JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI / Sleeping in!

Eric picked me up, and we were at Dylan's shortly; he saw Randal in front of us, and pointed this out. I had no idea about that! There were a lot of people over; I talked to Connie, Wesley, Vicky, Raymond, Jon, Karen, Lincoln, baby Declan, Dylan, Deb, Cindy, Randal, and Geoffrey about Grandma updates, toys, alone time, the sushi documentary (JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHI - he's 88 years old and still works every day!), Facebook, Ayler, the dinner last Sunday which I didn't hear about till the next day, old potato salad, beer, chicken, chips, the baby wanting glasses or pants, fans, and more. It was getting pretty warm, yeah. On the way home, Eric said that his family is visiting Kieran in the States for at least a couple of days, so he probably won't be going to church on Sunday. I exulted at the chance to sleep in, and he said I could call my parents (whom I've seen too much of in recent days) / Sam / Ivan. NOPE! Discovered that I'd missed a call at 7:30 from Chinese Eric - DAMMIT! I WAS AFRAID OF THIS.

Grandma NO FILTER / Dawn and Eni's wedding

Managed to renew most of my library books before going out to Dawn and Eni's wedding and banquet. Somehow, I needed to survive the afternoon and evening with my parents, and also needed to survive tomorrow! The thought of next Saturday kept me going! Mom told me that she had Princess Cruises chocolates for me, along with some instant noodles. "You should boil them in water first to get rid of the wax!" This time, I didn't even bother telling her that it was an urban legend. They're not the most healthy thing to eat, I know, but that doesn't mean the wax thing is TRUE! (she also had no idea how to pronounce "Eni," or where Albania was!)

We discussed Vegas and who might look after Big G, who at least knew she was on her way to a wedding. It wasn't until later when Steph told her that it was Dawn's wedding that she clued in! She kept offering us something to eat - maybe she was hungry - but I told Steph that she'd offered me cookies while a funeral was actually going on once! (even if I'd wanted to eat them, I JUST WOULDN'T!) Again, she has NO FILTER! She asked Steph how long Pastor Bob was going to talk for, and opined that they (ministers) said the same thing every time! My poor sister was trying to shush her! During the prayer, she told Steph to move her purse and program because someone might take them!

Saw Benedict, Jen, Karen Lew, Vania, Uncle Reuben, Auntie Christine, Vivian, Uncle Timothy, Auntie Lillian, Auntie Catherine, Uncle Y.C., Uncle Hansel, Auntie Cathy, Lawrence, Andrew T., Uncle Cho-Kai, Auntie Anna, Linda Yan, Jenny, and others at the wedding at UBC. Jon talked to Dawn's parents Uncle Albert and Auntie Betty, but I figured I could do that later. I expected some religious content, as Dawn's parents still go to church. Not sure how personally religious Dawn is at this point, but it doesn't matter to me. My parents think that she can work on Eni, which I don't think will help if he dislikes it. I'm not saying there can't be religious conversions or whatever, but it's none of our business! Jon decided to clown around with his tie, and put it around his head for Steph to take a picture. The actual wedding ceremony was pretty good, and PASTOR BOB officiated?! (for some reason - Eric says "declining vision," and I say "only met the guy THREE TIMES!" - I couldn't recognize him at first) I guess it makes sense since he was pastoring in Hong Kong for a number of years. The ug told me about the Whip last week; I'd heard about it, and it seemed to go well. I liked Eni's mom's name, which is a variant spelling of Tatiana. :D

Later, Pastor Bob said it was good to see me there; I assume Jon had finished explaining our connection to Dawn's family since I'm sure he doesn't know that, and Dad came up to bug us jokingly about something. We asked Pastor Bob if he could see a resemblance, and he said yes. Later, we waited outside for some free coffee; I got green tea, and Grandma settled for hot water since there wasn't any hot chocolate. It was good just talking to people afterwards; Geoffrey is so tall now, haha. He says he misses Canada a lot, but will have to stay in Hong Kong for a few years yet! Said hi to Dawn's parents, who did come here from Hong Kong too.

The family decided to go to Granville Island later since it was near the restaurant for dinner. (Steph drove us there since she wasn't going to dinner; I told her that I'd forgotten Lisa's chocolate, but there was no room in Steph's clutch purse for it anyway) Had saffron and pecan bread from a bakery (interesting yellow coloring inside!), ate mango ice cream, and got some cooked sausage; I'll have mine for breakfast tomorrow, I guess! A bird pooped on Harmony's jacket, so she and Dad were cleaning it up! At Dockside, I found a use for Harmony's notebook... writing tag prompts! I saw Auntie Teresa, who said hi to me - since I don't have anything to say to her, I didn't say anything beyond a curt "hi."

Jon, Harmony, Lincoln, Karen Lew, and I spent time talking about housing / Eric Ho / Holly / Richmond / Joyce Station / minimalism in baby stuff / red wine / Mom's alcohol tolerance / upcoming weddings / Myles (Whistler as a wedding venue?!) / Sean C. / Uncle Keith the real estate guy / life updates / Emily Carr / pregnancy / RCMP / Citrus / Richmond / Joyce working for Facebook briefly. Megan and Andy came by with their 20-month-old son Joshua, who liked looking around at things. We said hi to him, although he was shy... understandable! Dinner was chowder or salad; steak, chicken, or vegetarian; coffee, tea, and tiramisu. We laughed at Uncle Albert's speech, but Auntie Betty really brought the religious points home when she spoke! Oh well, at least the speeches (the others weren't Bible-based!) weren't interminably long! Saw Ivan and Karen Choo later; Karen said she DID get my email and meant to respond with a White Spot lunch invite to celebrate our birthdays, but got swamped with work. She says maybe mid-April would work for her; we'll see! I'll have to tell Randal about this tomorrow if I see him, haha. Everyone laughed when Eni said he was looking forward to getting to know Dawn better, hehe.

Afterwards, my parents decided to go to Shoppers Drug Mart. (Mom was frustrated that Grandma kept telling everyone that she'd just gotten back from Hong Kong, and threatened to pack her off to Hong Kong to live with Uncle Michael instead if she wanted to go there so badly!) I was tasked with staying in the car so Grandma wouldn't wander off. She asked me three times in ten minutes what took them so long, asked whether "White Kid" (white Eric) had a girlfriend yet, and told me that she recognized "E," "R," and "S" from the Shoppers Drug Mart. (she was VERY SURPRISED when I told her that particular store location never closed!) She also told me that she knows the English letters for "Shoppers Drug Mart" and "London Drugs" are different, even though she doesn't know what they say! Maybe Lisa is right, and Big G is playing us all for a bunch of fools when she says she doesn't know English! Dad let me return my library books which couldn't be renewed anymore - well, I have one which I haven't finished, but nobody else has requested it.

At home, Eric called me when I'd just gotten in the door; I heard the "beep" and figured I'd catch him online instead! Of course, I had to restart the computer first after I caught up on things. It was then that I got an unexpected offliner from someone, which was nice, but NOT as nice as the news that Vancouver had a 3-2 OT win over Colorado! As I thought, Eric got back to me online to say that I was going to "flip-flop" about going to church. (and bug me about 54-40's SINCE WHEN, and my vision) I have to go tomorrow, though; I won't get a ride to the baby shower from someone if I don't, and I won't get a ride to the Italian food dinner from Steph if I don't go to the shower! Thank goodness the baby shower provides me with an excuse to get out of a thank-you lunch at Tsui Woo! Every time I type "baby shower," I want to type "bridal shower" - WTF, brain?! I also reminded Steph that maybe she should get something for Jane; I just got her a dollar store photo frame in a very small gift bag, but that's just me and my budget!

Decided that my new Fred Mayer purse was perfect for Richmond Sushi, haha. I met Wayne in the yellow Jeep; on the way over, I entertained them with my crazy stories about Mom (Vanessa asked about those conversation snippets!) when we weren't talking about hockey / directions / jerseys / Canucks #1 / the Maple Leafs. Met their friends Wayne (yes, another one) and Jan - I'd met Jan before at the Buck and Ear in April 2009! We discussed Dutch stuff, Scottish stuff, the "squid tentacles / testicles" story, the "libido" story, the past, weird made-up expressions, horses, shrimp bombs, kimchi, tofu, chicken teriyaki (rolls), tuna sushi, sashimi, local sleazy dumps like the Ivanhoe and anything on Hastings, army stuff, navy stuff, and the Marines. Christon let us into Jeremy's place, and Eric said that I was pretty sharp since I recognized his voice - haha, that's what happens when you see someone a lot! Met a few of Jon's friends (talked to them about Toronto / Vancouver / black people / chicken knees / chicken feet) while Eric and I settled on the couch.

Eric got me some water, and we had a good time just listening to people! I said hi to Connie, Wesley, Harmony, Holly, Peter (who wasn't surprised to hear Steph was working), Eric M., Jeremy, Mark, Christon, Trish, and others. After I asked Mark how church was today, he said that the new interim pastor gave a sermon today. He mentioned that the guy is also white, which led Raymond to wonder if we'd had any other white pastors. I answered that Pastor Glen had been white, but that was before his time. Randal then said that he'd come to the church right after all that, and wondered why Pastor Glen had been dismissed. I gave them some details about the petitioners and everything else, and then Randal said that he couldn't believe we've known each other for almost eight years! Yeah, it's been a long time - half of which I've spent judging him!

When Randal said hi to me as we were eating dinner (I guess I didn't mind his sitting next to me on the couch since it was crowded...), that started off a long-overdue conversation about books / the past, his past anger, the non-Christian Ginger ultimately being shallow [she got married and her statuses are about Louis Vuitton handbags!] even if she was creeped out by my morbid joke (they broke up soon afterward), Korey's manipulative nature (he doesn't read his status updates), Karen Choo being a good mentor (helping us both through issues) and Ivan Choo. We also talked about Dylan and Karen not getting along (you THINK?!) / Steph and her life / pumpkin ale / meeting people / Vegas / grudges / overanalysis / Bible Study memories. He guarantees that he'll accept a friend request from me on Facebook, so we'll see about that. Then again, he says that I saved him from a hideous marriage! Hahaha, nice!

Randal also mentioned that he saw some potential between me and Teunis for a romantic relationship - not with certain things going on, that's for sure! All I mentioned was the chewing and noise issues, which he thought we could have compromised on. I don't think so! (I should tell him this tomorrow, hahaha) When he said that we didn't talk enough, I was surprised! Then he implied that if I kept loving Teunis and inviting him out to church, he might be a Christian - I don't think so! I accept that he has a great respect for Christianity in general, and that's fine by me! I didn't say that I didn't like his way of thinking, haha! However, I do feel much better now... but I'll still be careful, of course! (he said he feels bad about how we ended off last time in 2007, so we'll see)

When H. Ross came in, we gave each other a high-five! Everyone was congratulating Harmony on her pregnancy, heh. I talked to Christon about the small group formats and such, and had to laugh on the inside when he asked me whether the stuff happening on Fridays around here was resolved yet! I don't think it will be, hahaha. The guys were talking about Youtube videos, the hockey score (Vancouver won 2-1 over Ottawa in overtime), BC Lions news / the Grey Cup, vuvuzelas, STARCRAFT, hockey pools, message boards, and more prior to Gino and Quan dropping by with balot. GROSS STUFF, man! Then Paul took over the computer to look up anime, so BOO! I smiled and said hi to Jon H. while Eric and I were leaving, too! On the way home, we discussed a Grey Cup hangout / his assessment of Paul being cocky (that's actually right!) / help / touch / the election results / appointments / cold weather / hanging out / seeing people only occasionally being good (for sure!) / Nathan coming back at the end of the month / Ciel / more stuff. Pretty good friends, yay!

Eric got on MSN this afternoon to ask if I'd changed my mind about Illuminate tonight; nope! I did take the opportunity to ask if he was going on Sunday to Jon's thing at Jeremy's, and figured he'd be out all day what with the football game / Alistair and all. Good thing I have my ways, hahaha. He said he could ask Ivan for me about Sunday if I'd like, but my plan is to sleep in, man! I have given up on MOTHER 3 since the ocean is too challenging without infinite air! LUFIA AND THE RUINS OF LORE just crashed on me, too!

When Eric picked me up for church this morning, he commented that I was unusually chipper for the morning, so I said that I'd banned someone already. We discussed that, journals, Ivan, my "long" receipts as proof that I spent thirty thousand dollars, rides, turn signals, cruising, germs, the West Final CFL game next week, karma, voting, Alistair getting tickets, Christon's emails about dinner, Christmas plans, Geoffrey's address, Bible Study, my blue toque, Paul shitting on my hospitality, and my standing up to people. Also talked about the Grey Cup game being in BC, Pastor Tom's last Sunday, glaring at people, his doing SOUND at Illuminate on Friday (a praise and worship service?!), snacks, Daniel Fellowship, my being "drunk," Christmas tunes, DARKWING DUCK / Dave Wong, exes, grudges, the emulator crashing (I swear I'll have to use Vizzed to play MOTHER 3), and more. When I got into church, I told Randal that he looked warm with his scarf, so he said that my toque looked just as warm. Um, yeah? That's kinda what it was designed for... why I even talked to him, I have NO idea.

I talked to Nina and Gerard about Awana, yesterday's shopping, Christmas plans, our weeks, brandy beans, Timothy Fellowship, and more. While that was going on, I saw Paul talking to Mr. Creep - YIKES! Then I was a sneaky ninja and gave the bag of Maynard's Swedish Berries to David Ho - HE could give it to Hien for me, haha! (she thanked me later, even though she'd told me to KEEP THEM!) I said hi to Nathan W. before settling down in a pew, which I actually got all to myself today. After service, I talked to Jeremy about work, Eric's mustache, and a possible Jon birthday dinner - he had to check his calendar, heh. Saw Jordan and Thomas eating sugar cubes because of the tingle - of course it's going to be sweet, kids! Discussed stuff with Andrew before going upstairs: SNES games, emulators (which I've now linked him to), TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, and more. Said hi to Stella and baby Ava, Tim, Jon C. (who's getting baptized next week), Mike K., Sonya, Stanford, Calla, Frances, Micah, Isaac, and others. Margaret tapped Amasiah on the shoulder, and she thought it was me - nope!

Saw Jessie, Rachel's grandma, Anastasia and her dad Danny, Mattias, James, Ramen, Shira, Ashley, Alexis, and a new ten-month-old baby at Toddler Sunday School. James climbed into my lap and wanted me to read a DORA THE EXPLORER book to him... okay, I was up for that briefly! I talked to Mattias about tow trucks, to Shira about coloring, to Ashley about toys, to Alexis about silver balloons, and to the new baby (referring to her as "baby") about toy eggs and such. She seemed to have fun, and cried when her grandma put her in the stroller. I guess I am good with kids to a certain extent!

Went downstairs to wait for Eric (who was listening to Stanley's guitar playing), and talked to Grandma briefly before Auntie Anna came to pick her up. I just let her think that Jon had left already, haha. Vivian hadn't seen Eric when I asked her - DAMN! (also talked to Auntie Catherine briefly) When we finally got going, we talked about forgiveness / toxic people / tact / microwaving instant noodles on Friday at church (I WILL STAY HOME!) / spending time with people / Mr. Creep / naming people. Got home and called Steph briefly, then talked to Jon a little longer about stuff. Now I can game in peace!

Staying home is the best option if I'd be forced to be out all day otherwise!

Some stupid random person named Bill Jewett wanted me to add them to Facebook - I DON'T THINK SO! I tried calling Chinese Eric, but he wasn't available. Later, white Eric said on MSN that he'd be out all day with church, a worship meeting, and the Dine-In with the college people. Dylan and Deb were at Phyllis and Martin's wedding, but I didn't want to call them because I'd told Maxine that I wouldn't attend Deb's baby shower after all. Staying home sounded like the best option by FAR!

Eric thought that I would attend the dinner if Paul weren't there; this was the first I've heard of THAT! We discussed calling Ivan (no), ignoring Paul, the end times and the last Bible Study, bad singing, "YES!" seeming like I was excited, swearing, "heroes," forgiveness, letting him know about things, Sechelt, telepathy, senses, and more. Then Vanessa got on MSN to say that she wanted some more of the bread from Granville Island. We talked about her upcoming vacation, appointments, Wayne, her being really bored, special treatment, health issues, walking vs. busing, Libya, ships, meetings, and more. I'm not going to let certain people know that I forgive them in case they think the behavior is okay to repeat in future!

ZIPLOC BAGS SHOULD BE ZIPPED!

I discovered that Paul had stupidly left the Ziploc bag of chocolate UNZIPPED - who does that?! Now I have no more chocolate! He got back after 6, and at least gave the spare keys back to me. Then he wanted to borrow a USB port and the phone; fine, as long as you don't use my phone to call long-distance! I talked to Teunis about Mr. Creep (he agrees with me) and Thursday arrangements - I prefer his picking me up later, haha! Dylan called soon after to say he'd be picking us up; since I wanted to be by myself (but couldn't), I just contented myself with VERY short answers to anything Paul said, haha.

Dinner itself was pretty good - Dylan and Deb didn't need to apologize for stuff from the Richmond Public Market, that was for sure! (I didn't like the eggplant, but tofu / beef / short ribs were all good) Learned a lot about Paul's past (gangs / jail / exes / kids / almost dying a few times) and his future (too much religious talk / bad grammar for my taste), social workers, and discussed THEIR wrong opinions on homosexuals (even Jon got mad when he referred to them as "faggots") and God wanting them to be saved - I just kept my mouth shut for much of that! Also discussed electricity / Palestine / Irish / babies / parenting / "allergic to dust" / cleanliness / SERVANTS / Jon / durian / rambutan / lychee / longan / Amy / Ivan / JOB and PROVERBS and THE MESSAGE / Eugene Peterson. Good thing I don't have to be worried about leaving Paul alone in the apartment on Thursday, since he apparently has other plans in North Vancouver... PHEW! The phone ringing will serve as his alarm tomorrow, HA! (hopefully, not mine!)

Along with reports of bad baby names (almost always from distressed teachers or concerned sisters-in-law), my email is filled with reports of people who gave their kids a name that was fine... until it was combined with their last name, resulting in comedy.

Granted, they aren't bad baby names, but definitely keep with the tradition of "should have known better."

Some have seeped into the realm of urban legend. Sometimes the stories behind the spottings are wrong or can't be proven, but each and every name has nevertheless been confirmed real.

Last name: Warner. Baby boy's first name: Luke. (Not Lucas.) And in keeping with always choosing a "Tibetan" middle name for their children: Skye. Luke Skye Warner. When I asked, they swore they had never even SEEN any of the Star Wars movies. Yeah, right.

Hi, I have a couple of names for you. The first one was the brother of a friend of mine in high school. Their last name was Tush. (pronounced Tuhsh) His name was Harry, but if someone didn't know how to pronounce their last name, it would end up being pronounced like that of someone with a hairy backside.

The other names were a brother and sister I once met. His name was Braxton Splan (sounds like a good German dish), and her name was Elspeth Splan. Poor kid was going to spit on people all of her life whenver she introduced herself. ;)

Harry Tush (a different Harry Tush, mind you) is credited with co-writing the song Oh! You La! La! (with Lew Brown and Ed Moran) in 1918. I am dying to find the lyrics, just to know what the heck the title means.

While looking for Elspeth Splan, the first item I found was for traditional Scottish harpist Elspeth Smellie. She's available for concerts and events in the Scottish borders region. (She played when the Dalai Lama visited Scotland! That is about the coolest mixing of cultures I can think of!)

Anyways I am not sure if this counts, but my best friend's little brother is named Harry Cox III. The thing that impresses me the most, he isn't Harry Cox the 1st, Little Harry Cox Junior, he is Harry Cox the THIRD! His name is like an urban legend around here. Whenever I mention my friend's little brother, they all say "You actually KNOW Harry Cox???" Like it is like knowing Santa Claus.

Somewhere a few months ago, I got an email about a guy on an HGTV program named Timber Dick. Soon afterwards on my first, pop-up heavy bulletin board, intrepid reader Bob gave us the lowdown on Timber Dick, and I followed up with some research.

Timber Dick has a brother-in-law named Dick Swett, who has served as a Congressman from New Hampshire as well as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark. Each married a daughter of Tom Lantos, who represented California's 12th District in the U.S. House of Representatives for 27 years, before passing away in Feb. 2008. Lantos, who was profiled in the Oscar-winning film The Last Days, escaped from a Nazi labor camp as a teenager, and joined the Hungarian underground - he was the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress. Between his two daughters and their respective Dicks, he had 17 grandchildren. I voted for him twice.

And there's even more political connections - Dick's mother, Nancy, was Colorado's first female lieutenant governor.

Sadly, Timber Dick passed away in April '08 from burns he sustained in a car crash.

Update!: Not one, but two of Timber Dick's kids have contacted me saying yep, he's real, and a great dad. Turns out he and his brother-in-law were roommates, and both families have a penchant for unconventional names. Included in their combined clans are Keaton, Levi, Chanteclaire, Tomicah, Charity, Kismet, Atticus, Kimber, Zenith, Sunday, and Sunny.

I'm a prosecutor. I had a defendant on my caseload named Harry Beaver. As if that isn't bad enough... he was the 4th generation of Harry Beavers. Evil parents, I tell you... naming your child Harry Beaver IV. It's just not right.

I found at least 49 Harold Beavers listed in the phone book in the U.S. And before you even ask, there are at least 190 Mike Hunts in the U.S., including at least one in Beaverton, OR; 32 Mike Hocks; and two guys named Mike Rotch.

I was calling in our town to ask people to sign a petition. One of the names on my list was "Mr. Odor." Not wanting to offend, I asked if I could speak to Mr. Oh-dor (trying to stress the "oh"). He said, "No, it's "odor" like a smell." I told him I could understand his having to explain, my maiden name was Herford, which is a type of cow. He told me, "That's nothing. My first name is Ivan!" Ivan Odor. How mean was that?

By the way, my great-grandmother's name was Clara Herford, and my grandmother is Isabelle Herford. I was dating a guy with the last name of Mazure, but becoming a Herford-Mazure would have put me over the edge. I'd been mooed at enough!!

I both confirmed Ivan Odor AND confirmed he lives near enough Angie for me to believe her story. (Aren't White Pages wonderful?)

A teacher friend of mine always brings up her favourite: a lovely little girl from South Asia, who will likely be changing her name, or entering a post-traumatic stress disorder clinic, from all the teasing she'll get in about grade 5 or so.

I don't know this firsthand, but I know several people who claimed they went to school (all of them lived in the same area) with a girl named Edith Mycock. Some of them didn't learn much in school, but they never forgot that name.

Confirmed! It's probably not the same one, but I found an Edith Mycock in Britain. She's in charge of accomodations at Lower Berkamsytch Farm, Bottom House (quit laughing!) near Leek (I mean it!) in England's Peak District. The farm has cottages for rent if you feel like staying on a (and I quote) "small stock rearing farm" which, being a city person, I assume means they raise baby sheep and teach them to drive in NASCAR rallies.

Or maybe Edith Mycock is just what they tell snide Yank tourist city wankers like myself.
