Nero CD Burning Stuff

Session Start (AlenaBrolxFlami:mrptptpt): Tue Sep 13 15:23:29 2005
[15:24:15] AlenaBrolxFlami: so you say that DVD will take about 9 CDs to burn?
[15:25:37] mrptptpt: what kind of CDs? are you talking normal audio CDs? or just splitting it up into CDs full of the mp3 files? it's 4.5 gigs... CDs hold 700 megs. probably 7 CDs.
[15:25:45] mrptptpt: for MP3s I mean
[15:26:11] mrptptpt: if you're making audio CDs.... uh... a whole spindle of blank discs? :P maybe more?
[15:27:34] AlenaBrolxFlami: I didn't see a need to buy a whole spindle of blank discs just now at the store... but I'm talking about that music DVD you gave me... splitting that up onto a bunch of CDs (with Nathan's help since I don't have a DVD burner thingy :P) and then giving it to my brother, haha
[15:28:17] mrptptpt: yes... that's what I'm talking about too! :P what kind of CDs? just MP3 discs that you'll play on a computer? like that DVD just spread out across multiple discs? 7
[15:28:38] mrptptpt: if you make a normal audio CD, that you'd play in a normal CD player... that'd be a lot of discs :P
[15:31:37] AlenaBrolxFlami: .... I have no idea what I bought...
[15:32:06] mrptptpt: ..... it doesn't matter what you bought :P a blank disc is a blank disc.. you can burn them however you want :P
[15:32:22] AlenaBrolxFlami: let's see... 10-pack CD-R... with 80 minutes and such each... I think maybe I should have gotten the spindles instead?!
[15:33:06] mrptptpt: well, it'll take 7 of those :P
[15:33:49] AlenaBrolxFlami: .... but it says 80 minutes each.. I dunno about you, but the DVD is much longer than 560 minutes...
[15:34:01] mrptptpt: just make Data CDs... the DVD is a data DVD... which means it's just like a big disk with computer files on it. they just happen to be music.
[15:34:54] AlenaBrolxFlami: so can you burn DVDs to CDs using a DVD / CD burner?
[15:34:58] mrptptpt: are you doing this yourself? you'll do all this stuff in your CD burning program. it'll give you the option of a data CD, or a music CD, or a video CD, or whatever.... pick data :P then put files from the DVD onto it until it's full
[15:35:19] mrptptpt: if you have a DVD burner, just make a straight copy to a blank DVD :P
[15:35:32] mrptptpt: yes, you can do that
[15:36:14] AlenaBrolxFlami: no, I'm not... I'd waste the cost of the CD-Rs in trying to burn things :P
[15:36:24] mrptptpt: ok... here's probably the easiest way to do it. go make 7 new folders on your hard drive.. just call them "Disc 1," "Disc 2," etc...
[15:36:38] AlenaBrolxFlami: I'll just need to tell Nathan to pick the DATA CD option....
[15:36:55] mrptptpt: then copy everything from the DVD to your hard drive... sort them into 700 MB chunks in the folders...
[15:37:24] mrptptpt: so then you'd go make a data CD and add everything from the Disc 1 folder... next one, add everything from Disc 2 folder...
[15:39:17] mrptptpt: you can just do it yourself :P it's not hard... you said you had a CD burner, didn't you? I'll help you do it... it's seriously not difficult. if you make a data CD, it'll just ask you to drag files over to it or whatever... so you do that until it's full :P but copy it all to your hard drive... it might be too slow to read straight from the DVD and burn it... you'll need two drives for that anyway, a DVD drive to read the disc, and a CD burner
[15:39:44] mrptptpt: just noticed this: but it says 80 minutes each.. I dunno about you, but the DVD is much longer than 560 minutes...
[15:40:02] mrptptpt: ignore that :P that's only if you're making an AUDIO disc
[15:40:47] mrptptpt: if you want a CD you can stick in a CD player and listen to, you can fit 80 minutes of music... that disc will hold 700 megs of data.. so basically that just means that in normal CD audio format, 80 minutes will take up 700 megs
[15:41:12] mrptptpt: it's actually a little different, but for the sake of keeping it somewhat simple, that's close enough :P
[15:41:55] mrptptpt: with 700 megs you can probably store 7-10+ full albums of MP3s... which will be much more than 80 minutes, yeah.. but you're not dealing with that audio format, so that makes no difference
[15:43:06] mrptptpt: this is also why you should NEVER buy CD-R's labeled as Audio CD-R's.... they're more expensive and they're the SAME THING as any other CD-R :P you can make a data CD or an audio CD or whatever the hell kind of CD you can make with any of them :P that just depends on your burning software and if it supports those formats
[15:44:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: okay then... I think since you have the experience, I'll go with that...
[15:46:35] mrptptpt: so you've got 29 gigs free on your hard drive :P copying the entire contents of the DVD to it will take up 4.5 gigs. and you can even delete it all when we're done if you want :P so it's OKAY TO DO THAT :P just make 7 folders, move stuff to them until it totals 700 megs. don't go over 700... I don't think you'll need to. when you hit 700 megs, add stuff to the next one.. your last disc will only be like half-full, so if one album doesn't fit on the end of one disc, just move the whole thing to the next disc.. I think you'll have room.
[15:47:13] mrptptpt: then once you have all that set, I'll try to tell you how to burn them... it'll be pretty simple if you have them already sorted out like that
[15:51:56] AlenaBrolxFlami: .... okay.... hang on.
[15:54:32] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... wait. I don't have a DVD burner, I don't think...
[16:01:38] mrptptpt: you need a CD burner :P which I thought you said you had
[16:01:45] mrptptpt: you're burning CDs here
[16:02:39] mrptptpt: doesn't matter that the stuff is coming from a DVD.. it's just data files.. it can be on a hard drive, CD, DVD, Floppy Disk, Punchcards... whatever :P it's all the same when you're just dealing with plan old computer data
[16:03:40] mrptptpt: for our purposes here... the DVD is just a CD that holds as much as 7 of the CDs you just bought. same thing otherwise
[16:05:32] AlenaBrolxFlami: okay, let's see... I think I have a CD burner.. otherwise Vernon wouldn't have installed Nero on this thing..
[16:11:57] mrptptpt: you have Nero? good :P I can definitely tell you how to do it with Nero, since that's what I use myself
[16:15:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: so should I just make these folders as new directories or what?
[16:15:13] mrptptpt: yeah
[16:15:39] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... okay, here's hoping I don't screw this up.
[16:17:19] mrptptpt: all you're doing now is copying files.... in fact, you don't even need to copy everything to the hard drive first... just make a Disc 1 directory, and copy files from the DVD until it's full (700 MB being "full")
[16:20:32] AlenaBrolxFlami: hey, I can copy entire directories!
[16:20:57] mrptptpt: of course you can :P
[16:21:27] AlenaBrolxFlami: now.. how to figure out how much stuff is on the folder so I know I'm getting close to 700
[16:22:30] mrptptpt: just copy the first few directories, then look at how big that Disc 1 folder is... copy some more, check... when it's overfull, delete the last one, or just move it over to a Disc 2 directory
Session Close (mrptptpt): Tue Sep 13 16:24:56 2005

Session Start (AlenaBrolxFlami:mrptptpt): Tue Sep 13 16:40:58 2005
[16:41:38] AlenaBrolxFlami: hmm.. Windows Explorer froze, but the directory SEEMS to have copied okay...
[16:43:16] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... although I think I'm better off with not playing it at all while it's doing this....
[16:45:34] mrptptpt: well, try to open some random files from what you copied and see if they work... probably does.... you mean you're trying to listen to the DVD and copy it at the same time? you can do that, but that'll slow it down a lot... CDs / DVDs are too slow to do more than one thing very well... they're fast if you're playing a song or something.. it just reads in a straight line.... if you do two things, it has to move the laser all over the place to get back and forth between the two things.. which it might not be fast enough to do without lagging something up
[16:45:42] mrptptpt: it should work though, just might go slower
[16:48:36] AlenaBrolxFlami: let's see if it does work then.. the songs, I mean...
[16:49:17] mrptptpt: it's probably fine, Windows Explorer was just busy copying and didn't want to do anything else :P
[16:49:50] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah.. but it froze twice... so I figure the radio shall be my music source, haha
[16:50:28] AlenaBrolxFlami: at least, until we get to burning the CDs and such... don't want random music over the CD songs :P
[16:53:48] mrptptpt: you can play MP3s and burn CDs :P this is not like recording a tape
[16:54:18] mrptptpt: if you copy a file to a disk.. a plain old floppy disk, music you're listening to won't be on that disk :P same thing here.
[16:59:17] mrptptpt: you can't listen to the DVD while burning... you have to take it out and put the blank CD in :P unless you have two drives....
[16:59:43] AlenaBrolxFlami: ha, I knew it. :P
[17:02:26] AlenaBrolxFlami: hey, I found a way to figure out how much stuff is in a folder!
[17:02:42] mrptptpt: look at the status bar at the bottom? :P
[17:02:50] AlenaBrolxFlami: right-click folder, and select properties.
[17:03:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: uh.. no such thing here for some reason :P
[17:03:13] mrptptpt: well, turn it on!
[17:03:49] mrptptpt: Windows by default has everything useful turned off and everything totally worthless turned on
[17:03:53] AlenaBrolxFlami: "4 objects, 0 bytes"... yeah, that tells me a lot :P
[17:04:05] mrptptpt: are those objects folders? :P
[17:04:18] AlenaBrolxFlami: yes.
[17:04:25] mrptptpt: then that's right
[17:04:29] mrptptpt: unless there's stuff in them....
[17:05:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: but at least the method I came up with will tell me the folder size, haha
[17:05:08] mrptptpt: if you're looking at the status bar, it won't tell you how big stuff inside other folders is... but the right click -> properties should
[17:05:15] mrptptpt: just turn on the status bar :P
[17:05:23] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, it's on.....
[17:05:25] mrptptpt: View, status bar
[17:05:45] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah, I figured that out already :P
[17:06:04] mrptptpt: it should show the size over on the right side... for some reason, it gives the free disk space next to the number of objects
[17:06:50] mrptptpt: so right now mine says 13 objects (Disk free space: 10.2 GB) then over to the right it says 25.2 MB, which is the size of those 13 objects...
[17:07:02] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh yay... Windows Explorer froze again :P
[17:07:20] mrptptpt: well, actually that won't work since you're copying over whole directories :P
[17:07:32] mrptptpt: probably should just do the right click properties
[17:08:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah... and it unfroze, yay!
[17:08:18] mrptptpt: it's just doing this while copying a bunch of stuff?
[17:08:38] mrptptpt: just leave it alone while it copies... that can be kind of slow coming from a CD / DVD
[17:09:01] AlenaBrolxFlami: yup.. for the fifth time now? oh well...
[17:09:51] mrptptpt: it's just doing that since it's copying stuff and taking a long time.. that's all.. don't worry about it :P
[17:13:12] mrptptpt: and getting them sorted and ready to burn like this should be most of the work... :P
[17:13:25] mrptptpt: after this, we just open Nero and tell it to burn everything in whatever directory
[17:19:34] AlenaBrolxFlami: hahaha... my brother is going to have one CD full of nothing but GWAR.. hahahaha..
[17:30:06] mrptptpt: does the GWAR stuff even fit on one CD?
[17:31:15] AlenaBrolxFlami: no.. that's why I said he'd have one CD full of nothing but GWAR :P
[17:31:44] mrptptpt: so he'll have a couple CDs with GWAR stuff :P
[17:40:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: no, you misunderstand... one CD full of NOTHING BUT GWAR...
[17:41:46] mrptptpt: right.. and another with SOME :P
[17:46:43] AlenaBrolxFlami: actually, two others with some... but what I'm getting at is that there will be one CD with NOTHING BUT GWAR music on it since there's no room for anything else :P
[17:48:15] mrptptpt: I have one like that in my car :P I need to make a new one.. it doesn't have the new album, War Party, on it
[17:58:02] AlenaBrolxFlami: now you understand... :P do it, haha
[18:02:46] AlenaBrolxFlami: Windows Explorer failed to respond for the second time :P
[18:08:15] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... and I bet this OHGR file will totally freeze things up too :P
[18:14:46] AlenaBrolxFlami: ah, as I thought... OHGR doesn't want to copy at all. :|
[18:36:43] mrptptpt: uh... why not?
[18:37:01] mrptptpt: if the disc is scratched up or something, that could screw it up
[18:43:31] AlenaBrolxFlami: well, that MIGHT be it... although I don't think it's scratched up...
[18:45:34] mrptptpt: just one file keeps messing up?
[18:46:04] mrptptpt: that's what that sounds like....
[18:50:43] AlenaBrolxFlami: I think the whole thing is like that...
[18:59:51] mrptptpt: well, it copies by each file, not the folder as a whole...
[19:01:56] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah, I know... but I think maybe the whole thing is messed up..
[19:02:24] mrptptpt: do they play?
[19:07:32] AlenaBrolxFlami: they play, but they do sound kinda messed :P
[19:08:21] mrptptpt: I bet the DVD is scratched or something
[19:08:35] mrptptpt: you might not be able to copy them at all if it's like that
[19:09:12] AlenaBrolxFlami: that is probably the thing, then... but what could have scratched it?
[19:12:50] mrptptpt: I don't know... stuff? :P the dots on the surface of a DVD are TINY... doesn't take a lot to scratch one
[19:17:05] AlenaBrolxFlami: I swear it was like this when I got it in the mail, so who knows what happened to it...
[19:18:25] mrptptpt: just Ohgr?
[19:18:38] mrptptpt: I thought you said just playing it in a different program worked
[19:19:18] AlenaBrolxFlami: that was for In Flames when it exhibited that sort of problem... still sounds scratchy in WMP
[19:19:46] mrptptpt: well what about Winamp?
[19:21:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: sounds scratchiest there..
[19:21:48] mrptptpt: weird
[19:37:43] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah... so what to do?
[19:38:15] mrptptpt: maybe you'll just have to skip those
[19:38:54] mrptptpt: if they won't even copy, something is probably wrong with the disc.. but it's really weird that that would be limited to just those files from that one band
[19:40:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah... that's probably why I mail these kinds of things off in bubble envelopes ;)
[19:40:39] AlenaBrolxFlami: even books get the bubble envelope treatment!
[20:27:56] AlenaBrolxFlami: and what do you know... the Cramps is like that too..
[20:44:54] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... and the Stooges....
[20:44:57] *** Auto-response from mrptptpt: I am currently away from the computer.
[21:13:07] mrptptpt: it makes no sense at all for only certain bands to not work. or all the files of one band to not work
[21:14:00] AlenaBrolxFlami: well, maybe not all the files of those bands don't work, but should I try it?
[21:53:43] mrptptpt: well you can try copying what will copy... it should give an error indicating the exact file that won't work
[22:02:10] AlenaBrolxFlami: watch it freeze Windows Explorer a zillion times over..
[22:08:24] mrptptpt: copy them file by file :P DON'T copy the particular file that's causing it to screw up...
[22:11:06] AlenaBrolxFlami: that's what I'm doing...
[22:23:30] AlenaBrolxFlami: might help if I played them first to see which can possibly be copied..
[22:29:13] AlenaBrolxFlami: yup... all of OhGr is scratchy, and yet I managed to copy two of the songs onto the disc folder... go figure...
[22:31:32] *** "mrptptpt" signed off at Tue Sep 13 22:31:30 2005.
[22:32:25] *** "mrptptpt" signed on at Tue Sep 13 22:32:23 2005.
[22:54:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, never mind... I don't think I'll bother with OhGr / the Cramps / Type O Negative :P
[22:55:35] mrptptpt: but The Cramps and Type O Negative are really cool
[23:00:03] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah, but if they won't go :P
[23:02:24] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, and now Winamp won't play at all :P
[23:02:51] AlenaBrolxFlami: ... never mind.
*massive conversation snip*
[01:31:39] mrptptpt: I'm going to bed :P
[01:35:25] mrptptpt: talk to you later... ask me about burning the CDs tomorrow if you can't figure it out.. Nero has wizards and stuff for burning CDs though..

*another day*

Session Start (AlenaBrolxFlami:mrptptpt): Sun Nov 06 19:52:02 2005
[19:52:15] AlenaBrolxFlami: The New Plague - AIDS?!
[19:54:47] mrptptpt: well, they say AIDS a lot in the song, don't they? :P the booklet for that CD (which is awesome... a fake newspaper about the end of the world.. which was supposed to be Dec. 31, 1999 according to it... from a comet hitting the earth, called Ragnarok, which turned out to just be their enemy Cardinal Syn flying to earth)

anyway.. the booklet has an article about the new plague.. I forget what they call it but it's worse than AIDS, Cancer, and 57 other things combined or something :P
[19:59:39] AlenaBrolxFlami: ..... interesting GWAR backstory, hahaha..
[20:00:22] mrptptpt: I actually saw them live on that night :P they didn't mention anything about that though :( that CD came out in like '95
[20:01:05] AlenaBrolxFlami: darn.. you ought to send me that thing, but my brother already thinks you're anti-social enough as is :P
[20:01:29] mrptptpt: the booklet to that CD is really long too, with all these articles about all the anarchy going on because it's the end of the world and stuff.... it's pretty crazy... unfortunately that's their only album that comes with anything like that
[20:01:48] mrptptpt: anti-social? for listening to music?
[20:03:23] AlenaBrolxFlami: darn, haha
[20:03:29] AlenaBrolxFlami: no.. for listening to GWAR..
[20:04:05] mrptptpt: I'm not seeing how that matches up with anti-social
[20:06:58] AlenaBrolxFlami: me either.. but that's what he said once when we were discussing music and such... which reminds me, Nathan / I still need to get that burning project done maybe kinda-sorta..
[20:18:53] mrptptpt: what project is that?
[20:22:07] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, that thing I was all over you about a couple months ago
[20:22:25] mrptptpt: which was....? I don't remember what you wanted to do
[20:24:21] AlenaBrolxFlami: burn the stuff you got me last Christmas to CDs..
[20:29:03] mrptptpt: didn't you put all that on your hard drive already? just go burn it...
[20:29:23] mrptptpt: open up Nero, tell it you want to make a data CD, add those files, click burn :P
[20:31:52] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah, but I'm being exceedingly lazy here, haha
[20:35:19] mrptptpt: but you're using up hard drive space!!!!
[20:35:31] mrptptpt: oh, my God! your computer will explode if you put anything on the hard drive!
[20:35:40] mrptptpt: you'd better burn the CDs before that happens
[20:35:54] AlenaBrolxFlami: .....
[20:36:04] AlenaBrolxFlami: I am not THAT paranoid!!!
[20:39:27] AlenaBrolxFlami: one of the CDs only has 333 MB worth of stuff on it, though.. it needs at least another 333 MB of stuff on it...
[20:44:48] mrptptpt: doesn't NEED it :P and CDs hold 700 megs... you can put more than 333 on it
[20:49:08] AlenaBrolxFlami: yeah, I know.. but I'm Asian ;)
[20:49:18] AlenaBrolxFlami: you know, use as much space as I can, haha
[20:51:32] mrptptpt: I usually fill up CDs / DVDs too if I can
[20:52:01] mrptptpt: so put some other music on it... rip some of your CDs to mp3 if you don't have any.. you can get programs to do that too
[20:52:24] mrptptpt: you should rip all your CDs to MP3 so you can listen to them on your computer without having to put the discs in :P
[20:55:07] mrptptpt: you don't HAVE to or anything, but it's a lot more convenient that way :P
[20:56:48] AlenaBrolxFlami: I put all my MP3s on the CD already, and it's still only that much, haha
[21:03:11] mrptptpt: so... put some stuff from CDs you have on there
[21:03:57] AlenaBrolxFlami: he's looked through all my CDs and even has a few of them.. so that might not go :P
[21:09:31] mrptptpt: so that means he'll hate you if you put extra stuff on it that he's seen before? :P
[21:10:21] AlenaBrolxFlami: oh, I dunno... I'm sure there's a few songs on there that he's listened to before..
