Charlie is DEAD?! / Graboopi / Flying Bed and Clear Vale

I just found out that my Our Place friend Charlie died on his 57th birthday (8/23) in Greenville, Texas. Mike F. found the obituary online. He hadn't been in good health for a few years, but we still cared. I'll miss him! :(

Ack! It's a flying bed, and the party is being greeted by John's ghost! (after climbing the Wall of Destiny near Clear Vale to obtain the Fragment of Courage)

I had an epic LONG battle with endless Graboopi and Troll enemies; it lasted more than 90 minutes! (the Goopi and Graboopi monsters can call for help a LOT) End result: 33,377 experience points and 13,703 gold pieces! :D

Mid-Autumn Festival, Havarti, mooncake, and plans

Mom said something about mooncake and Grandma in an email, so I had to call to see what was up. I told her that Uncle Michael had told me that they wouldn't be coming on Sunday, hahaha. She invited me to dinner tomorrow if I want to see Havarti / Steph, but I thankfully have pre-existing plans because of MY dinner. Also, she said something about the Mid-Autumn Festival and mooncake with Chinese ham in it. Hm... I got her to pick me up on Sunday afternoon, so Chinese Eric won't have to come out and meet me at a Skytrain station, or drive me home afterwards. He IS a good friend, but I won't take advantage of it.

Me: "Mom, I should tell you about this... *does so* " Mom: "CHEH! Of course you should tell me!" Me: "... I TOLD YOU, RIGHT NOW!" o_O

People lining up to hang out with me?! GOOD FOR EGO!

Called Chinese Eric tonight, and we talked for a while before his mom had to use the phone. No big deal; I understand how these things work! I told him about thinking of post-dinner doings, Uncle Michael / Aunt Leslie not coming on Sunday since they need to pack, the weekend details, white Eric trying to get me out of the house on Friday (we'll see), Grandma, Mom being utterly exact (that's how parents are), and birthday doings. He HAD called me earlier to see whether I knew anything about white Eric and the football game on Saturday; nope, I don't know if he has tickets. Although if he DID, I would kill him since he said he'd go to my birthday dinner first! Then he asked whether I was surprised at Jeremy's news that Red Robin's is now closed down; you bet! He said that we'd all be like our parents in some way; probably true!

Says I can call him on Saturday if there are any more details, although it would be good if white Eric drove me since parking on Broadway on the weekends is a pain. He says that his sister has stuff to do on Saturday, so later DOES work out for him. That's what I was thinking, so we'll see. Eric thinks that people would line up to hang out with me, hahaha! Then I called Joey's, and it turns out that they don't take reservations from 6 to 9... apparently, we shouldn't have too much of a problem since they have a lot of dining space. I certainly HOPE not!

Poutine, Lindt chocolate, pub glasses, and Grandma

So much for not going out till Thursday - my laundry detergent cup is ruined after doing some laundry, so I had to get another one. Thank goodness I can shop on my OWN schedule! Found some pub glasses at London Drugs which were $1.20 each, so I bought four of them... good to have spares around, just in case! Also bought a 300g on-sale Lindt dark chocolate bar (the sale expires tomorrow), and some Ruffles sour cream and bacon chips. Then I went home to put it away before going out again for A&W poutine at the Richmond Centre food court - Troy Anthony is to blame for this, since he was posting pictures of said dish in Puckheads! Since I was out anyway, I decided to go see Grandma at Dogwood - I knew my mom would make a big deal out of my not coming today. I didn't go last Tuesday (but I went the next day!), and to hear her go on about it, it's like I never visited Grandma last week. *rage* When my parents offered to let me tag along for baby-minding, I said no. Then when my mom said I should call her if I needed a ride to the long-term care home tomorrow, I said I probably wouldn't be coming out. YAY FOR "ME" time, until the weekend anyway! They gave me some white nectarines for Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie, plus measuring tape to size out Grandma's feet / shoes before they left.

Grandma thought I was Steph AGAIN, and wanted me to eat food there; no thanks! Uncle Michael offered me two throat lozenges and a banana, which I took. We talked about transit, Aaron coming in November, their not coming to Sunday's dinner since they needed to pack, the long days involved in driving from Burnaby to Dogwood and back again, China, cruising, the Blue Jays-Mariners game, a monkey in a classic movie, and more. It was nice to actually talk to him, heh. When I decided to leave at 6 after Grandma had finished her dinner, I had JUST missed the Cambie bus! On the way home, two stupid bicyclists didn't see me and almost ran me over! FUCK!

DRAGON QUEST progress / Steve L. / Beefy Beef

I've finally progressed further in DRAGON QUEST VI than I did before the game originally froze on Thursday! :D I just hope it doesn't do that AGAIN... I'll be sure to save my SRM files just in case.

I sent Steve L. an email to wish him a happy early birthday; even though the time difference between here and Adelaide works in my favor, I still wanted to do so. I probably shouldn't be using Myles and Brittney's wedding as an excuse, but WHO KNOWS how busy I could be on that Saturday... o_O

The parents picked me up, and gave me a shortened pair of pants, plus some HELLO KITTY candy (which will be for the children), ready-to-eat pizza, and cooked chicken. Thank goodness I could put everything in the fridge and closet! We met up with Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie at Dogwood; Grandma looked worse today, and Aunt thought someone had hung her! She did have a mark on her neck, but you never know! Of COURSE my mom had to make a big deal out of my sitting in the middle because of "being polite to guests"; no wonder I'm aggravated, since I'm sure she does it to annoy me! I do recognize my need for downtime, so I'm not leaving the apartment till at least Thursday! Grandma thought I was Steph, but it was okay. I picked up three more pairs of pants there.

We went to Beefy Beef for lunch; I had spicy noodles and shaved ice with lychee / coconut jelly / pudding. Also got to talk to baby Ayler, who was pretty active, and fussy if he didn't get to look out at the bright sunshine from the window. We went to Trafiq coffee shop while Jon and Harmony met up with Jeremy at Matchsticks coffee shop. I had a chocolate eclair, but no coffee. Jon wanted a ride to Richmond, so we had to stick around town for more than an hour after dropping Uncle and Aunt off at Dogwood. We went to Oakridge library, which was okay. I managed to see Jeremy at the coffee shop; he had received my email, and I'm pretty sure THIS restaurant (Joey's) is still open! He'd gone to Chinatown and the surrounding area, and noticed a bunch of places which weren't open anymore: "What? These things changed, and I didn't notice till now?!" The car ride home was filled with animal naming and such. Jon and I offered to pull Mom's whiskers out for her, but she wouldn't hear of it. I got home at 4:40, which was plenty good enough for me! (well, I wanted to be home an hour before, but it didn't happen)

No "me" time! / Randal, Cindy, Chrystal, and Dogwood

Mom called to say that we'd be having lunch with Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie tomorrow since Jon wants to see them. Dammit, I had been looking forward to some "me" time! Oh well, maybe Tuesday... no, I can't just let it go! She said that Jon and Harmony have a baby exercise class, so I told her that it was important! Apparently, we're meeting them at Dogwood and driving them around again because they might get lost / not like driving, so I can already tell I'll get shoved into the middle seat. *sigh*

Randal emailed me to say he'd come on Saturday ("I'm free then, but I'll charge a fee for my servies thereafter"), and Cindy said that she was actually babysitting. I called Chrystal to see whether she was free that night, and she said that she could come after Awana, so that sounds good too.

Copa Café, Uncle Michael, Aunt Leslie, and DRACULA

Mom and Dad were late picking me up, but we were on our way to Dogwood pretty soon. Apparently, the Terry Fox run is next week, so I should tell white Eric in case I ever decide to go to church. Mom thinks I should, but we'll see - I can make my own decisions. After feeding Grandma some chicken congee and special tea, Mom found out that Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie had gotten lost! Grandma seemed to have a good appetite, anyway. Of COURSE Mom made me sit in the middle... sigh. Turns out we went to Copa Café for lunch, and Mom was surprised that I'd been there before! I let Aunt Leslie hold hands with me while walking to the restaurant... Mom let me order a mango bubble tea since it was only $2 with a meal (normally $4.50), haha.

They talked in Chinese about what to do around here, Kin's Farm, Yvonne, Lillian, Aaron, Auntie Kwai, Grandma's health, shoes, Wails, and more. I got a ribeye steak with Paris-style sauce; I'd have ordered a steak with black pepper sauce, but I thought Mom was getting that. She got some other noodle dish instead! Oh well. Aunt Leslie ended up being "sneaky" and paying for the meal, and also gave Mom a LAI-SEE envelope for baby Ayler: Mom was polite and said NO to everything (especially since she apparently told them that SHE'D pay for the meal), but it was already done! Got home to do some editing and posting, heh. I should call Chinese Eric soon in case I join everyone for dinner tomorrow, haha. Also decided I was done with ontd_pucking ... OFF-TOPIC STUFF RULES! thehockeypool FOREVER!

Mom, upon hearing a news story about a kiddy Transylvania movie: "What kind of name is DRACULA?! Why would you have that name?!" My explanations that Dracula is a CHARACTER in a KIDDY movie fell on deaf ears. AIYA!

Horses in castles! / 17 notifications! / Uncle Michael

I called Eric to see if he was going to the BBQ; surprisingly, he said he wasn't, even though HE sent out the Evite! Odd... he said he was doing something. Hmm! Later, Mom called to say that she had actually talked to Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie, and they're okay with each other - astonishing! (I have my doubts, of course) Turns out they called Mom and Dad when they got in yesterday, and said that Yee Poh had given Grandma some money to spend. That's nice of her, though! Maybe we can have lunch or dinner with them tomorrow. Also told Mom about what Steph had said about Big G and Havarti, so it doesn't matter to me if we go to Kwong Chow instead next week!

EDIT: Apparently, nobody can make it to lunch with Uncle Michael and Aunt Leslie tomorrow except me. Oh yay, another family thing! It'll make for something to tell my rock, after all. ;)

And now I got an unexpected YM message - DAMMIT!

"You think having a horse will get you in to see the king?" OF COURSE, Reidock soldier!

THIS is why I had 17 notifications after an hour of gaming yesterday... DAMN YOU, JAMES!

A&W Chubby Chicken / Greaseballs / KFC / Microphones

Went to visit Grandma and pick up the pants which Mom said she'd shortened - two pairs, which is fine. Tried them later, and they were the right length, anyway... PHEW! I wheeled Grandma closer to the big-screen TV so she could actually see the classic movie of the afternoon, and she wanted to know whether I was hungry so I could get stuff to eat from there. No, I definitely wasn't! I told her that Uncle Michael would come tomorrow, but she didn't say much to that beyond "Oh, we can talk then..." On the way home, I decided to pick up some A&W Chubby Chicken from the mall food court. I've never had it before due to a long-ago conversation (in 2000?) with Dennis, who described it as "feeling like greaseballs in the stomach," but it seems okay to me for what it is. Then I plan to have taro ice cream... or maybe the Peanut Butter Burst one! SO UNHEALTHY, HAHAHA.

When I got home, Vanessa got on MSN and said she was bored; I'm not the "online bowling" type of person, though! I still haven't found my microphone... it's been ages since I talked to Kenny on Skype, so that's why I don't remember where I put it! Probably near the stuff on the floor, however! While we talked about KFC / McDonalds / Church's Fried Chicken, I found out that Photobucket works again - GLORY, HALLELUJAH! I told Mom NOT to get into a loud argument with her brother in the middle of the nursing home, haha. We'll see what happens...

PEACEFUL dinners, trades in the MIDDLE of games, SLB, Pho, and passports

Took transit to meet Steph and Lisa for dinner at Peaceful Restaurant, right off the Canada Line... I had to laugh at James' bad timing when he thought he could catch me before I went out, hahaha! Of course I brought Grandma's Chinese New Year / birthday cards, too! We had siu long bao, Shanghai noodles, hot and sour soup, culture, beef rolls, and Beijing Zhang noodles.... YUM! Talked about surprise that I'd come out tonight, Chinese New Year dinner, Michael Cammalleri being traded to the Flames in the MIDDLE of tonight's Habs / Bruins game, his "We prepare for our games like losers. We play like losers. So it's no wonder why we lose" remarks, Dad lecturing Steph about Eric having no cash for Pho on Sunday ("he's one of the family so we'll treat him!"), and my intentions regarding Eric Ho.

We also conversed about telling the cute boys at the next table to order beef rolls and SLB themselves, Jon and Harmony changing their phone number (?!), work, Steph unsuccessfully avoiding the hardcore religious Uncle Hansel and Auntie Cathy at church ("where have you BEEN worshipping?!"), Blackberry phones, passports, Eddie / Eunice, and more. Got good bus timing on the way home, so it totally worked for me... also heard that the Canucks had a 3-2 overtime victory over the Blues! Good times!

Shelley and Teunis help as friends! / Struggles

Talked to Teunis about stuff on MSN, which made me feel a little better - yeah, I am sometimes good with boundaries, and sometimes not. (case in point: Jasmine) Also vented to Shelley via FB wall post, and SHE gets the "sleep issue" thing very well! Mike B. and Chrissy deleted their FB accounts, I think...

New duffle bag, jalapeno chips, and dark chocolate brownies

Turns out Mom called me to say Grandma was having a temper tantrum and refused to go out today. Fine by me - more time for games and shopping at London Drugs for the items I want MYSELF instead of Mom's picking it out for me with conditions! UGH! Good thing I didn't bus over to the townhouse, otherwise I'd have wasted more time! I went to London Drugs a bit later to buy pads, on-sale Tim's jalapeno chips, and on-sale dark chocolate brownies. Saw Michael Ho's mom on the bus, too! Then I went to the mall and wasted a lot of time looking at the selection of on-sale knapsacks at Sears, which definitely didn't suit my needs... also encountered a bunch of hyper kids, but it's all good! Went to Bentley's instead to get this Adidas duffle bag; yes, I know they're for exercise essentials, but I can always return the thing if it doesn't work well in practice at church tomorrow! Had a strawberry bubble tea at Big Orange while I was out, hah. Got home and threw a bunch of things away, and also decided to give these red / blue / grey Staples notebooks to the Mak kids.

Facebook feed renamed BITCH?! / Lighthouse Test

The Internet / my router decided not to cooperate from about midnight till 2 AM. UGH! My Facebook news feed was re-titled "bitch" for some reason! Janina, Julie S., Mike B., and Kaitlin thought it was funny, or wanted one themselves. Julie S. said she bought me something funny at the beach - NICE!

Apparently, it's happened to others as well.

Banner and abuse nightmare, vocab compliments, periodic elements, and July 2011 BBT Tally

Mom and Dad got home at 11 last night, and gave me gumballs (wedding favors from Michael and Juliana's banquet) / Nesquik chocolate milk / jalapeno cheese slices. I also got an apricot, a nectarine, two walnut pastries, and a muffin from Grandma. Good thing that she forgot about two towels! At least the parents thanked me for spending all that time with her! She was still up with the (English) TV on since she's afraid of thieves getting in - she figures that they'll be deterred by noise. When her Chinese radio is on, it can be a bit louder than my OWN radio can get... Teunis should count himself lucky, haha! Dad drove me home, and my erstwhile housemate Teunis was at least right about the wireless network connecting automatically when I plugged it back in here from being out!

Why the fuck did I have a nightmare that involved Steve B., Candy B., free coffee, flying low over buildings with a lot of banners hung between them and construction, and my sister counselling a kid who was being secretly abused by his dad?! WHAT THE HELL, SUBCONSCIOUS?! Now I'm just having the muffin for breakfast while catching up! Two people on ONTD (whitegirlthin and nicolesnitchie) complimented me on my lexicon when I used the word "perforce" in reference to using Mom's desktop instead of the wireless connection at the townhouse, hahaha. Jon (who's playing piano) and Harmony called just now to wake me up - yeah, I'm awake, people! Harmony called me an ug, so I said that she's also an ug since she's MARRIED to one! CRAZY!

Bad Baby Names, Part 13: Fellow Collectors

Part 13: Fellow Collectors

I get lots and lots of emails from people with one or two weird names they've seen or heard, but rarely do I meet another person who collects them like other people collect stamps or baseball cards. I think we should start a club, and demand caconomenology - the study of ugly names - be recognized as a serious hobby, if not an Olympic sport.

Which brings us to Lauren. Lauren's a college student from Tennessee who has joined the fight against silly baby names. Ever since she worked in the baby department at Old Navy, she has been cataloging bad baby names in a Bad Name of the Day email.

Her hunting grounds are even more unfortunate than mine - while I tend toward online bulletin boards, where pregnant ladies fish for ideas and maybe, MAYBE can be dissuaded, Lauren scours birth announcements and yearbooks, meaning the kids ALREADY have been saddled with these names and there's no turning back.

After seeing the copious lists she's got compiled, I just HAD to give her her own page. (She's also asked me to plug her Web site, where she addresses another vital issue of cluelessness: the mullet.)

I've tried to sort them by type of insanity, but some of them just plain defy explanation. I've left most joke-free, because sometimes, especially with a list this long and horrifying, it's hard to say something funnier than the name itself.

(Yup, I've gotten so busy - or lazy, take your pick - I'm collecting names AND jokes from readers. Sad, really.)

Bad Baby Names, Part I: Brought to You by the Letter Y

Part I: Brought to You by the Letter Y

My 3 year old's name is Charles d'Artagnan. (after the musketeer) The odd thing is that d'Artagnan (the real one)'s real name was Charles, and we did not know that when we named him, it just turned out that way. We call him d'Artagnan, too. I think this is a fun name.

Yeah. His real name. I'd love to hear the 3-year-old pronounce it, too.

I like Brendan. and for a girl - Egwene.

Called Egg-ween or "Ewwie" for the rest of her life.

Brooklyn Makenzie or Alexia for a girl, and Hunter Gage, Justus Brice, or Darian for a boy and...
The name Jaden for a girl or boy

Child grows up to become character in Danielle Steele novel.

I'm having a girl...

For the first name, I like Mercedes, Michaela, Marissa, Madison, and Makenzie.
For a middle name, I like Alezae'(Alize) like the liquor.

Nothing like being named after a cheap mass market spritzer to define your personality.

,
We aren't having kids for another year or two, but we
like Kellyna Nychole, Taryn Mykah, and Mykenzie Kathryn for girls.

This woman was indicted under the Flagrant Over-Use of the Letters K and Y Act of 1983.

I've suggested to my sister that she name her little girl to be - Manchester. She's not sure about it, but she's considering. What do you think?

Clever. Like being named Pittsburg or Schenectady. Kid'll grow up to be beaten to death by Liverpool fans.

I once met a lady named Rodana. I think she runs a successful Internet business.

In her spare time, she destroys Tokyo.

Brayden,Makynzi,or Karsyn

Tyler, Preston,or Mason

Makynzi: Name or vanity license plate? Type of blade or rogue Japanese crime outifit?

I like the name Aynslie for a girl and Beckley for a boy.

Weren't they the leaders of the snooty frat in Animal House?

I like the name Tegwin for my third child. My two children have uncommon names that are easy to pronounce and spell. I am compelled to use something original... ideas???

Yes. Jump off a bridge. Your kid sounds like an elfin creature in a Tolkien book.

This is for my niece, Dawn. She is expecting a baby girl in September. I suggested that they name her Dusk. What does everyone think?

I think her granddaughter Nighttime would not approve. Or her grand-neices Afterhours and Graveyardshift.

So far we have come up with;

Boys: Finn, Drake, Regan, Hazen, Tannith

Girls: Mehina, Miette, Acenzion, Reina, Sarika, Taise.

Ooh! Anagrams! I want my family tree to look like a Jumble game from the back of the Sunday Sports section. Extr;a credit for u'se of sem'colons. Wait a minute.... Semicolynn!

Does anyone have any suggestions? We are all up for exotic names. We especially like Japanese names, but have yet to find any that strike us.

There's always Rodana.

I was thinking of naming my son Toolio. Does anyone know the origin on that one?

---[Jane] DeSac

Toolio DeSac. Boy, can't think of any way that kid'll get picked on. That's one taunt-proof name there!

Beaufort Michael.

It's French for "handsome and strong."

Especially works if he's an after-dinner port. I'm naming my kid Voiturenez. It's French for "Automobile nose."

I'm thinking about naming my baby "Zannia Amari Smith," but whenever I tell people other than my family, they just look at me and say "that's different."

I guess people are put off by weird names like Smith.

Andreana Calida [last name]

Damita Nicole [last name]

Adoncia Noella [last name]

Kamaria May [last name]

Elliot Ness [last name]

In order: An earthquake fault, a cheesy snack chip, a giant snake, a fried octopus appetizer, and an untouchable are not things to name your child after.

How about Shellsea?... It's like Chelsea, but softer. A nice middle name with it would be Summer.

Shellsea Summer...

Oh, I love that Cat Stevens song!

And now, the Random Letter Family. When we last left the Random Letters, they were trying to name their twin girls, probably produced through Evil Science Somehow Involving Oprah.

Jayln Marie

Ammie Lynne

Kesleigh Abigail

Cydnee Elizabeth

McKayla Mercy

Yes. Please. Mercy.

Brinley Grace

Rebekah Lynne

Ashlee Hope

Makenna Faith

Mackenzie Susan

Susan? Couldn't it at least be Soosynn?

Nikola Kate

Quinn Allyse
(or Elise)

Madaline Sarai (not Sara)

Kaitlyne Nicole

Tayler Emmaleigh

Quinn Allyse, Medycyn Womyn!

Savannah Jaclyn(we really like that one)

Skylar Jane

Jothan Riley
(Joe-than)

Jothan Musk, for a man or a woman

McKaty Alyson

Blayre Michelle

Scarlette Brooke

Blayre, rhymes with Larry. Scarlette: a small Scarl.

For a girl Tierrainney Mackanzie [last name]

for a boy Tristin Gabrielle Reese [last name]

Oh yeah. Every boy wants Gabrielle as a middle name. And that girl's name could use a few more syllables. Hell, if you're going to give your kid a cool super-villain name like Tyranny, spell it right!

I named my daughter Madyson Caite and I regret doing that because every little girl in the last 3 or 4 years has been named Madison. Everyone compliments it, but I still hate it. I would rather call her Caite (Kate), but am not sure. Please, everyone, pick something normal for your child. If you choose something different and unique, please don't keep following the trends of Madisons and Mackenzies and Taylors and Destinys. This is getting old.

Oh, you think it's getting old? I'm sure little Madyson isn't going to find it old... nooooo. Hindsight's a bitch, ain't it?

....and finally:

DAKOTA BEAR for a boy.

Only if your last name's Rabinowitz.

Michael, Amanda, and pooping (dream) / Losing / Amy Winehouse dead / CELLO!

I had a dream about Michael, Amanda, and pooping - I don't think I even WANT to know! Eric popped up on MSN to say that I had to lose first in order to win; NO, I AM NOT GOING TO JEREMY'S! I also just heard that Amy Winehouse has joined the "27 Club"... sad drug news! :(

SIX DAYS TO GO FOR ME AND TEUNIS, so I shall find crazy versions of FINAL COUNTDOWN... I found a cello / orchestra one for today!

The Most Hated Baby Names in America

Thanks to Cat (catmcroy), I present this article to you:

There is no scientific study on the most-hated names, but these results, culled from hundreds of online message board postings by Baby Name Wizard blogger Laura Wattenberg, suggest that people have very strong opinions about what makes a good name.

Here are the least-liked names for both girls and boys:

Girls:

Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backward and one of the most divisive names around, according to Wattenberg.)
Destiny (People dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, Wattenberg said — and many associated this name with exotic dancers.)
Madison
Mackenzie
McKenna
Addison (An example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike, Wattenberg said)
Gertrude (People said this name is "ugly.")
Kaitlyn (For its "made-up" spelling.)
Makayla
Bertha
Hope

Boys:

Jayden
Brayden
Aiden
Kaden (These rhyming names struck many as overdone, Wattenberg reported.)
Hunter (Too much like a last name or "too violent.")
Hayden
Bentley (People dislike brand-name names, Wattenberg found, calling them "trashy")
Tristan
Michael (Too boring, according to some.)
Jackson
