bottom ash: the non-burning components of coal
bottom gas: a type of breathing gas carried in portable tanks and inhaled by underwater divers
bottomhole contract: a type of oil-drilling contract in which the landowner pays the lessee
bottomry: a type of contract in which a shipowner offers his or her vessel as collateral to obtain a loan to fund an expedition
brain fag: the state that occurs when a person psychologically disrupts his or her bodily functions
brass balls: parts used in the rotor assemblies of helicopters
Brazil nuts: hard-shelled, oily, three-sided nuts that grow in clusters on the Bertholletia excelsa tree, found in South America
breast-deep: up to one's breast, that is, the chest; chest-high
breasthook: a thick piece of wood placed across the stern (rear) of a ship
breastplate: the piece that covers the chest in a suit of armor
brown ball: a brown-colored ball worth four points; used in snooker, a type of billiard game
bugger: a person who secretly installs electronic listening devices
bulb baster: a kitchen utensil that assists with basting, or moistening, meat during cooking
bulge the onion bag: British slang for scoring a goal in soccer (or football, as it's known in Great Britain) [the term "bulge the onion bag" refers to the resemblance between the soccer nets and the net bags in which onions are sold]
bunghole: a hole in a wooden barrel that releases liquid; the hole is plugged with a cork called a bung ["To what base uses we may return, Horatio! Why may not imagination trace the noble dust of Alexander, till he find it stopping a bunghole?" - William Shakespeare, Hamlet]
bunya nut: a variety of nut that grows on the Australian pine tree Araucaria bidwilli
bushel: a dry measure for produce or grain that contains four pecks, or eight gallons, or 32 quarts
bushman: a person (typically a backwoodsman) who dwells in the Australian bush
bushmaster: a large venomous snake found in Central and South America
bushmeat: small animals such as rats and monkeys that are hunted for sustenance in forests and jungles, where larger game animals are not readily available
bushwhack: to ambush or engage in a surprise or guerrilla attack
bustard: any of the large-bodied birds of the family Otididae
butternut: a North American walnut tree, the Juglans cinerea
butt hinge: a hinge partially recessed into a door's edge
butt joint: a joint made by placing two pieces of material end-to-side or end-to-end
butt log: in logging, the largest section of a tree that is sawn off near the tree's stump, or butt
