blonde, he says!) and that the English Congregation was originally about 30 members: now it's at about 100, and that's not all due to the original people having babies! As Eric told me then, that would be impressive, haha!

After the program, we all went downstairs for refreshments. I talked to Frances about my hat: she thinks it's new, when I got it from Jon last summer and have been wearing it for a few months! Talked generally to Sheena, Jen, Chalaine, Vanessa, and a few others about life, my MSN name ("Down With The Establishment!" works!), and going to Ikea to get picture frames for the Benjamin kiddies. I told Jeremy how my mom wanted him to bring Jon's empty suitcase on Sunday: since he'd forget, he set a reminder to himself on his phone... very handy! Turns out he's going to a wedding today as well.. I remembered his saying something about that a few weeks ago. He doesn't really know the people who are getting married, but a bunch of his family's going from Kelowna so it'll be nice to spend time with them.

We also tried the Sparkling Green Apple pop, which tasted interesting: he said it was like green apple bubble tea, and Margaret thought the color was very intense and sorta like Scope... although Steph said that Scope was lighter! We laughed about Jon's grad mixup: Vivian and Karen were concerned too, of course. Eric asked me about Jon's blog reference to "mediocre minds like mine and intelligent minds like my sister's"... not me, but Steph! I only heard about it after the fact, dude.

Michelle, Steph, Vanessa, Daniel, Danielle, and Fidela were trying to come up with names for the post-Floodlight upcoming post-secondary group, and a few of us were trying to help out with suggestions.

* Race (from the verse about running a good race)
* Breakout ("THINK about it, Daniel... I'm going to Breakout?!")
* 180 ("Fidela doesn't like it!")
* Floodlight Upgrade ("That sounds kinda lame...")
* Ignite ("Isn't Lucas' church doing something with that name?")
* Solitude / Culture Shock ("No, no... we want them to come!")
* Grow! ("I'm going to GROW! Uh, yeah.. sounds real nice!")
* Contagious ("I know we want them to be on fire for God, Daniel... but think about it! I'm going to Contagious?! We might as well name the group SARS or Bird Flu!")
* Ascend ("That means growing, right guys?")
* FreeFalling (that made both me and Jeremy think of the Tom Petty song, and it made the others say "uh... you'd die if you did that from a parachute!")

Eventually, we settled on the last one and figured it would grow on us. This was just in time for Michelle to call Eric and Jeremy geeks since they were drawing graphs and such on one of the chalkboards downstairs. I don't recall what they were for, but that was an interesting diversion... Jeremy brought up octothorpes, which set us off on a discussion of our favorite words. (BIFTECK, defenestration, and more!) Danielle asked if Steph knew her and Citrus' anniversary since Steph was wishing Margaret and Jeff a happy one of going out... she knows a week afterwards, and recognized a picture on Citrus' computer when she went to borrow a shirt last time we were at his place as the one he sent her when he told her about his new girlfriend! ("I knew you'd ask that... *file transfer a millisecond later*") Rich reminded us of the meeting on Sunday since we were voting on selling the church: without that, the new building project cannot proceed! Then we loitered outside of the church since we couldn't do that inside the building.

Steph, Vanessa, and others were pretty crazy discussing inside jokes ("I want to twirl!" from the SIMPSONS), BS meaning Bible Study and Eric's original reply to a Daniel Fellowship email involving BS (he still gets those emails but doesn't mind, since they're often more informative than the ones for OUR group!), barbecues, the SLB pics Steph has yet to send to us, dinner on July 15 (we're cooking for them?!), the cooking competition, the sign where Jeremy parked his bike ("It would be hilarious if it was a sign that said not to park your bike there!"), and other things. Jeremy, Eric, Steph, and I were going to go eat... but incredible tiredness and other considerations won out.

On the way home, we discussed invisible pictures (Eric apparently sent some people pictures in an attachment that wasn't on his email). We also talked about Ivan's proposal to Karen IN CHURCH SERVICE (and he had to apologize for it since the deacon board obviously didn't like it), Karen's fellowship emails, my being incredibly random about cellphones getting lost in caverns, the booty logo, Jon getting mixed up with the grad dates (my sister and I found it amusing since we didn't have to pay any $200 penalties!), and other things. Very interesting ride home, haha.

After a while at the townhouse, I read my brother's anthology of British Lit. My brother called at almost 3 AM his time, so I actually talked to him for a while. He's heard that Mom thinks I like Jeremy, and that is NOT true. (it helps if you're with someone you know!) I told him about recent Fellowship doings and other things: it was interesting to talk to him, haha. Then I tried sleeping at 1:30 AM, which didn't work so well. I think I kinda fell asleep at 4-ish, then was awakened at 6:20 by traffic. Yeah, I definitely had a cup of black coffee at breakfast!

Now it's lunchtime (wonton and dumplings) before the wedding. Thank goodness my sister agreed to let me use her laptop. :D

Best idea ever!

Eric just called to see whether I could bus over to Cambie / Jacombs again quickly. Not really likely, as the bus trip alone would take like an hour. (that's how long it took on the night of Phil's farewell bash at Citrus' place...) So he said he'd just pick me up rather than go straight from work. That's the best idea ever, as I still have to shower and eat before I leave for the weekend.

Plans for tomorrow: the wedding (we'll see how family drama affects it or not), hanging around downtown, then the banquet. I wouldn't be surprised if I had to sleep over at the townhouse tomorrow night, too. At least my dad's computer now works to update GJ... I was just as surprised to see the update page there as my sister was to hear about it when she asked on Sunday night!

LJ Flame Cup, sleeping, Kathy's death from cancer, quizzes

LJ Flame Cup.. the things you find in LJ News posts... :D

Sleeping early (12:30 AM) doesn't work if you simply cannot sleep! So it's not a case of "punishing myself," as my sister likes to think. It may be that in the end, but it's not like I sleep at 2:30 AM deliberately... I think I really *am* a night person! Now I have even less time than I thought to get everything done: eating lunch / dinner, showering, washing that dreaded THING with the special shampoo since a certain someone wants me to wear it to the wedding (and figured I wouldn't say anything about it :P), laundry (only one working $1.25 washer and dryer out of two on the second floor... the other two on the third floor are $1.75!), catching up here before I shut this thing down for at least tomorrow and maybe the weekend, etc. Oh well... not much to be done about this state of affairs. *sigh*

Via Michael (rubarabadom), I've heard that someone who used to be on my friends list has passed away. Kathy and I exchanged Christmas cards in 2004, but she took me off her friends list on December 21 of that year. I didn't know she had cancer. RIP, Sadsong. :(

Dream: Quadruplets and leading Sunday worship

Note: LJ College Life blogquiz, by Elara.

I've had another interesting dream... what else is new these days with my subconscious?

It started with my dad driving me, Jon, and Steph around town and pointing out various places of interest. We saw Nathan and Jeremy on a street corner; since they wanted to jam at our place later, we let them into the car. After that, it was home time where a bunch of our friends were already. We were jamming and having fun when Carol B. suddenly came onto the scene to inform us that there was a lady pregnant with quadruplets from Edmonton around the neighborhood.

I don't think we paid the news much attention because we were busy with the music and refining various nuances. But what she had to say next made us stop: apparently, the pregnant lady's abusive husband wanted to take her to Spain, but she was having none of it. So then we mobilized a benefit effort, and made notes all over various dry-erase boards. Ultimately, we found the lady in Spain and were able to take her back to Vancouver at least. The police caught her abusive husband and took him to jail. Edmonton would have had to wait, since only two of her quadruplets survived: two girls, named Tatiana and Tatooine or some other weird name like that. :P

After we made sure that the people involved were safe, we continued touching up the music so that Nathan and Jeremy could lead Sunday worship. That in itself proved to be interesting because the little kids wanted to go up there and jam with them. We let the kids do that after Sunday School, and they had lots of supervised fun with the drums and guitar. Then I woke up...

Blasts from the past, no more green shorts

I went out just now to get KFC fried chicken, some birthday cards, stickers, microwaveable meals, and Ben and Jerry's Vermonty Python / the Gobfather ice cream. Good thing I stayed away from Yuen Shing: too much Asian snack temptation there, haha. Had a cheeseburger and fries at McDonald's, then had to go to Maxim's Bakery to get an orange Crush since I somehow didn't get a Coke as part of dinner. I'm doing well with my KFC fried chicken cravings, as it was December 8 the last time I wanted some! ;) Now I'm trying to balance the unhealthiness by drinking some water... yes, I know it doesn't really work like that. Humor me. :P

I was minding my own business in the mall when I heard my name being called from behind me rather loudly. Since it could have been someone else (even though the mall's dead after 7), I continued until I heard my name again. I turned around to see some random dude on a cellphone, and recognized him as David Shaler, a guy I knew in Palmer. (junior high) He said I looked good, and asked what I was doing these days... he mentioned that he'd driven down to Vegas to see Madonna, and was actively looking for a wife to have kids with. Hopefully she doesn't come with the kids, but you never know! We're getting old, since we'll both be 30 by December... it was interesting to see him, since he'd filled out since those days.

I don't have a bowling bag (as I used to carry all my books around in a bag in the first part of Gr. 8 since I hated using the lockers provided), nor do I still remember everyone's student numbers (I used to steal all the attendance sheets and make lists of those, and thought that certain absent students were all really having sex with each other in the bushes; don't ask! )... but he said I wore my knapsack / body bag well, har har. Interesting little diversion, even though I had to prove that I knew who he was (why did THAT make me so nervous?!)... as we went our separate ways, I could hear him talking on his cellphone about how he hadn't seen me in a long time and such. (to April, he says)

When I got home, I checked my email to find one from my sister about how she'd be in a wheelchair next week. But I actually read the email... she actually means that she'll be in the Rick Hansen thing for spinal cord injury on June 11. I figure I can get a ride home from church with Eric, unless he's doing that too.

I also took a big load of garbage out to the trash bin: in the process of throwing things out, I discovered that my favorite pair of green oversize shorts had a big stain on it of unknown origin. Sadly, I decided that it had to go... I'm sure I tried washing it last summer and simply forgot about it till now. *sigh*

White diamonds, calling Nina, plans / Glitter! / what I would do

White diamonds achieved today so far:

* I got my first white diamond in Bookworm by using two blue tiles / sapphires in the word "gay," then used it in the word "koi."

* I got another white diamond by using three yellow / gold tiles in the word "sei," then used it in the word "yow."

* I got a third white diamond by using two blue sapphires in the word "king," then used it in the word "hay."

I talked to Nina by phone just now to see if we could make plans to meet. At first, we were going to meet tomorrow at the Alma Running Room, but then figured it might not be a good idea since she'd be running around everywhere: Surrey, Vancouver, Burnaby, and back to Surrey again. Then she brought up Metrotown and this Sunday since she's usually off on Sundays: Metrotown is fine since I now know how to get there on one bus (bus mishaps applied against future knowledge), but this weekend decidedly is NOT with the wedding and the AGM.

Maybe some other day next week after 4 PM... she says her mom helps look after her son Dylan when she's at work, and then it's her turn when she gets home. Makes sense, and at least she has help with the kid! Actually, I heard him in the background wanting his mom, so we quickly ended the phone call. It'll be nice to see her again when it happens, and I can always talk to her in the evenings if I wish. :D

Tomorrow I might go to the mall to get Jason, Amos, Nicholas, and Joshua some birthday cards and stickers: Jason and Joshua need two each if I'm going to keep things up till August 2007 (two generic ones, and one each for a one-year-old and a two-year-old), and Nicholas needs one for a one-year-old. I declined my mom's offer to go to Richmond Centre earlier today since I didn't really feel like going out. I like doing things on my own schedule, so I'm not insanely rushed.

Glitter Maker... you can make the coolest graphics ever with this for sigs and such on message boards. :D

What would you do if your brother broke his leg?
What would you do if your mom was sick?
What would you do if you were banned from email?
What would you do if you failed an exam?
What would you do during a school fire?
What would you do if you needed money?
You are...a practical person who thinks and acts wisely

Shiny corsets, cyncism, private parts, and implicit association tests

Here are some more Harvard Implicit Association Tests on Natives / Whites, skin tone, gender-science, sexuality, age, weapons, race, gender-career, disability, weight, and Canadians / Americans.

Harvard Implicit Association Tests

I did the Natives implicit association test at Harvard.

You have completed the Native Am.-White Am. IAT.
The line immediately below summarizes the results of your task performance.
Your data suggest a moderate association of White Am. with Foreign and Native Am. with American compared to Native Am. with Foreign and White Am. with American.

If your feedback was 'The result could not be determined,' click here.

Your result, reported above, is already corrected for the order in which you took the parts of the IAT. If you have a question about the effect of order, please read the answer to FAQ 1 on the page of FAQs for this test.

This test measures the association between the social group 'Native American' and the attribute 'American.' Inherent in the name of the group itself lies the information that Native Americans are the original inhabitants of the continent of North America. The history of the group in the United States is unique in that a native population has rarely experienced its fate in modern history. In testing this association, we are prepared for the ironic possibility that Native Americans may not be as strongly associated with their own land as are the European-ancestry groups who displaced Native Americans from much of their original territory.

We have explicitly chosen to represent the category 'America' via icons and examples that are not biased in favor of White America -- for example, we do not use the American flag or monuments that are explicitly the creation of White Americans. You randomly received one of two versions of this task. One uses natural scenes from the American landscape that can easily be associated with Native Americans; the other uses names of cities and states in which the names have Native American origins (e.g., Seattle). The selection of these stimuli provides full opportunity to reveal an association between Native Americans and their country.

Our early assessment is that, on average, it will be relatively harder for most Americans to associate Native Americans with America, although the bias may not be very large, perhaps given our choice of stimuli. As usual, after sufficient data collection we will report the overall effect from the test as well as data from groups that vary in demographics and in conscious attitudes and stereotypes.

If you have unanswered questions about the task, please review the frequently asked questions about this type of research. Any followup questions can be directed to the researchers by email at that page.

I had to do this one three times over before I got this result! My first time, I had way too many mistakes. The second time, I completed the test successfully... but then accidentally clicked on a link to the FAQ, which automatically expired my session.

Harvard Implicit Association Tests

I did the skin tone implicit association test at Harvard.

You have completed the Darker Skin-Lighter Skin IAT.
The line immediately below summarizes the results of your task performance.
Your data suggest a strong automatic preference for Light Skin compared to Dark Skin.

If your feedback was 'The result could not be determined,' click here.

Your result, reported above, is already corrected for the order in which you took the parts of the IAT. If you have a question about the effect of order, please read the answer to FAQ 1 on the page of FAQs for this test.

The interpretation shown above is described as 'automatic preference for Darker Skin' if you responded faster when Darker Skin faces and Good words were classified with the same key as opposed to Lighter Skin faces and Good words. It is marked 'automatic preference for Lighter Skin' if you were faster when giving the same response to Lighter Skin faces and Good words. Depending on the magnitude of your result, your automatic preference may be described as 'slight,' 'moderate,' 'strong,' or 'little to no preference.'

If you have unanswered questions about the task, please review the frequently asked questions about this type of research. Any followup questions can be directed to the researchers by email at that page.

Harvard Implicit Association Tests

I did the gender-science implicit association test at Harvard.

You have completed the Gender-Science IAT.
The line immediately below summarizes the results of your task performance.
Your data suggest a slight association of Male with Science and Female with Liberal Arts compared to Female with Science and Male with Liberal Arts.

If your feedback was 'The result could not be determined,' click here.

Your result, reported above, is already corrected for the order in which you took the parts of the IAT.

The interpretation shown above is described as 'automatic association between Science and Male' if you responded faster when Science and Male words were classified with the same key as opposed to Liberal Arts and Male items. It is marked 'automatic association between Liberal Arts and Male' if you were faster when giving the same response to Liberal Arts and Male items.

I did the sexuality implicit association test at Harvard.

Your data suggest a moderate automatic preference for Straight People compared to Gay People.

If your feedback was 'The result could not be determined,' click here.

Your result, reported above, is already corrected for the order in which you took the parts of the IAT. If you have a question about the effect of order, please read the answer to FAQ 1 on the page of FAQs for this test.

The interpretation shown above is described as 'automatic preference for GAY PEOPLE' if you responded faster when GAY PEOPLE faces and Good words were classified with the same key as opposed to STRAIGHT PEOPLE faces and Bad words. It is marked 'automatic preference for STRAIGHT PEOPLE' if you were faster when giving the same response to STRAIGHT PEOPLE faces and Good words. Depending on the magnitude of your result, your automatic preference may be described as 'slight,' 'moderate,' 'strong,' or 'little to no preference.'

Attitudes vary in the degree to which their expression is socially acceptable. For example, to express liking or favorability toward one's school or local sports team is socially acceptable just as it seems to be acceptable, in the appropriate circumstances, to express negative attitudes toward a rival school or sports team.

In recent years, it has become less socially acceptable to express negative attitudes toward some groups, for example groups defined by race or by physical disability. In this context, attitudes toward gay people are of special interest because laboratory studies show that the social acceptability of negative attitudes toward gays has changed relatively little in recent years. We also know that anti-gay attitudes are observed on measures of implicit attitude such as the IAT, and that a person's conscious and implicit attitudes toward gays are more often in agreement with each other than they are for some other socially significant domains.

Harvard Implicit Association Tests

I did the age implicit association test at Harvard.

You have completed the Young - Old IAT.
The line immediately below summarizes the results of your task performance.
Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Old compared to Young.

If your feedback was 'The result could not be determined,' click here.

Your result, reported above, is already corrected for the order in which you took the parts of the IAT. If you have a question about the effect of order, please read the answer to FAQ1 on the page of FAQs for this test.

The interpretation shown above is described as 'automatic preference for Old' if you responded faster when Old faces and Good words were classified with the same key as opposed to Young faces and Good words. It is marked 'automatic preference for Young' if you were faster when giving the same response to Young faces and Good words. Depending on the magnitude of your result, your automatic preference may be described as 'slight,' 'moderate,' 'strong,' or 'little to no preference.'

Racial profiling as a term, has been introduced in recent years to capture an old practice among law enforcement agents, especially police and immigration and customs officials: the selective stopping, searching, and interrogating of individuals who hold membership in groups that are believed to be more likely to commit particular crimes. In a sense, when psychologists study the nature of stereotypes, they are studying exactly this process in general terms: the degree to which knowledge about a group influences judgments of individual members of the group.

The various mental abilities that underlie the function of identifying that x is a member of category X, and remembering what Category X does and represents are vital – the ability to perceive and categorize, to learn and remember are essential features of human intelligence. But these very same processes so fundamental to our daily mental functioning can be implicated in the denial of equally fundamental rights to people who are innocent bearers of markers of their social group. The many instances of people who are wrongly suspected and accused is too great to mention. We point to only one case that has come to represent the sad consequences of well-intentioned profiling. Police officers in New York shot and killed a citizen, Amadou Diallo, who they believed was reaching for a weapon. In fact, Amadou Diallo was reaching for his wallet to provide identification to the police officers.

Our position, perhaps an unpopular one, is that the unconscious roots of profiling lie in every mind. In the Race-Weapons test you completed, we provide the occasion for recognizing the automatic association between racial groups and weapons relative to harmless objects. The result of this test probably underestimates the true extent of this association. In order to give every benefit to obtaining the alternative association (African American and harmless objects), we explicitly included examples of weapons that are not associated with that group (e.g., bayonets, swords, bombs, axes). When we demonstrate the bias nevertheless, we are revealing the strong association between African Americans and harmful weapons.

Racial profiling is first and foremost a mental act that can, given a supportive environment, result in errors that were unintended by those who perform them. The protections against such errors, given its automatic nature, will need to be more serious than requesting individual citizens and especially agents of the state to "just say no" to profiling

Although the disabilities we depict in this test are physical, they have the potential to function as social stigmas. This test measures a likely indicator of such stigma in the form of an implicit bias against people with physical disability. Such bias may be present in persons who do not consciously hold any negative attitude toward the disabled. As such it is important to be vigilant about its power to potentially influence behavior toward those who are disabled, compared to those who do not have a disability.

The test represents the disabled category with symbols that are familiar from their uses as public signs. We contrast these signs with other, neutral, public symbols. Because physical disability has no borders, we have used symbols that should be recognizable internationally, permitting the test to be used world wide.

Harvard Implicit Association Tests

I did the Canadian-American implicit association test at Harvard.

You have completed the study

Thank you for your participation. In this study, we are investigating conscious and unconscious preferences for different topics varying in importance, familiarity, and relevance to the self. Your result, reported below, is already corrected for the order in which you performed the task.

Your data suggest a slight automatic preference for Canadian compared to American.

Depending on the magnitude of your result, your automatic associations may be described as 'slight,' 'moderate,' 'strong,' or 'little to no preference (or identity).' How implicit associations affect our judgments and behaviors is not well understood. Also, the score described above may be influenced by a number of variables including your familiarity with the categories and the particular items used to represent the categories. As such, the score should serve as an opportunity for self-reflection, not as a definitive assessment of your implicit thoughts or feelings. This and future research will clarify the way in which implicit thinking and feelings affects our perception, judgment, and action.

The topic of this task was randomly assigned to you from a list of approximately 100 topics. You are welcome to complete as many sessions as you wish, and every session will be a different topic. Some will be topics you have thought about many times, others might be new or unusual topics that you have not considered before. Just return to the login page and enter your email address to start again.

From this study, we hope to learn more about variations in conscious and unconscious thoughts and feelings that people have for a variety of domains. With this knowledge, we hope to better understand the nature of our preferences for domains that are familiar or unfamiliar to us. If you have unanswered questions about the task, please review background information about this research and follow the links to the questions of specific interest to you. Thanks again for your participation.

More family drama

I just called my mom to make sure I had accurate facts for an online survey I plan to post later. Neither of my siblings had real opposite-sex alternatives for their names, but they did have other same-sex alternatives! My name could be used for both boys and girls, so my parents went with it since they liked it so much. Jon might have been named Christopher, and Steph could have been named Bernice (my mom apparently had a nice co-worker by that name), which might have caused confusion later in life with her friend Bernice Gan!

She told me that Grandma had come home yesterday to find a pair of shoes, but she found it rude that my cousin Aaron and Joyce wouldn't come in. Mom has no idea why her brother Michael would listen to his kids instead of her, but I'm sure that people give more weight to others' opinions if they see / communicate with them frequently! Ah, family drama... Mom also seems to think that she needs my support because they might be cold to us at the wedding. She also thought about not going to the wedding (my dad didn't take off work for the ceremony, according to my sister... this was spun by Mom as "the church needs him!"), but it's a little late for that. :P

Then she told me about a mixup concerning Jon's grad tickets, which means that they'll be leaving sooner than they thought. New dates: June 8-19... a Wednesday to two Mondays ahead. Apparently, everyone thought he was graduating with a Master of Music... since Steph was looking it up online, she found he was graduating with a Master of Arts instead next Friday! That caused my mom to email my brother after she got all the flights changed and such to next Wednesday: she wasn't impressed with the $200 penalty, and told him that it was NOT money well spent; in fact, it was wasted! Jon won't be coming home with them since he still has that wedding to play for. Fine with me, since I wouldn't tell him to not play at the wedding! (Mom wouldn't either) She wants me to email / call Jeremy to make sure that he brings Jon's empty suitcase with him... eh, maybe I'll do that later or tell him on Friday for Sunday, haha.

Nina plans / Occasion music meme

Nina messaged me on YM again to say that she's decided to pick up her Jericho Beach running package on Thursday, so we exchanged phone numbers. She says we'll have to meet for coffee after 4 PM, which is just fine with me! It's more doable, given the way my sleeping schedule has been since Christmas... o_O

Stolen from at least two people: The OCCASION music meme!

Ice Cream / Birthday Deaths / Many Smileys / 71-Question Survey

Note: LJ Secret Ninja Friends / LJ Missing Friends / LJ Cast of Invader Zim blogquizzes. (by Laurene, Mike, and Sarah Elaine Ramirez)

I should buy Ben and Jerry's Vermonty Python ice cream next time I go to Save-On Foods. I'm sure I've seen that new flavor around, and want some before it goes out of stock or something! I finished my Coffee Toffee Crunch a while ago, actually. (and I should get the Gobfather just for the name... I hear it's good anyhow, haha!)

List of people who died on their birthdays

I spent some time uploading about 200 images from Erik's site to my Smileys photo album. If you want to use them, please save them to your own server. I could post a selection of the images here, but I think it's better if you click that link.. I might never use some of these on a regular basis (except for the birthday ones), but at least they're available if needed. :D What can I say... I'm a , and I know it. :D

Nina's son, tag editing, Blogger comments, quizzes

Hey, Nina actually messaged me about her son Dylan! He's almost two years old, and his birthday is July 15. She wondered whether I remembered her... of *course* I do! Says he has the flu, but is better than this morning. She mentioned that she's busy with work and this weekend's 10K walk at Jericho Park. Doesn't sound too bad then! ;) When I mentioned that my sister and friends were in the Sun Run, she said she was there too.. yes, I heard that Vancouver broke a record with the number of runners / registrants this year. Then she wondered whether I'd be interested in going for coffee someday: you betcha! :D She works full time on the weekdays till 3 PM... I'm sure we can work around that somehow. She's coming down to Vancouver either on Thursday or Friday this week to pick up some package for her walk at the Alma Running Room Clinic, and will let me know tomorrow... fine with me!

After posting a bunch of quizzes at Our Place that I've taken over the past six days, I edited my Flaming Mad / Nin Jiom Pei Pa Koa tags. Now to gank a bunch of smileys when I'm done checking some other stuff on here like email and my friends page! :D

Hmm. I got a comment on Blogger from firstlemmingoverthecliff: "Wow... you caught like the best CSI episode ever for it to be your first one." Heh, I think I agree. Although I've caught bits and pieces of it over the years it's been on, I've never really watched a full episode of it. The same went for Seinfeld until that time a bunch of us went to Stella's house and watched it years ago. That was unfortunately most memorable for afterwards, when I got home and found a rather pissed-off note from my mom ordering me to do all the dishes at 1 AM. Seems she was too confused over where I was ("We called Lesley's place and you weren't there!") when I'd TOLD her! :P

You're nice and you have a great personality, but a lower sex drive than most... or you've never had sex (which I commend you for). You appear to be a Democrat or something resembling one. You'd be a great girlfriend, and maybe a great soulmate someday. Sex drive isn't as important as many people would have you think, plus when you get married it usually opens up a bit. Just find the right person for you (if you haven't already), and live out your life.

I'm also guessing that if you threw a party, you wouldn't have the same cd playing on repeat... you'd probably mix it up with some good old stuff and some great new rock.

(On a side note, listen to my band at WWW.ANGWISH.COM ... buy some shirts and some bumper stickers, and wait for some new products like Angwish underwear and Angwish lingerie / Angwish enemas.
