Big Two domination at Dragon Ball / Bennigan's Hot Bacon Dressing

Note: LJ BlogQuest 1 / Dysfunctional LJ Pet Shop blogquizzes, by Amand Dubois.

Eric, Steph, and I met Jeremy at Dragon Ball at 9:30 (he got there 10 minutes before) after discussing whoopee cushions / cool wrestler masks (bright blue, red, and white) / ponchos (Steph got one for herself too, and chose the nicest-looking ones for us) / Grandma / the weekend's wedding and Wilson / the crazy traffic today / Ivan (NOT Karen's husband, but the teen!) breaking his strict Novice driver rules / Christon buying HUGE boxes of candy for 88¢ each from Wal-Mart / in-jokes on the way over. Heck, why buy salad for $6.99 when you can get huge boxes of candy for that cheap price? No wonder Americans are so fat! Apparently, Steph and the others had to do an intervention in the middle of Wal-Mart since Christon looked ridiculous carrying around these wide packages to stock up for home!

Jeremy asked us what "yogo" was: we had no idea, but it made us think of yogurt! It's probably been on the Dragon Ball menu forever before he just noticed it tonight. So he decided to ask the lady there: her answer of "it's sweet and sour" made him think of sweet and sour pork, haha. He ordered a yogo-starfuit mix to see what that would taste like: Steph wanted to try some, but he warned her that he had a mild cold. (so did she, but she refrained from trying it anyhow) Then Steph asked me whether I was a weredragon or believed in them since it was a full moon (sorta?) out tonight and I was crazy... not as far as I know! As I told Jeremy, I may be a dragon in the Chinese zodiac, but I don't think I have any werewolf in me!

A little later while they were playing Big Two (with 17-card hands because I don't play that game), I declared that I wasn't afraid of Jeremy's cold since I was generally pretty healthy, and tried a bit of his bubble tea. It did indeed taste surprisingly like Orange Julius (the tang? the flavor?), so we joked that the secret ingredients there were starfruit and yogo! (never mind the oranges and banana!) I myself had an Oreo cookie-mango pieces mix, Eric and Steph both had Bartlett pear (Eric's had no sugar / no pearls), and Nathan had a blueberry-watermelon with coconut jelly when he finally got there 40 minutes late. Jeremy and Eric wanted to order something spectacular for Jon, so decided on taro / guillingao / yogo / mango pieces. However, Jeremy mixed that up and apparently ordered taro / mango / yogo instead. I guess the number of questions the lady asked only confused him! While normal people get "Pur no pur? Slus? Meelk?" at the counter, Jon and Jeremy get different additional questions such as "All chunks?!" when THEY order stuff! Jeremy noticed that he forgot to use his card when he ordered, so Steph said I should ask since it's never too late with us! (it was only a few minutes after he ordered) I was going to order anyway, and the lady gave Jeremy three stamps on his card... of course I let Jeremy use the free one in the future! (he had 10 stamps filled out, so that means a free bubble tea in the future)

When Jon, Nathan, and Ivan showed up really late, we bugged them about it. Steph then said that Ivan was the youngest there / at our table. Let's face it... I'm turning 30, Nathan's 26, Jeremy and Jon are turning 25, Eric just turned 25 yesterday, Steph's 23, and here we have Ivan at 17! We then discussed the nutso traffic, French 12 and verb tenses (pluperfect, PASSE COMPOSE, subjunctive, and such... good luck, Ivan!), Resonate songs, what Dallas wanted to do for Sunday's Vietnamese dinner (soursop / durian / fruit drinks), Jeremy's domination of the Big Two, the stickiness of the tables and bubble tea quickly making the cards not feel so new as they did a month ago, and other stuff.

Ivan left early, but we stayed till about 10:30-ish so we didn't accidentally play cards till midnight! (people have to take earlier buses still tomorrow... ugh!) On the way home, Steph noted that the whoopee cushion I gave Eric was really tight and you HAD to sit on it in order for it to emit noise. She also found it amusing that it had to be labelled as a whoopee cushion: hey, ours are labelled as well. They thought I was kinda crazy, but it was cool... I wouldn't fall for the "sit on whoopee cushion" trick when I got in the car, and neither would Eric when he filled up his gas tank! Interesting times, as usual... hey, Melia emailed the Awana crew, and included my request for a ride at the end! Sweet!

Bennigan's Hot Bacon Dressing

Recipe By:
Serving Size: 1 Preparation Time: 0:00
Categories: Dressings, Salads, Meats

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method

2 ounces Bacon grease
1/4 pound Red onion -- dice fine
2 cups Water
1/2 cup Honey
1/2 cup Red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 1/2 tablespoons Cornstarch
1 tablespoon Tabasco

Place the bacon grease in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onions and sauté until the onions start to blacken. While the onions are caramelizing... place the water, honey, and red wine vinegar in a mixing bowl. Using a wire whisk, mix the ingredients well. Add the cornstarch and whisk well. After the onions have caramelized, add the Dijon mustard to the onions and stir together with a rubber spatula. Add the water, vinegar, honey, and cornstarch to the mustard and onions and mix. Continue stirring until mix thickens and comes to a boil. Remove from heat and store in refrigerator until needed. Note: To reheat, use a double boiler. I put the tabasco on the ingredient list if you like it. In different parts of the country, Bennigan's omits this ingredient.
