The first game in Denver since the sucker-punch incident...

I heard the Chicago White Sox won the World Series yesterday: good for them for wiping away that 88-year-old curse!

Well, tonight was the first Canucks game in Denver since the Todd Bertuzzi incident 19 months ago. There were some fans dressed up in prison gear, and they did boo when #44 came on the ice for his first shift... although they kinda were in the middle of cheering, since their captain Joe Sakic had opened the scoring right before that! *laugh* But generally, their fans were nicer than our Vancouver basketball fans were when Steve Francis came back to our fair city after an orchestrated trade to the Houston Rockets since he didn't want to play for the Grizzlies! (the Vancouver fans threw things like tomatoes at him!) However, Todd Bertuzzi's done his time and the players know that he didn't mean to hurt Steve Moore that badly. Maybe now he can have some closure and focus on being a better hockey player.

Vancouver's power play and general game playing just was not good tonight. Cloutier got yanked after four goals, and Auld was okay when he first went in... but it was all about the other players as well. That's why the score was so bad. I don't think we do so well at the back-to-back games... the last time we had one of those, we got whipped 6-0 by Minnesota! o_O

The Avs definitely put an end to our six-game win streak, and we suffered our second regulation time defeat this season. But in our losing cause, we did set a club record: it's the first time in franchise history that our opponent has NEVER had a shot on goal in a period. (we outshot them 23-0 in the third, and 42-30 overall... David Aebischer played well) The fans got a chance to vociferously boo Todd Bertuzzi throughout the game (and send him off at the end), and see a convincing win by the home team. At least the game wasn't a hostile event like some predicted... it was kinda muted, all in all. The loss wasn't as embarrassing as it could have been, either.

Lots of chances for us in the third period, but only Kesler was able to put one away. For them, Sakic / Konowalchuk / Laperriere / Turgeon (with 2) / Hejduk (his 200th goal) scored. Pat Quinn and others got fined for certain comments they made about the officiating in this new "cleaner" NHL cracking down on hits: lots of special-team actions! Congrats and credit to the Avs and their fans for not being totally smug about it: the blowout game kinda finalizes everything, even if the fans DID boo Bertuzzi every time he came on the ice or touched the puck. Oh, and I still can't get over how much Antti Laaksonen's name sounds like "anti-laxative." :D (speaking of milestone goals scored against us, Sakic scored his 500th and so did Gretzky in an EMPTY NET!)

The three stars were Ian Laperriere, David Aebischer (he stopped 40 shots), and Pierre Turgeon. (if he scores on Saturday, it'll be his 500th goal) Interesting hockey game to listen to, as well... next game is Saturday!
