I just found out that my Our Place friend Charlie died on his 57th birthday (8/23) in Greenville, Texas. Mike F. found the obituary online. He hadn't been in good health for a few years, but we still cared. I'll miss him! :(


Ack! It's a flying bed, and the party is being greeted by John's ghost! (after climbing the Wall of Destiny near Clear Vale to obtain the Fragment of Courage)




I had an epic LONG battle with endless Graboopi and Troll enemies; it lasted more than 90 minutes! (the Goopi and Graboopi monsters can call for help a LOT) End result: 33,377 experience points and 13,703 gold pieces! :D

I watched a show called URBAN LEGENDS which featured the story of a couple who found out that they were really brother and sister. Maura's dad and John's mom had had a brief fling, and their children unwittingly got together, feeling that they'd known each other for years. The show said they were still together (having had at least one child), and were looking to move to Sweden - it's the only country in the world where it's legal to marry your sibling!

Went out to Oakridge (taking Dad's jacket - yesterday, I took his sandals) to see if I could get a duffle bag since things were up to 70% off on clearance at Zellers. I didn't, but I did get three red storage bins at LESS than Teunis paid for the three green ones last year - HA! The clerk thought they were separate, but I picked up the thing used to bundle them since that had snapped off: from $20.86 to $10.36! Then I decided to go to Richmond Centre again, this time to ask the Bentley's people about duffle bags. They had a REALLY HUGE one for $19.99 (London Drugs sold them for $10 more), but I didn't need that. Eventually, I settled on a less sizeable one from TRACKER ($44.99 to $24.99) which had small wheels, even though I wasn't in the market for wheels originally. I guess they'll help if I'm concerned about heaviness!

I left satisfied, and was going to go home for a brief while so I could drop off my purchases and get my oven mitts since I can't find any around the townhouse kitchen. However, my key got stuck in the front door lock! I called the manager Hester from the front door, and was surprised (but not really) when her husband tried blaming ME for it! "You used the wrong key, so you caused the sticky door!" [not true] Then Hester told me, "That's not our problem, because you're an old tenant - not a new tenant." WHAT THE FUCK?! Ugh... when I finally got someone to take my key out of the lock before the management came, I thanked her very much! Luckily, she was still there when Hester's husband came to check out the issue, as she could translate into Mandarin or whatever dialect. IT'S NOT MY FAULT, AMACON!

When I finally was able to get into my apartment, I noticed seven missed calls: one was from Vanessa, of all the people. Hmm! I organized the purchases, cleared my phone, and decided to take a shower as long as I was home. Figured I need to get more shampoo and conditioner (as well as a farewell card for Phil / Grace / Micah), so I'll take care of that on Wednesday. Waited for a while at the bus stop, and called Chrystal when I got in. I'm good with paying for my own meal this time: it's on Wednesday night at the usual time and place! (What'll I do between banking and 6:30? Hang out at the mall with too much money temptation?!) Also called Eric to advise him that I wouldn't be going hiking tomorrow since I would DIE; even if he says it's more of a walk and I won't DIE, I'm still not going. Then I said that I'd still be here on Sunday, and I'd been told by two or three separate people to go to the damn meeting. He wondered if I were in the Russia mafia once I said that my parents were there... definitely not! I joked that I was at the townhouse to steal all their stuff, hahaha. At least I don't have to go anywhere till Sunday!

Went with Barry to the Ministry, but NO DICE there. Got home to check my email - Eunice and Eddie got my wedding RSVP, and sent me a link (useless to me) for driving directions. I replied to Mandy's email about the personal things which have been going on around here lately, and composed a draft for later use. Also called Chrystal and gave her a very brief recap on the past couple of weeks (Vegas / personal issues); we're getting together for dinner on Tuesday night so we can talk more about stuff without my feeling bad about interrupting her workday, even if Andrew is a good supervisor and normally doesn't really care about such things! Decided to try No$GBA again since the VBA slowness is REALLY bad! Erin C. and John S. from Puckheads added me to FB at the same time - meh, I'm up for it! Eric M. called to see whether I was going tonight - since I miss venting / ranting (and OH BOY DO I HAVE STUFF TO VENT ABOUT!), I decided to go.

Finished the Salisbury Steak microwaveable meal, my almond milk, and all the remaining dumplings before they would have been ruined by the scheduled power outage on Tuesday even though I really do have a diminished appetite... I ROCK! Had to throw out the almost-finished butter, as I don't want to eat sandwiches right now. Also, Visual Boy Advance seems to be working WAY better today than yesterday, where it was getting really slow every two minutes of gaming... YES! I've been exchanging messages with John S. today, who offered his support due to recent events; that really does help, and I thanked him for it. Chelsea S. and Joshua A. added me from the Puckheads today, too.

P.S. If you don't want me, then I sure as hell don't want you right now. Too much hurt, pain, and drama.

I really like the name Giovanni for a girl, but it means John in English. We have not decided on a middle name yet, but are thinking about Page (my grandmother's maiden name), Sun (which means cheerful and calm), or Rose. (which my husband really likes)

The boy name that we have chosen is Dawson Alexander. What do you all think?

And another A+ for multicultural research. I just did a web search for "Giovanni baby name girl," and immediately got the feminine versions: Gianina and Giovanna.

Meanwhile, I think it's time to say a few words about gushing about a name's "meaning." Some meanings originate because the name evolved from real words (usually in a foreign language). And so their meanings are somewhat interesting.

And then some names have arbitrary meanings that for all I can tell were pulled out of a dead monkey's ass. For example, check out my good buddies the Kabalarians, who have insightful (cough) "meanings" for classy names like Beer and Toilet. I love the Kabalarians, because every one of their name analyses reads even more vague and general than the astrology listings in the newspaper.

And then some names don't have secret "meanings" because they are (dum dum DUM!) ALREADY WORDS. Sure, it'd be one hell of an irony if the name Sun meant "ugly fat pockmarked bastard," but I think it's a fair guess in English it means ... um ... wait, give me a second ... oh yeah, "sun." As in the giant ball of warmth and light that makes life possible for trees and flowers and baby bunnies and such.

Well, it looks like someone missed this Spring's traditional showing of The Ten Commandments, probably because they were watching Sense & Sensibility again. But missed the scene where it's made clear Willoughby is the dashing cad's last name. Oh, and that Willoughby's a total bastard.

With more girls getting boys' names, and more boys getting wuss names, I'm thinking we're moving toward a society where men and women will be equal: a bunch of dainty nancies. It's names like Willoughby that give "Gay Mafia" conspiracy theorists food for thought.

I am a new mother, just found out I was pregnant a couple of days ago, and my boyfriend has already thought of names, and I just wanted to see what other people thought about them. Tequila AnJanette and Angel Jade or Matthew Dillian.

I am the owner of a website that makes fun of bad baby names, and I've been at this for about a year and I really like run-on sentences that make me sound like I'm 14, and perhaps live in mid-Appalachia like in eastern Kentucky maybe, or western West Virginia, and have been on a meth jag for seven or eight days and haven't slept, and the walls are melting and sometimes the carpet starts talking to me and tells me to name my kids after the booze that helped conceive them, or maybe ugly trinkets like my mom collects from QVC.

(i) concerned? (j) wouldn't that be awful. (k) So it's all about you now? (l) So she's five, and you haven't taught her to write her name? Yep, I think now's the time to shut the barn door.

Other comments: (b) strikes me as a good idea. (d) gets half-credit because she's actually right, but doesn't put her foot down. (g) is entirely correct. Damn you, irony!

... I didn't want to name my children the same name as everyone else. I am proud that my children are individuals, and they are very proud of their names. Most people say, "I love that! What name book did you get that name from?" My kids' names are: Wesson, Colt, Nika and Axel.

... and they're especially proud to be named after consumer goods!

My name is Diana. When I was in 5th grade, the Michael Jackson song Dirty Diana came out. Oh, but I was never teased because 10-year-olds aren't smart enough to come up with taunts that involve "banana" or "Guyana." (Phew!)

*If* someone is actually Siouan, they would identify themselves as Oglala, Hunkpapa, Sicangu, Nakota, Dakota, Lakota, etc., not "Sioux." If the name is a word from the Lakota language, it is not "American Indian." There is NO "American Indian" language.

How many of you would think 'Pahli,' 'Sicamna,' or 'Sica' were pretty and unusual "American Indian" names? Know what they mean? Mucous, Stink, and Ugly.

Do what you must, but leave the Dakota and Lakota Nations out of it, along with all other American Indian Nations. Find some other culture to co-opt.

My daughter has polosistic ovaries, and tried for eight years to have a baby. She had in-vitro done twice, and was artificially inseminated several times. Nothing worked after spending thousands of dollars. She stopped all the fertility treatments after eight years, and three months later, she was pregnant. Her grandfather's name was Jesse, and her husband's name is Jesse. Her dad's name is John, and her only brother's name is Derek. After this miracle happened, she wanted to name her son after the most important men in her life. So on June 25th, she turned 32, and June 26th she gave birth to a 9lb5oz "Jesse Jon-Derek [last name]".

One of our "requirements" for a name is that the first and middle initials will sound nice together to make a nickname. I grew up as Brandy to some, and BJ to others .... quick and easy nickname that kids may not make as much fun of.

For 15 years, poor Brandy never understood why everyone snickered after calling her by her nickname. Or why all those football players asked her to prom. They were so rough in the back of the limo.

And here it is again. There's nothing wrong with giving kids Irish names except they sound like fringe characters from Mists of Avalon. But it's another thing to name your kid Ireland. That's a political statement. (you don't see a lot of Arab kids named Israel, for example) But if there's one thing you don't want to do, it's piss off the Oirish by misspelling the name of their damn country. That'll get your ass handed to you faster than asking, "What's so wrong with Thatcher?"

As soon as I got up, I took a shower to assert my bathroom supremacy. After that, I called Henry to see if he were able to make it this week: he's very sorry, but his sister Teresa started a new job on Saturdays. They've been trying to find a nanny to look after Gwyneth and Evelyn for the past couple of months, but so far the ads in the paper hasn't been working, so he's had to fill in the gap - totally understandable! I told him that I could call Ada, and I'd see him around sometime! Once I did call Ada, her husband John answered the phone; yes, they can pick me up!

Teunis told me that gaming was cancelled because some kid has lice - EW! Thank goodness, although he now wants to get together with Kaili (of course) and Jordan. Well, as long as that helps... certainly better than gaming, that's for sure! Kaili apparently always wants to break Alicia's brain with jokes abut her and Jordan dating, which will never happen as he never will date anyone. Called Steph to see what she was doing - she was at Master Hong's with the lards; that's HER deal, not mine! Cindy sent us an email with some TMI health problems and other stuff which I didn't need to know... thank goodness I wasn't eating at the time, haha!


Edit as of 2:42 - Ada's not feeling too well, so I guess I'm staying home again. Yay for a summer break that's extended by three weeks!

Word origin for the weekend of May 14-15, 2011: Brooklyn-style pizza - New Yorkers know that a good piece of pizza can be easily folded over and eaten like a pocket sandwich, a process that usually involves a stream of grease running down one's forearm, a very small price to pay indeed. Outside New York, this is called "Brooklyn-style pizza," even though the earliest pizzerias were found not in Brooklyn but in Manhattan's Little Italy section. Brooklyn, incidentally, takes its name from the town of Breukelen in Holland.

Word origin for May 16, 2011: ozone - First isolated in 1840 by Christian Friedrich Schönbein (1799-1868), a German chemist, "ozone" is a form of oxygen. Schönbein came up with the name from the Greek verb ozein, meaning "to stink," because of the acrid smell associated with the gas. The Texas town of Ozona takes its name from nearby fields of natural gas that give off a similarly sharp smell.

Word origin for May 17, 2011: deadpan - In the argot of the theatre world, pan makes "face." A "dead pan," therefore, is a face that shows no emotion or expression, perfect for suggesting stoicism or (in comedy) incomprehension. Critics have coined the term "deadpan violence" to describe the emotionless killings that have characterized films by the likes of John Woo and Quentin Tarantino.

Word origin for May 18, 2011: chutney - In Hindi, chatna or chatni refers to a spicy, often hot condiment made of fruit / peppers / other ingredients that was traditionally used to mask the flavor of meat that was beginning to spoil. The British colonizers of India liked the concoction so much that they began to consume it at home as well as abroad, leading to the establishment of the Major Grey's Chutney factory in Mumbai, at one time the world's largest exporter.

Word origin for May 19, 2011: Oregon - The origin of the name for the American state of "Oregon" is disputed. Some sources claim that it comes from the Algonquin word wauregan ("beautiful"), others that it comes from the Chinook jargon word for an oily smelt that was highly prized as a trade item and abundant in the waters of "Oregon." Still others link it to the French pronunciation of the Carib Indian word hurucan, which gives us our "hurricane" and well describes the state's often stormy coast.

Word origin for May 20, 2011: macedonia - In French cuisine, a macédoine (rendered in English in that form or as macedonia) is a mixed-fruit salad, sometimes served with cream or ice cream. The name is fanciful, borrowed from the former Greek and Yugoslav province in the Balkans, which is famously a mix of many ethnicities. Originally the French term was a metaphor for a mixed-up jumble, and then it was later applied to food.

I reminded Teunis of the dinners taking place this week - he says this works for his scheduling; I don't want to know about that! Also discussed Jethro Tull, Committee Meeting conflicts with JACK BAUER and hockey (he finds that hilarious?!), the Music Animation Machine, not being able to have stuff, and more prior to his leaving earlier than me for a change - wow! I was pretty much ready when John called at 3:30, haha. On the way there, the boys were playing a game involving "earthquake mode," purple fireballs, attacks, teleportation, farts, and more. When we got to church, I helped Chrystal and Golden with dues while offering them chocolate. I said hi to Jordan, Midora, Antony (he has a real iPhone - unlike his siblings!), Winston, Rosenda, Julie C. (who offered me some pastel M&Ms), Margaret, and others. When I asked Joshua whether he liked his new baby sister Emma, he nodded - then I asked if she cried a lot; he shook his head and hid from me behind his dad Tim. (it was also nice to see his mom Maxine)

Auntie Vivian said that Auntie Rebecca was worried about year-end awards, but graciously left me out of the future post-Awana meeting to figure these things out since she assumed that I had to go home with my ride. This is actually true, since I don't know how I'd get home otherwise, and it also helps if there's something on like a hockey game! Then she said that there was watermelon in the kitchen if I wanted some after club, so I went in there and offered people my chocolate eggs. Mike LOVED the Lindt chocolate eggs and took some (as did Mary and others), and Stanley was VERY impressed that I'd received Mega Smarties in the mail. "You got SMARTIES in the mail?! I would LOVE to get those in the mail!" On the way home, the boys mostly played their game again; when they brought up shields and such, I said that I knew someone who actually does have swords / shields / axes / hammers / maces. I saw Ian's jaw DROP, hahaha! Then he thought that my friend actually was a dwarf (possibly because the dwarfs in SNOW WHITE carry axes to work), so I said that Jordan M. was a real man; I've met him twice now! Then we talked about my POO cards (which I can't find now), weird records, extreme Guinness records, civet cat coffee, and more.

After I got home, I decided to see whether I could find the Lindt eggs at the nearby London Drugs; they were totally out, but I was unwilling to waste my trip out. I got orange anti-bacterial detergent (it smells nice!) and two kinds of on-sale Easter eggs. There was way too much of a lineup at Shoppers Drug Mart; after checking the hand soap prices at both places, I figured that the Bath & Body Works offer of five for $20 is a reasonable buy! Then I decided to go to the huge London Drugs near Broadway Station, but also came up empty; I especially didn't want to waste the trip out there! I got Lays Honey Mustard / Cheddar and Sour Cream chips, two kinds of gum in the 60-count containers, and 100-count orange Tic-Tacs. I was glad I had the gum on my way home since my breath needed freshening - nothing works for me as well as gum does! When I got home, I put some Mega Smarties in a Ziploc bag for Stanley tomorrow, and a bunch of Lindt chocolate eggs in another Ziploc bag for Mike tomorrow.

Then I heard the DOUBLE overtime... it turned out the Predators got a goal with 67 seconds left in the game (OUCH), and ultimately got the winning goal. SO DISAPPOINTING! This was the longest game in Predators history, and the third-longest game in Canucks history. (the longest would be the quintuple OT playoff marathon in 2007 against the Dallas Stars; we won that one 5-4) I also got SLB scheduling emails from Steph; since she has Whitecaps tickets for 8 that night, she'd like it to be earlier, but knows that might be difficult for working types with more conventional schedules. According to Nathan, 5-5:30 works for him; it certainly works for me and Teunis! If Nate picks us up AND does it early enough, we can stop by London Drugs so he can take a picture of that model which reminds me of his girlfriend Ciel's pictures! Eric just tried to call me, but got no answer. I then got a series of MSN messages from him: "your phone is ringing - I need to do sound tomorrow, and we'll leave your place at 8:45 - this is NOT a joke!" Also, Mark Moreau wanted to add me to Facebook because of the Canucks fan page; at least he ASKED, so I'm more amenable to adding him!

Omgigi sent me a message about her paper on ONTD; sweet! Then Eric called half an hour early to say he was leaving NOW - if I didn't have those caramel Cadbury eggs for the BS group, I wouldn't go! Of course, redrum also had to start... UGH!

I ate some of the leftover potato pancakes because I could, haha. Henry picked me up at the usual time, and we talked for a bit about finding a job / his break / the nice weather before settling down to listen to music. At church, we were slightly late, but that was okay. I said hi to Chrystal and Golden (doing some origami cranes) - helped Auntie Vivian with some candy canes, Mott's Fruitsations, and Rice Krispie Squares. Chrystal isn't doing anything for Emily's wedding (which is probably better for her), and really appreciated the bag of extra candy! Mike K. said that Sean L. was talking more understandably now; this IS good, because he wouldn't have been doing this a few years ago with his condition! Talked to Ian, John, Victor C., and Winston about the stuff in the Awana store; the Tootsie Pop lollipops were turning everyone's tongues and teeth different colors, and Ian's actually matched his blue fleece jacket! For once, Harrison wasn't being a total snot, and showed me his green tongue! Saw Maxine (looking really pregnant) and Joshua, so said hi to them as well.

Told Mary to stop teasing Victor L. - it's okay if I put a friendly arm around him, haha! Henry was playfighting with Julie, who told me to poke him; he said I shouldn't because he drives me - I'm not fazed at ALL by that, hahaha! Amos said that the Tootsie Roll lollipops had chocolate in them, and that he was allergic to it - his mom Jennifer had treats in her bag for him just because of this sort of thing coming up! I was talking to Jordan and Thomas about hockey and badges when I had to leave. On the way home, Sean and Ian were discussing their Spring Break Mexican cruise / the world's most expensive chocolate / Indians ("they live in the hot!") / Inuits and how they get around and what they eat / bananas / the world's biggest lollipop / the world's tallest man... good times! When I got home, I noticed some instruments on the bed when they weren't here before - I don't want to know what that's about, unless Teunis was in while I was out. Who knows... now, more solitude awaits!
