21 steamers for 9 people... Shanghai Wind, baby!
Note: Life in an LJ parallel universe nearby / the LJ friend that's out to kill me / the crackhead authors my LJ friends correspond with blogquizzes. (by Christine, Luke, and Yoshi)
Siu long bao in a steamer, so you know what I'm talking about:
Pictures of this madcap night to come later, I'm sure! We took a whole bunch of weird pictures, and called Nathan our guru, haha. Steph joked that Ceci and Angela had to stock up on good SLB tonight before their next visit here from Toronto in a couple of years! Nathan said that Shanghai River's SLB totally sucked, but that something else (I forget what) was really good. (that's another restaurant near enough to Shanghai Wind) We all exclaimed in dismay whenever someone pierced a dumpling and let the soup out: I was guilty of letting it squirt in a contained area once, and having everyone look at me in concern, haha.
Brian (on his inaugural SLB outing), Danielle, Jeremy, Eric, Nathan, Steph, Ceci, Angela, and I smashed the old record of 13 steamers for 8 people quite handily tonight: we ended up ordering 21 steamers for 9 people, although it was a struggle to finish them! (ongoing tallies here) Since there are six to a steamer, we consumed 126 of them! (Vivian's not included in our number since she doesn't eat pork... but we also ordered Shanghai noodles, tan tan noodles [spicy peanut sauce!], and vegetables!) The total bill was $118.80, and we didn't have ANY money problems putting down a total of $130! (that's pretty rare!)
Jeremy came all dressed up in a suit and tie from work, so we joked that he was paying the SLB proper respect before he ate them. Nathan made this thing of kissing the SLB before he ate them, and made Jeremy kiss the last one that he ate too! Steph said that Erin couldn't make it because of her pharmacy exam, and that Eunice (and Eddie) couldn't make it because of her coloring exam tomorrow! When she said this, Danielle thought she meant coloring with crayons... all was made clear when Steph reminded her that Eunice was in hairdressing school. (so it's a HAIR coloring exam, heh)
Steph finally understood the Edmonton / law connection among Brian, Danielle, and Eric: Danielle comes from Edmonton (or close enough), Brian's studying law at the University of Alberta (which is in Edmonton or close enough), and Danielle's last name IS Law! Eric's thrown in there since he was born in Edmonton and moved here when he was about four. Then our family got to know his family about a year later, when he and Jon were in the same kindergarten class. (Steph explained this to Vivian, Ceci, and Angela while she was "airing out" her Heatley hockey jersey in front of us: it's okay, since Eric's like family and doesn't care!)
Speaking of airing out, we all laughed when Jeremy went outside for some fresh air... and then laughed some more as Eric went to do the same thing (taking off a layer in the process) and came back in to Nathan thinking he'd changed his pants in the parking lot! (uh, no... that wouldn't be very good! :P) When he went to do that, Jeremy took his seat for a while and explained to me that it was hard work sitting on stools to eat: I agree! A few of us wondered why we wore JEANS to the SLB event... they definitely don't expand much, if at all! (that's why I'm wearing a nightgown now...)
We talked about Jeremy's new job next week and the adjustments he'll have to make in terms of travel time and eating, tan tan noodles, the improved flakier deep fried green onion pancakes, the giant SLB that Nathan had in Shanghai (you sucked the juice out with a straw and cut up the pork later), the long while it had been since the last SLB time (either September 21 or Christmas Eve of last year, depending on when you went), Eddie's blasphemy, and how we could REALLY do a number on the "21" record if Jon were here. Speaking of Jon, we also discussed how late he'd be to a lot of things: that's just classic Jon. There was the time when he made Danielle wait an hour while he was doing something else on the way to lunch at a certain time... I heard about that one later on! Then there was the time he was 45 minutes late to the Christmas Eve SLB lunch... Steph called him 15 minutes into waiting for him, and he was still at home! (I heard about that later on in the day!)
Someone brought up ladies' night at the Estea Beverage Club (a place for bubble tea and desserts), and I told Steph I'd check my journals to see when it was. (I called her when I got home anyhow to tell her that I wasn't going to Summer Conference most likely: her suspicions of "Thursday night" were confirmed) We talked about the menu there: SLB are called "Juicy Pork Buns," so we joked around about juicy pork bun bubble tea and pork jelly instead of coconut jelly. (that would be gross!) Speaking of the menu, I told Jeremy that I'd have to email him the hilarious menu translations found in China and Shanghai: Eric remembered those, all right! Then someone brought up the one-litre bubble tea place: no, we were NOT going there right after Shanghai Wind! (I usually get yin-yang there: half milk coffee and half milk tea) Since there was a Pho place near Shanghai Wind, Nathan and Jeremy joked about ordering an extra-large Pho bowl right after eating SLB... yeah right!
We saw this huge bowl of raw pork after we'd ordered 15 steamers: they were ready for us! Nathan said that the waitresses were making funny comments about us ordering so many steamers, and it was true that ours gave us a funny look when Ceci placed the initial order of 10! When it came time to take the "steamer tower" picture, we were so transfixed on the SLB that we didn't notice they'd taken an empty steamer away! Jeremy decided to get a shot of the full restaurant, and Steph joked that her wedding banquet would be held there. ("all the wedding gifts will be from Dollar Max next door, haha!")
We talked about "prime temperature" of the SLB, the steam bath provided by the dumplings, clearing out of the pores, and intoxication by pork. Steph tried convincing Jeremy to eat one last SLB by pretending that it was talking to him: "Jeremy... EAT ME! You know you want to..." Eric thought that there was another term for that other than "personification," so turned to me as the "word expert." I couldn't think of it at all... oh well. There was a confusing time with the place settings: somehow, we didn't notice an extra one on the table. Nathan declared that he wasn't afraid of my spit since I'd accidentally drank out of two tea cups... ah, we're good friends indeed. :P
Later, we were impressed by Angela's weird vocalizations in the parking lot. It wasn't the Oompa Loompas in the original Willy Wonka, but maybe more like the weird things in Spaceballs. Ah, good times all around: Eric gave me a ride home, and he spent most of it telling me that I should have done what he told me last night over MSN / reminding me of his analogies and World of Warcraft characters. Thanks, dude... I'll get you back on Friday by randomly laughing at you all the way into Vancouver! :P
