We've set a new record: SIX pregnant ladies at a baby shower!

Frances, Helen, and I went to see Tim and Maxine and their baby at the hospital. We saw Brenda, John, Jason, Sophia, and Brenda's parents there. They were getting ready to discharge Maxine, but she was okay with us seeing her. She looks good for someone who just had a baby, and who hadn't had much sleep! (her water broke at midnight, she only had full labor for an hour, Timbit was born at 3 AM early Friday morning, and she only had like six pains which she likened to period cramps!) We watched her change her first diaper, and the kid looks HUGE... not like a newborn at all! He looks like he's a few days old, even... he was 7 pounds and 12 ounces, after all. (Joe already uploaded pictures from Helen's digicam onto the computer) Babies are so soft and adorable... he was good and quiet most of the time, but he definitely didn't like getting changed / the flashing camera lights / so many people there.

After we watched Tim struggle a long time with the carseat because the straps were put in backwards, we walked them out of the hospital and went to TJ's baby store to look at / buy stuff. The clothes are so cute, and the gender clothing disparity starts early: there's a lot of girl stuff in comparison to the boy stuff! They had all kinds of things: twin snuggle blankets, milk chocolate cigars, receiving blankets, strollers, books, cribs, etc. I flipped through a book of baby names: if I wanted to give my future kid a Shakespearean moniker, I'd do better than Hero or Petruchio! :P

After that, it was off to Joe and Helen's for the baby shower. We saw Ethan / Seren / little Nathaniel / little Matthew, plus we learned that Natalie and Stella are pregnant. David brought his wife Rosenda along: she had a contraction scare this morning (she's three weeks behind Sophia in terms of due date), but was feeling better by afternoon. I wish I could have talked to her more to learn how she was adjusting to life here and everything else from the Philippines, but maybe another time!

We set a new record for pregnant ladies at a baby shower, too! Back in January, it had been only three (Lauren, Helen C., and Winnie: their babies respectively are Matthew, Nathaniel, and Megan), but now there were SIX! (Sophia, whose baby will be named Olivia; Rosenda, whose baby will be a boy; Amanda, whose daughter is probably due pretty soon.. they actually live next door to John and Sophia; Helen K., whose baby is due Nov. 25... if it's born then, the kid and my brother [plus Steph's old friend Courtney Matsumura] will share a birthday; Natalie, whose baby is due in January; and Stella, whose baby is due in February) Sophia did a trick with a gold necklace to see whether the babies would be boys or girls; it was pretty accurate with her and her sister-in-law!

It was good catching up with people; Natalie and Brad are moving back to Winnipeg at the end of the month, and Esther says she and Wes will take their honeymoon in November... more time to plan and save money! Most of the discussion revolved around pregnancy, Maxine's awesome labor, babies, barbecues, the summer, testing dipsticks, plans, and food. Seeing Winnie, Warren, Lauren, Danny (who's lost a lot of weight), Natalie, Vernon, Sarah, and others again was totally cool... as was seeing my old friends. :D

"We're going to dine on balls!"

No, not THOSE kinds of balls... you're all perverts. :P

Various highlights from the night:

7:10 PM -- My brother picks me up and jokes that he'll freak Cindy out with some System of a Down music. I spot a new Liquor Depot store at Lansdowne, and tell him that I've already had my liquor for the day. He's amazed I have so much bling to spend on myself, haha.

7:30 PM -- We get to Cindy's and Jon changes the music to Modest Mouse. I give Cindy her birthday present: she's never had a Bathroom Reader before, but always uses Our Daily Bread! Jon jokes that her trips to the bathroom will become more meaningful now.

7:45 PM -- Sheena shows me her Mexico pictures: the people there are so happy all the time even when they don't have as much as we do, and yet we here aren't happy with the amount of stuff we have! (their drivers and fellow team workers were the coolest people ever!)

8 PM -- I meet my brother's friend Tim Chan, who's doing a presentation on Reach Vancouver, where my brother says I should go. Perhaps... we'll see if I want a chill Saturday or not! I also get my brother to pass Connie and Jenny's birthday presents to Connie... there's nothing like relaxing with a book! Jon also says that he's seen Derek three times at Dragon Ball very recently... whoa!

8:15 PM -- I hear that Tim and Maxine had a baby boy this morning; Lily's nicknamed the baby "Timbit," in part because he doesn't have a name yet. Maxine only had a three-hour labor and not much relative pain! Dawn says the nickname's cute, and Jon jokes that they should actually give that name to the baby... Timbit Fok?!

8:30 PM -- I meet a new guy in our Bible Study group. He's way too quiet for my taste.. I can understand being shy, but you can't even HEAR him as he's reading from the Bible! There's mumbling, and then there's speaking SO softly that nobody can hear you. I also found his inappropriate bursts of amusement to be quite disconcerting. (goodness knows I can have those too, but at least I know when not to indulge!)

9:50 PM -- Randal's wearing a dark red Alaska T-shirt, so he and I compare notes on our respective Alaska cruises and the cruise ship ambience. His room was right near the engine... he could fall asleep, but not very quickly! The casino and the pool were cool, but the food was excellent!

10 PM -- We wonder where Dylan and Derek went, and then discover that there's food outside since the Chinese Fellowship is having a BBQ. It's kinda dark, but we manage. I go back in so I can catch Helen when she leaves.

10:10 PM -- I get a ride tomorrow from Frances and Helen K. We're going to see Tim and Maxine's baby at the hospital, have a light lunch, walk around somewhere, and then go to Sophia's shower.

10:20 PM -- Jon's group descends upon the BBQ. We proceed to dine on barbecued pork, marshmallows, chicken wings, beef balls, fish balls, hamburgers, and weiners... Jon had a barbecued carrot. People drive Vivian crazy with the head game of "I know something about you, but I won't tell you what it is until tomorrow. In fact, a bunch of other people also know what I know, or they SHOULD... and no, they won't tell you what it is either! You'll just have to wait." It's so dark that we have to use a flashlight or the light from cell phones to see if our meat is really done or not. Vivian threatens Dylan (who's taken over most of the BBQ duties at this point) with various consequences if she has worms coming out of her stomach tomorrow!

10:35 PM -- The mother of one of the Sunday School kids is there, and she tells me that her daughter Gwyneth really likes me. "I tell her it's okay to pray in English, even if her daddy doesn't like her praying... she says Auntie Frances told her to do it!" I'm not Auntie Frances, but it's good to know we're getting through to the kid... who can honestly be a MAJOR attention whore some mornings!

10:50 PM -- Learn that Tuesday's farewell for Dawn will be at the Rasputin restaurant at 7:15.. expensive Russian food (beef stroganoff?), here we come! (Jon would personally prefer the vibe of a nearby Jamaican restaurant, but it's not his choice to make!) During a discussion of Macs and PCs, Dawn tells me that she regularly curses out her computer when it won't work.. we both know we shouldn't say that kind of stuff as Christians and all, but there's just something about a stalled / crashing / non-working computer that brings out the absolute worst in us! (slamming the mouse generally won't work either!)

11:15 PM: We finally start heading for Dragon Ball... yes, we had bubble tea after all the food we just ate! (when they told us that they had lots of food left over, they MEANT it!) I have a pudding bubble tea, Danielle has a powdered coconut, Dylan has a taro / coffee, Citrus has a tea / coffee (yin-yang!), and Phil has a mango-strawberry. Jon orders one for his friend Rob, since it's his birthday. Our posse of 15 gives them quite a bit of business!

11:30 PM -- Eric and I see THE LOWEST GAS PRICE EVER at the gas station across the street from Dragon Ball. 01.9ยข a litre?! Score!!!

11:45 PM -- Danielle tells us that she hates it whenever people think she's from Calgary, since she's from Edmonton. Citrus tells us about the time that NOBODY remembered his birthday... not even his parents! Two weeks later, they were like: "Uh, did we forget your birthday?" (this was before Danielle, before Calgary, possibly before I started giving out birthday cards to everyone...)

12:15 AM -- We finally leave Dragon Ball. Jon tells Eric that our family may need a ride from him on Sunday if Erin doesn't sleep over tomorrow.

12:30 AM -- I discover anew that I hate my apartment front door lock.. there are times when it will budge, but this isn't one of them. Luckily, the management hasn't done anything to the front side door... phew!

Beer, kids met at the pool, baby showers, and new management

I went to Boston Pizza right after that last post, and got some Boston Royale pizza (it has olives, and I wasn't having the Zorba Greek pizza since it had feta cheese on it!) / hot wings (the extreme heat wings were almost too much for me last time) / Sleeman's Honey Brown lager. (it went down so easily that I could have had another, but I decided it was better not to!) "Sleeman" reminds me of these five kids I met while swimming one day years ago: Sarah, Steven, Sheena, Susan, and another sister whose name I can't remember. (but also started with S) Then that reminds me of some other sibling sets I met while swimming at Minoru Pool when I was younger: Katie and Simon Ieid; Danielle, Kristen, Amy, Adam, and Joey Porier; and Wesley, Calvin, Sidney, and Andrew Goldsmith. I can't believe I still remember all these names from LONG ago! I should go swimming again, as I still have a bathing suit, but nobody wants to see THAT sight! o_O

While I was out, I bought some baby shower gifts for Sophia: a baby shower card, baby oil, baby shampoo, baby powder, and a sippy cup. Lauren's little Matthew got a bunch from me as well, so I'm not slacking! (even little Nathaniel got something when I wasn't able to attend Helen's baby shower... but since I wasn't invited to Maxine's baby shower, I didn't get her anything!) If I can't get a ride tonight from Helen, I'll resign myself to not going tomorrow from 2 to 5. I can always give John and Sophia the presents at church on Sunday, after all. (what use do I have for half the items listed above?) Speaking of rides, I should maybe catch a ride with Eric to church on Sunday since my mom's working and my brother will have the other car for GCBC. I should call him tomorrow, or he might forget if I tell him tonight and expect him to remember on the typical Sunday morning! (it's happened before...)

I was also ditzy after lunch: I almost forgot my bag (but went back to get it) and my Air Miles card. No, it was not an effect of the alcohol. If anything, I get crazier than usual after drinking beer and such... not ditzy! That reminds me, I should try the Foggy Dew pub one of these days since it's like a block from where I live. (maybe when I feel like being cheap, depending on their prices!) Then I should try remembering not to go in my apartment building through the side door, since there's no keyhole there anymore... instead, I have to battle the recalcitrant front door lock! (ack, that's a pain! I'll bring it up with the management if they're next door... next week?) Man, the new apartment management is doing things to this place... when I did laundry yesterday, there was no knob on the laundry room door when I put my clothes in the washing machine, so I had to figure out how to leave the room! (but there was a shiny new knob when I put my clothes in the dryer) New darkish green coats of paint on the doors and walls, too... no longer kinda-sorta faded deep pinkish hues. (plus brand new yellow parking lines and white dividers!)

Even though I had a beer and water, I'm still thirsty... must be the heat. Go figure! Off to catch up on stuff now and rehydrate before I leave!

Oh yeah, and Henrik says he totally agrees we should meet up while he's here in October from Sweden. We'll see what happens... he'll keep me posted, since he is travelling with his father (who doesn't speak English well) and has a jam-packed tight schedule planned by his friends here and in Vernon!

Awana, T&T Supermarket, important stuff to remember, Audioscrobbler, anime style

I hate to use this thing as a repository for my important emails, but the truth is that if I don't have it down SOMEWHERE, I'll forget about it. *sigh*

This is an Awana email:

As you may know, we are going to start a new club: T & T (not supermarket, but Truth and Training) in September. The new club is for the 3rd graders. Now we've got several T & T clubbers already. However, we are still waiting for experienced AWANA leaders to accept the challenge of learning new things and leading a new club. I wish to receive the reply of each one of you whether you want to take this challenge. I hope that you'll pray about it before you make a reply.
There will be a basic leadership training on Sat, Aug 27, 9-2 p.m. at the Burnaby Alliance Church. Please reserve this day on your calendar if you decide to take the challenge. Also, for those semi-new leaders who want to refresh your knowledge about the club you are leading, this is a great opportunity, too.
Please remember the following important dates.
1. Basic leadership training: Aug 27, Sat, 9-2 p.m. at the Burnaby Alliance Church
2. AWANA leaders Orientation: (ALL must attend) Sept 3, Sat, 2:30-5 p.m. at the church.
3. AWANA leaders appreciation and fellowship BBQ: (ALL are invited) Sept 4, Sun, 6 p.m. at Patrick's residence.
4. AWANA new club year begins on Sept 10, Sat, 4-6 p.m.
5. AWANA annual leadership training conference: Oct 15, Sat, 8-4 p.m.
Looking forward to serving with you in the new challenging year!!
Blessings in Christ
Rebecca

I like the "T&T (not supermarket)" line, haha. :D

T&T Chinese Supermarket... we have a few here!

(although one of Clement's ex-girlfriends was the T&T owner's daughter, and she broke up with him ON HIS BIRTHDAY a few years back! o_O )

Year #6 of Awana coming up, and it just so happens that I'll have an Awana day on my birthday. Wonder how that will go.... still a bit early yet to be making plans for THAT! ;)

P.S. I figured out what Jasmine was wondering about... the flashing text on Level 3 of This Is Not Pr0n. ;) ("stop being so negative" means "STOP CLICKING!")

P.P.S. For anyone who might have me added as a friend on Audioscrobbler, I tend to listen to a CD until I'm really tired of it. That would be why I appear to be listening to nothing but the Clash's Clash on Broadway lately... at least I've changed the CDs in the 3-CD set! ;)

Pajo's, dying after playing a squillion hours of online games, cyborg name, OK Cupid quizzes

Went for fish and chips today at Pajo's in Steveston. It was all right, although I didn't appreciate my parents telling me that I deleted their important emails. Well, say it's important in the subject line... or else it'll get deleted along with the rest of my spam, particularly if it's 1:30 AM and all I want to do is go to bed already! Or just let it go, since you already scolded me about it LAST WEEK! :P

I also made some semblance of Friday plans with my brother: since my sister's going to bus, the three of us can probably go at the usual time, unless Jon's slim-chance concert plans are a go. We'll just email / MSN each other tomorrow, which sounds good to me. It was kinda chaotic over there since Vanessa was over, and my mom was telling her and Steph about the Pajo's coupons in her own Type A way. ;)

You may have heard about the guy that died after playing 50 hours of games non-stop. It's not the first time this has happened: in fact, the other guy was playing a game called One Thousand Years! There's gotta be a joke in there somewhere...

Much More Emotional

You have:
55% SCIENTIFIC INTUITION and
77% EMOTIONAL INTUITION
The graph on the right represents your place in Intuition 2-Space. As you can see, you scored well above average on emotional intuition and about average on scientific intuition. Keep in mind that very few people score high on both! In effect, you can compare your two intuition scores with each other to learn what kind of intuition you're best at. Your emotional intuition is stronger than your scientific intuition.

Your Emotional Intuition score is a measure of how well you understand people, especially their unspoken needs and sympathies. A high score usually indicates social grace and persuasiveness. A low score usually means you're good at Quake.

Your Scientific Intuition score tells you how in tune you are with the world around you; how well
you understand your physical and intellectual environment. People with high scores here are apt to succeed in business and, of course, the sciences.

You are Suzaku the Red Phoenix. You live in good fortune. Suzaku protects the South, and corresponds to summer, life, the element fire, red, and knowledge. Suzaku appears in times of great change and fortune. The Phoenix is said to appear only when a time of peace and prosperity is about to begin, and leaves when the era is about to end. It is debated whether the Phoenix causes the changes. Suzaku is often paired with Seiryu. You are a lucky person: You are very intelligent and manage to get by even when most would not.

The dark, sordid side of the Internet (killing yourself in an IRC chatroom) / Beer pics and icons

I was reminded of this story by a conversation I was having earlier. First heard the story on the SDMB, and I was horrified by it! This guy Brandon Vedas decided to kill himself by taking a whole cocktail of drugs, and did it while in an IRC chatroom. Here are the chat logs on the family memorial site... Warning: These files contain graphic descriptions of drug use and profanity.

Brandon, you will be missed: SDMB Thread 2.

Beer icon / picture album. I made it for my friend Mike at Our Place, but Jon and Jen might be interested in this too! (Guinness, Corona Extra, Labatt Blue, Heineken, Miller Lite, Budweiser...) I hate how Photobucket automatically reverts back to the "Upload pictures from computer" option after you've finished adding a bunch of pictures from URLs! Argh! Speaking of annoyances, I also hate it when the ads suddenly start talking to me. Blah!

Wild Rose Brewery in Calgary... thanks, Darren!

Hey, my Audioscrobbler thing DOES work now! Sweet! :D

Audioscrobbler, reaction to Alaska cruise photos

I got an email from Last.FM's Audioscrobbler saying that someone had added me to their friends list. I recognize the name (German Tim!), and I hope this version of Audioscrobbler works better than the last version. (referred to in this post, it stopped working for me around late November) Now, I wish I knew how to add him to my profile... I know Erika and Corey added me a long time ago, so I added them back. (and I'm in the RQ group, too) Guess I'll also have to re-install the plugin(s)... ah, the discussions Corey and I had last year about various aspects of the site! Time to explore... on the other hand, I wish the plugins actually worked. (yes, I did authenticate it.. now I can't remember how!) If it WAS working, you could check my recent tracks page for more detail. *sigh*

I sent out the link to my Alaska cruise photos to everyone in my email address book recently. (I really should add Randal to that, oops) Tim, Frances, Lisa, Connie, Andrea, Henrik, and Karen Choo emailed me back: we did have an overall good time, and the food was really one of the best parts of the whole experience! I told Connie that I had birthday cards and presents for her and her sister Jenny (they share a birthday, two years apart), and she gratefully said she was amazed at how I remembered everyone's birthdays. I've heard people say it's a gift of mine: Jason said that I have amazing birthday prowess, and Keith said I was the Birthday Queen. It's just what I do, for some reason. I know it can be very nice to have someone who remembers your birthday, so I think that's a way of spreading positivity and joy to others. (as Elaine put it to Hon years ago when we first met him)

Chewy cookies, general food cravings, alcoholic drinks, Henrik, and farewell pics

I want chewy cookies. Darren suggested getting some Chewy Chips Ahoy in a red bag, so I'll hopefully remember to look for it next time I'm at the store.

Then again, I also want pasta / sushi / soup... it never ends! But right now, I'm happy with my Chunky Monkey Ben and Jerry's ice cream. :D

Darren also mentioned finishing off some premium vodka: that just reminds me, I have some Captain Morgan's spiced rum which I haven't tried yet. (I'm afraid I'd need a corkscrew to open it if there's a cork, although I hear you can push the cork down with a pen. Never mind that... all I needed to do was open the lid, phew!) I also have some Kahlua, which I have tried. He likes Polish vodka: Belvedere or Chopin.

My Swedish friend Henrik emailed me a couple days ago to check if I was still alive. Definitely! He also mentioned that he'd be visiting relatives here and in Vernon, but that's not till October. (that would be literally cool, weather-wise *winks and laughs* ) I suggested half-jokingly that we should meet since I live here and he's so far away normally! We'll see how that goes, haha.

Vanessa sent us three pictures from last night:

There! Now you can kinda put faces to the names of all these church people I constantly talk about. ;)

I'd say that I can't believe Sean's email address (chiulove?!), but actually I very much CAN... if you knew Sean, you'd say the same thing! o_O
