Gin and tonic, slow descents into alcoholism, exotic meats like alligator and kangaroo

When my brother picked me up this morning, he said that he'd called Nathan three minutes before he got to my place (since Nate had a guitar for him), and woke him up... good thing he called! Apparently, Nathan was like "Oh crap!" Heh, understandable... our parents are coming home tonight at 1:30 AM, and Jon hopes they call first! Listened to the Arcade Fire, and one of the tracks was called Funeral: nice choice for going to church with! (Jon had seen a fire just off the Knight St. Bridge yesterday morning at 8:30 when going to worship practice, too!) We discussed Jasmine (Eric's met her once and I didn't meet her off the SDMB.. just LJ), the New Pornographers after switching CDs (Jen's current obsession is Neko Case), and how Dad probably thinks he's a big pervert because of that / a Ween CD cover / a Rolling Stone magazine cover featuring a girl in the shower or something. Then we got into how Erin SWORE she'd never miss / be late for a Sunday service again after the time Ivan proposed to Karen mid-service... uh, we don't think it's going to happen again! (especially if Ivan had to apologize the week afterward!)

When we got to church, I'd opened the car door in preparation for getting out... then Jeremy came by with his family and handed me a bag from the liquor store. I gave it to Jon, since it contained gin and tonic for tonight! We waited for the Chinese morning service to thin out before going in, and Jon told me / Chris / Jeremy that he and I been listening to a track called My Slow Descent Into Alcoholism when Jeremy had handed us the gin and tonic: we thought that was pretty funny, hahaha. I sat with Jeremy's family, and talked to Anthony for a bit: he says Benny called him from Toronto (where he's visiting family) and says he got a cheap (but spacious) apartment in Montreal already. That's good news, indeed! He himself is pretty busy with school since he started earlier than everyone else (three tests and a midterm already?!), but he makes time for church: that is definitely an important priority! Also talked to Calla for a bit: she'll be done in eight months of co-op work and school, so that'll be cool too.

After service, I talked to Phil for a bit: he misses Grace, of course... and isn't quite sure whether he'll be able to make it tonight. I thanked Erin for her early birthday card, and she told me that my sister wasn't supposed to give it to me till my actual birthday! Heck, Steph was afraid she'd forget, mmkay?! (haha) Then I told Eric that Jasmine would probably be coming tonight to the dinner. He asked me who'd invited her: who do you THINK, buddy?! :P Then he asked if she'd be bringing any crazy characters with her, so I told him that I certainly hoped NOT since his living room can only fit so many people at once! (10-12?) After ascertaining that Andrea and Chuck were still up for lunch (Vivian was 50-50 on dinner while Danielle's not going at all), we said bye to Doug and then made plans.

I went to the toddler Sunday School to help, as usual. Little Conor seemed to like me, as he stayed near me a lot of the time. Amanda was giving all sorts of toys to Sean, who examined them and dumped them on the floor... good times! After I was done, I went outside to talk to whoever was around. (I just hope Mike didn't bring all his technology on the Mexico trip!) Jen, Eric, and I eventually piled into Andrea and Chuck's car for the short trip to Commercial Drive where we met my brother: the last time Jen and Jon were there, nothing was really open since it was the World Cup! We settled on a place called Stormin' Norman's Spirit Grill: it started out on Wreck Beach and has all sorts of exotic meats from a special supplier! (alligator, venison, buffalo, kangaroo, muskox, wild boar, elk, etc.) No Thai food for lunch, since that's what we're going to have for dinner!

Billy and Stella arrived later with their baby Benjamin, and Dallas arrived just before 2:30 or so because he'd been busing all over! That guy finished his burger pretty quickly, let me tell you! We talked about Billy and Stella's family cruise: baby Benjamin's a good traveler, and all these old ladies and young girls wanted to hold him! They went to Disney World too, and loved the rides and such! Also discussed the summer, the Elbow Room (Amy went there once and she was so shy that she didn't know what to do about the deliberately-rude waiters / waitresses!), how Dallas and Jon met (they joked about a serenade in the setting sun at Wreck Beach leading to true love, hahahaha), Chuck and Jon's plans in the fall, what was going on tonight, school, Jamie Oliver ginger beer, Thai curry, Kieran perhaps joining us, Alistair being in Toronto, sibling order (Stella and Jen are both the youngest in four-kid families by FAR... 11 or 12 years separating the oldest from the youngest?!), motherhood with a six-month-old baby, Billy's pharmacies, Mexico, Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale / Red Dust Devil / Stella Artois / Sun God Blonde drinks, and more.

Eric thought that the toddlers would run amok if I weren't there to watch over them: nice to know he has such confidence in me, but I dunno, haha. We all were entranced by Benjamin's funny expressions and what he would do: he was playing with Andrea's cell phone at one point, and looked like he wanted some beer or water! (no beer for YOU, little dude!) When the bill came, we all made use of Eric's tip calculator on his cell phone: handy little feature, for sure! (we all shook hands and said goodbye to Chuck on the way out since he's leaving on Tuesday) On the way home, I threatened my brother with the ultimate price if he used me as his personal drum set / chest-chopped me. He dropped me off after promising to do SOME work on his three papers and take-home test: he hopes he can email them in, but will see how it goes if he has to physically go to Regent tomorrow and hand them in!

At home, Phil asked me for the link to the "Citrus Lemon Episode." Since I'm on top of these things, I accordingly linked him... he thanked me, and I said it wasn't a problem. Then I tried calling Chinese Eric: thank goodness he got online a while later because that didn't work! We've made plans since Jon's arriving at 7:30 ("just for the food!"), and I should be fine for a ride home if he has to go home at 9-ish. On to more good times later! (although I'm not sure what's with his latest online habit of typing "hoho... se ya latez ina bit...") It's a good thing dinner probably won't start till 7:30 or 8 since I'm still full from lunch!
