Booty, bushmeat, and the Butt Report

I'll bring you the approximate second half of the "B" words from this book that Jon and Harmony got me for my birthday. This is from Butt Rot and Bottom Gas: A Glossary of Tragically Misunderstood Words (Eric Groves, Sr.)

bonification: the remission or waiver of a tax, particularly on export goods

booby prize: a fun prize given to the worst player in a silly game

booty: treasure or prizes, usually stolen or illicit ("All politics is a matter of working hard without reward, or with a living wage for a time, in the hope of booty later." - Ernest Hemingway, Old Newsman Writes: A Letter from Cuba)

bottom ash: the non-burning components of coal

bottom gas: a type of breathing gas carried in portable tanks and inhaled by underwater divers

bottomhole contract: a type of oil-drilling contract in which the landowner pays the lessee

bottomry: a type of contract in which a shipowner offers his or her vessel as collateral to obtain a loan to fund an expedition

brain fag: the state that occurs when a person psychologically disrupts his or her bodily functions

brass balls: parts used in the rotor assemblies of helicopters

Brazil nuts: hard-shelled, oily, three-sided nuts that grow in clusters on the Bertholletia excelsa tree, found in South America

breast-deep: up to one's breast, that is, the chest; chest-high

breasthook: a thick piece of wood placed across the stern (rear) of a ship

breastplate: the piece that covers the chest in a suit of armor

brown ball: a brown-colored ball worth four points; used in snooker, a type of billiard game

bugger: a person who secretly installs electronic listening devices

bulb baster: a kitchen utensil that assists with basting, or moistening, meat during cooking

bulge the onion bag: British slang for scoring a goal in soccer (or football, as it's known in Great Britain) [the term "bulge the onion bag" refers to the resemblance between the soccer nets and the net bags in which onions are sold]

bunghole: a hole in a wooden barrel that releases liquid; the hole is plugged with a cork called a bung ["To what base uses we may return, Horatio! Why may not imagination trace the noble dust of Alexander, till he find it stopping a bunghole?" - William Shakespeare, Hamlet]

bunya nut: a variety of nut that grows on the Australian pine tree Araucaria bidwilli

bushel: a dry measure for produce or grain that contains four pecks, or eight gallons, or 32 quarts

bushman: a person (typically a backwoodsman) who dwells in the Australian bush

bushmaster: a large venomous snake found in Central and South America

bushmeat: small animals such as rats and monkeys that are hunted for sustenance in forests and jungles, where larger game animals are not readily available

bushwhack: to ambush or engage in a surprise or guerrilla attack

bustard: any of the large-bodied birds of the family Otididae

butternut: a North American walnut tree, the Juglans cinerea

butt hinge: a hinge partially recessed into a door's edge

butt joint: a joint made by placing two pieces of material end-to-side or end-to-end

butt log: in logging, the largest section of a tree that is sawn off near the tree's stump, or butt

Butt Report: a comprehensive World War II document prepared for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill by his trusted friend D. M. Butt of the British War Cabinet Secretariat that shocked the British government with the revelation that 33 percent of Royal Air Force Bomber Command planes were routinely failing to drop their loads on their designated targets; the information stirred rapid advances in bomb-sight technology as well as improvements in bombing strategies and tactics, all of which contributed to the Allied victory in 1945

buttress: a stone or brick structure built to hold up a wall

butt roast: a cut of meat that comes from a pig's shoulder [A butt roast is typically roasted or barbecued; if barbecued, the butt is often prepared before cooking with a commercially prepared dry-rub mixture of seasonings. Butt rubbing should be done carefully to bring out the meat's maximum flavor.]

butt rot: a fungal disease affecting the butt, or base, of a tree

butt shaft: an arrow with a blunt or unsharpened tip ("Cupid's butt shaft is too hard for Hercules' club, and therefore too much odds for a Spaniard's rapier." - William Shakespeare, Love's Labor's Lost)

butt weld: a weld made by joining together the flat ends of sheet metal
