Auntie Cynthia is dead now! / Sri Lankan lunch
When Eric picked me up this morning, I wished him a happy birthday, for which he thanked me before saying that I shouldn't be so freaked out by the phone ringing. I did a verbal Note To Self saying that I shouldn't turn the phone all the way on, so of course he had to say that I should actually attach it to a loudspeaker at max volume... I DON'T THINK SO! When we passed a sign about curling, he tried convincing me that I should do that; not after cutting my finger open on a skate blade when I was a child! That's nothing, compared to the NHL guy who got his throat slit by a flying skate blade, but STILL! (yes, there are neck guards and thick hockey gloves these days - I'm aware of that much!) He then talked to me in French about how I was crazy (in love), and about how I needed to stop drinking before church - that's what YOU think! "But what about your children Simon and Evie?!" Um, what?! Eric also threw in some STAR WARS quotes, plus the FEAR one before we got to church, spotting a blue Hyundai Accent in front of us (nothing to do with Randal!) and a car advertising ceramic birthday parties (reminded me of Death Piggy's CERAMIC BUTT) on the way.
Refilled my water bottle before going into service, and talked to Nathan about being ready for Grade 5... he gets A's and B's, so it should be fine, except maybe for super-Asian parents! He told me about his brother practicing with amps, and his dad buying a new speaker system with a lot of bass... wow! Said hi to Phil and Emily T., as well - Jeremy had had a long couple of days because of the furniture warehouse Labor Day sale, as he was telling me and Christon. Working an eighteen-hour day, getting a couple hours of sleep, and then going back to work again?! I don't blame him for being incoherent to customers on the phone or in person, since 24 truckloads of stuff (about 12 shipping containers' worth) is quite a lot of product! Eric and I refused to help him out by purchasing some, however!
Victor came in to give money to these two new Honger guys whom I've noticed over the past few weeks (apparently Emily T.'s friends) - wow, I want some of that if you're just going to give money away! (joke) Those two were apparently REALLY IMPATIENT to get Communion, since they totally jumped the line without waiting for Uncle Patrick to direct them. Jeremy and I noticed this at the same time, so exchanged amused looks and shrugs. At the end of service, Phil had one more announcement: Auntie Cynthia (Julie and Elaine's mom) lost her battle with cancer yesterday night. :( [when I saw my sister later because she'd slept in, I told her this sad news in a whisper]
I went to the fellowship hall and was just minding my own business (of COURSE Sonya received an enthusiastic greeting!) when Kevin hailed me; apparently, he missed me at games night on Friday, so I explained what had happened. (Eric having plans with friends, plus my anti-social mood) He wondered when we'd have Committee Meeting - not tomorrow since it's a holiday, but maybe this week? (Dylan's out of town, though) Geoffrey came up to us, so we said hi and talked about the Evergreen Line / Translink / the Ministry of Transportation. When I asked Pastor John later, he himself says he's the last to know. True, but he seems to have a lot of scheduling conflicts lately! I asked Hilary if she planned to drive, since her birthday is also today, and she's 16 now - not yet, which is probably a good thing! My brother would advise her to take transit! Nate said something about the Night Market later tonight (and he'd just been there yesterday for the ONE DOLLAH SKEWAHS!) - even if Eric wasn't going, Nate could still pick me up. (saw Lily, Lee, Hannah, Gavin, Tim, Maxine, Joshua, and Keenan)
Eventually, a plan was made to go for Sri Lankan food at a place called Taste of Ceylon or something. I personally didn't mind at all; Steph came in later to give Eric a high-five with a birthday wish, and talk to Angus and Vanessa about people who were a size zero. I invited Steph to lunch with us, but she had dim sum plans with Caucasian co-workers (!) - then I invited her to the Night Market, but she's in Squamish. She'll be in Seattle for the Seahawks-49ers game soon, and then in Vegas at the end of the month for a wedding. Melia loved this news for some reason, haha. BUSY, BUSY!
Teresa was lurking around in the background looking like she wanted to talk to me, but I wasn't really in the mood... besides, everyone else thought we were waiting for Christon! Under that impression, I asked Karmie about Women's Group - she told me about the new books and studies starting in November, so that sounds good. Little Mattias had his first potato chip today; Karen says that they try to feed him healthy stuff so he doesn't get hooked on chips and such. Whoops! (he also hit his head on the door while playing with the doorstopper - cried a lot!)
I looked at a crying Baby Joanna - Anita joked that discipline worked even at four months old, and Mike K. denied scaring the baby when I asked him about it. Saw Mike T. for the first time in a long time, and HE thought that *I* was the delinquent one! Not really - I've been here when I can, y'know? (barring sickness and leaving early) Said hi to Danielle while Daniel was playing with Connor and Megan; Nate gave Eric his 29 birthday beats, haha. (he'll only be here for two more weeks!) Wesley introduced us to his Calgary friend Michelle, too. After waiting around for a really long time (half an hour?), Eric left a message on Christon's phone: "We hope you haven't gotten kidnapped!"
Wesley had called him at the same time - "he's at the restaurant already, guys!" We left posthaste (after talking to Cindy about the start of teaching in the private school / kids with hearing aids / games night / her new niece Denise / her sister-in-law being in labor from Wednesday to yesterday / Richmond and the hospital), and met up with Christon / Randal / Geoffrey / Jeremy fifteen minutes later. Discussed mutton, roti, haircuts, THE AMAZING RACE, curry, House of Dosas, TMI, black poo, diarrhea, RateMyPoo.com, the diarrhea caused by the cilantro at the Pho place, a "Charis" mispronunciation ("Sherisse?"), extreme spice, Guatemala / Belize / Dianne, Houston, Geoffrey being distantly related to the figure skater Michelle Kwan (cousin's ex-wife's niece), Richie, Johnny, and more stuff. Jeremy was impressed that I finished the plate of food - it was certainly a struggle for the last bit, but I did!
On the way home, Eric said that it would be 12 days till I turned 34 - SHUT UP, MAN! He joked that I should have keg parties; even Corey in Colorado knows about my "penchant for getting drunk and doing keg stands," supposedly. NO!!! HE JUST SHOWED ME HIS 21st BIRTHDAY LIST! I said that I was still one of the oldest in the group (thank goodness Mr. Creep is GONE!) - Raymond and Randal are probably a couple years older than I am. Asked Geoffrey how old he was, just to be sure - 27 is YOUNG, man! After dropping him off, Eric discussed how I seemed to be annoyed with everyone / DARKWING and Ambleside / power plants / having a crazy rest of the day.
