White horehound, woolly butt, yarn bras, and the zone of elongation!

I'll bring you the "W / X / Y / Z" words from this book that Jon and Harmony got me for my birthday. This is from Butt Rot and Bottom Gas: A Glossary of Tragically Misunderstood Words (Eric Groves, Sr.)

water cock: an Australian bird; the male of the species has a fleshy red horn on its head

wet nurse: a woman hired to breast-feed another woman's baby

white ball: an alternate name for the cue ball in the games of pool or snooker

white-breasted nuthatch: a small North American songbird (Sitta carolinensis) with black and blue-gray feathers and a white-feathered face (the white-breasted nuthatch emits a distinctive "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" song as it hangs upside down in trees)

whiteface clown: a circus clown performing in whiteface makeup

white hole: in astrophysics, a celestial body that ejects matter (as opposed to a black hole, which pulls matter inward)

white horehound: a perennial flowering plant in the family Lamiaceae

white sauce: a sauce for vegetables that is made of milk, butter, and seasonings

woman of the bedchamber: in Great Britain, a woman who is a servant to a Queen Regnant or a Queen Consort

woodcock: a bird of the genus Scolopax having brown or black feathers

woolly butt: a fast-growing tree (Eucalyptus longifolia) found primarily in the state of New South Wales (in southeastern Australia), that produces greenish-gray leaves and white blooms, and is covered with a furry bark resembling wool

worry balls: Chinese meditation orbs that are manipulated by hand to induce calmness


X

XO sex determination system: a process used by certain insects to determine the offspring's gender

X-ring: the famed brass graduation ring awarded to graduates in good standing of the St. Francis Xavier University [the X-ring features a large X, and is so highly prized by St. Francis' alumnae that it has become the school's official emblem]

XXX: the number thirty written in Roman numerals


Y

yarn bra: a mesh pouch for holding a ball of yarn while knitting

yellow boy: a British gold coin [an example of a yellow boy is the guinea, the first machine-minted gold coin produced by the British Empire; it was worth one pound sterling or twenty shillings, although that value often increased due to fluctuations in the price of gold]

yellow leg mushroom: a common mushroom that grows in wooded areas and damp places


Z

zaddick: a just and righteous man in the Jewish religion

Zamboni: a mechanized vehicle for smoothing ice at hockey games

zax: a tool used for trimming roof slates

zone of elongation: the area in plant roots where cells grow and enlarge
